I know it's not, but the game gave me one of those "That's a bizarre combination. I wonder how this will turn out..." messages.
Hard to pass up at only 99 cents, but still unsure if it's worth it. I've never been much of a Sims guy, and this game seems mighty similar.
It's actually quite different. Sims was focused on social interactions between people in a world you created. Game Dev Story revolves around making money, like a tycoon style game, and is a lot simpler.
While i can't claim to fully understand how it works yet, this is what i've noticed You get points by levelling up genre and type. This is done by choosing good combinations. What i've noticed is you get more points on hitting lvl 2 and 5 respectively but not everytime. I can't tell you why that is though

Why is Dexter Mcphee so awesome and yet so bad?? Once I had him write a proposal for a game and he gave me a whopping 112 fun. Then. a few games later, he gave me 13 fun for the exact same genre! Is there a reason he's this weird? I make sure none of my people have a "PREV" on them before making a game, and I always use a Dead Bull before a game too, so he was in perfect condition for both.
Do the director and producer jobs do anything for you beyond having backup coders, writers, designer and sound people? Also, does it matter who uses the fun and creativity boosts? For fun, my coder seems as good as any, not sure about creativity.
Game Impressions This game is... awesome and strange at the same time. As such is repetitive and kind of boring - you just make games (and money), some contracts, then make even more games (and money). Rinse and repeat. However there is whole new level of gameplay if you start to think about details - your employers, how to maximize their abilities (and walk-times), or how to get better devs, how to make 6-week contracts possible, how to maximize probability of making perfect game, how to get money for all those expensive licences... ... so all in all this game has potential to be a kind of casual (for those not paying attention to details and having a few minutes to spare, and not expecting unlimited gameplay due to inability of earning serious money at some point) and for die-hard fans of tycoon/microeconomy genre (you have influence over every minor detail of everything here, you can tweak, test and experiment for long hours). As for now its the best example of tycoon game in AppStore indeed.
