Yeah, I'm definitely getting the same dead zones on mine. They aren't particularly severe, and they're visible on all of the available MFi controllers. I wonder if it's a driver problem.

Yes it's not that bad unless you want to play 1st person shooter. All other games play fine for me.Unfortunately I was looking forward to some games like this now,i thought i have the right controller now.But probably nobody has, lol.

Anyway,it's definitely not bad to play shooter, aiming just doesn't feel really smooth and highly enjoyable. But it's fine for now and i hope there will be improvements in the foreseen future.I'm still happy with my purchase of course.Playing the shit out of Oceanhorn (again) right now.Another fantastic console style experience with a controller (well, even without) :)

I think it's the games themselves adding the dead zone. The reason I say that is because both the Mad Catz app and the Game Controller Tester app show almost no dead zone for the sticks. I can imagine the Mad Catz app might be using some custom API for their controller. However Game Controller Tester is just a 3rd party app which is presumably using the same controller API available to all developers, so if it can register slight stick movements from center then other apps could be doing the same. If you haven't already, try downloading Game Controller Tester from the App Store and see what it shows for your controller.

Also, I some games I've tried have less dead zone than others. For instance, Phoenix HD is a bullet hell shooter with controller support, and it has less dead zone than some other games. It's free so you can give it a try also. So maybe we should be complaining to devs rather than the controller makers or Apple.

Very good post. But i tried it now with the game controller tester, showing me the same results. At least 5mm of deadzone arround the center of my Micro Madcatz.

I'm currently in touch with a very responsive developer regarding controller sensitivity options in his game.I'll ask him what he thinks/knows about it.

Hmm, 5 mm sounds pretty large. I didn't try measuring mine, but I can say with certainty that when testing my full size Mad Catz with Game Controller Tester, the dead zones actually seems smaller than on my Xbox 360 controllers, and certainly no larger. That said, I've been bothered by the dead zones on my xbox controllers too in some games. Compared to my RC plane controllers, game controllers seem pretty sloppy. Of course, my RC controllers cost a lot more than a game pad too. Anyway, I guess my point is that I can certainly see being bothered by dead zones, but I also don't expect iOS controllers to be any better than console controllers in that regard.

i played Phoenix for 2 hours now (what a LSD trip, lol) and it's the same there.Although not that bad/noticeable because i play this different then a 1st person shooter.Until i reach at least roundabout half a million points it's enough to move the stick fast/fitful but later a lot more fine movements are necessary. And then i tend to"oversteer"there quickly as well.Similar to shooter.

It's stil not that bad and of course i did not expect to have a better experience than with a 1st party x360 controller as well but i'm also not nitpicking. It IS clearly noticeable (i never noticed it on a 360 controller if the transition was well implemented) and all the small adjustments you need to do arround the center position for accurate aiming doesn't feel very enjoyable.Though it's also possible it's up to the devs to implement it better. On consoles it also depends on the game how well it works/feel.Unfortunately i have currently only one"reference",Dead Effect.Strangers wrath is currently lacking any sensitivity options but the dev will implement it in a later update. Now i wish i could at least try it with the bigger madcatz to see what difference the longer sticks make.I can imagine it would be better.

Anyway, the SteelSeries support contacted me again,i need to tell them that i don 't use their product anymore but it's worth to share the info to others anyway and i have to take back what i wrote about their customer support. At least they are trying instead of just recommending me to replace my unit (hello madcatz):

"It turns out that with one of the releases of iOS 8, compatibility with our Stratus controller took quite a nasty hit. As a result, many people experienced problems with their controllers not working well with their Apple devices.

Have you tried the latest iOS update? It seems iOS 8.2 fixed some issues with the Stratus. We'd recommend you try it. Let us know if this update helped and if you have any more questions, feel free to get back to us."

okay, latest episode in my controller odyssey:the bluetooth button on my Madcatz Micro got stuck and therefore it always tries to pair with my device.Result:F*cking Controller is unusable now.

So much for the build quality.

    Great.Not.

Hey guys, great to see Phoenix is part of your tests :) I'll weigh in to say that we do not apply any extra/artificial dead zone. The idea of the whole MFi implementation is that developers do not have to tinker with this. My guess is that any difference comes from the manufacturer/hardware. We only have a Stratus in the studio so I can't do any in-depth comparison.

Eww. Same thing happened with my Stratus a few months ago, had to mail it into SteelSeries for a fix, took a month to get it back.

Did you order on Amazon? If so, return it, you get two weeks.

Thanks for the info, I was curious about that!

Is Phoenix built in any game engine such as Unity, anything like that? I'm curious if there could be an extra layer of abstraction adding dead zones. I know Apple specifically says dead zone management is handled by iOS and that developers shouldn't touch it, so I'm kinda grasping at straws here, but hey, if there is a chance...

In Phoenix HD I see the same size dead zone as in Game Controller Tester, which is also about the same as I see with my Xbox controllers. So I believe you're not adding any dead zone, and I also know there's nothing inherent in the controller or iOS which makes it so there has to be a big dead zone. So other games must be adding larger dead zones. Maybe there is some middleware layer like Unity that adds dead zones that a lot of games are using, and that's why we see the larger dead zones in a lot of games.

There must be something going on in at least some games. I have a much bigger dead zone in Neon Shadow than in Phoenix HD for example.

The local MediaMarkt here in Spain is dumping the Logitech Powershell for 6,99 EUR. Grabbed one and it's pretty decent actually for those games that don't need analog sticks. Also used it as emergency charger twice already. For this price it's a no brainer. Don't know if you'll find it at any MediaMarkt for that low price but it's worth having a look if you're there for other shopping.

They are planning on including it. It was supposed to be implemented in the last update, but they were having some issues with it and had to pull it. They are still planning on adding it in a future update.

We have built our own engine so I can say for sure that we have nothing happening 'in between'.

Need some help deciding which controller to get. I have a 6 Plus & Air 2 which they are currently jailbroken.

Was planning on just getting a PS3 or PS4 controller and use the tweak Controllers For All. But debating whether I should just get Mad Catz C.T.R.L.i or SteelSeries Stratus XL. Any of you have experience with using both Controllers For All tweak and one of those controllers to see which has the better experience?
