I haven't tried my CTRLi with any FPS games yet, but I have noticed when playing Reckless Racing 3 that it seems a little harder to make fine steering adjustments than with the PS3 controller I was using before. I've been attributing this to the fact that the spring tension in the analog sticks is higher than I'm used to, so I end up pushing harder to overcome it and overshooting. I've only had the controller a couple of days though, so maybe that's not it. I'll try it later with Neon Shadow, the only FPS I own, and see how hard it is to make fine aim adjustments compared to the PS3 controller.
Okay,i still expect MFI controller not en par with the original Playstation or Xbox controller,so what you describe seems reasonable but still ok.But the, reviews read like you can't use the sticks at all with some kind of action games. I start to think about their playskills lately. The Oddworld score was also kind of unreal because a lot of people (here) seems to play this game quite well with Touch controls (and they are highly customizable too)and another reviewer trashed it ("unplayable") just because of the controls and never even tested it with a controller. It's a 10 with a controller.Even with the crappy Stratus
The analog sticks are fine, in my opinion. I stopped trusting anything PocketGamer says about anything a long time ago. The sticks are a bit stiffer than those of an Xbox or PS3 controller, but they are very much useable. The Horipad analog sticks are smoother, with less of a dead zone in the middle. Stratus XL's seem smooth, but they were broken on my test unit, so I can't say one way or the other.
I understand that you've had a very bad experience with Stratus XL, but I've been using mine on the exact same games you've mentioned, and have had no issues with precision.. It may very well be that I have different expectations of a controller, or it may be that you had a broken controller. I don't know what the explanation is, but I just wanted to chime in with my experiences with it for other potential buyers of the Stratus XL here.
I tried my CTRLi with Neon Shadow, and I think the analog sticks work fine for aiming. Certainly it feels no worse than aiming with my Xbox 360 controller as far as accuracy. The only negative I noticed in that game is that the dead zone for the sticks is pretty big. I think that's just a software issue though, maybe just in that game, because if I go into the Mad Catz app, which shows when the sticks are moving, it picks up even slight movements from center. So yeah, I'm not sure I agree with that pocketgamer review, though I suppose I'd have to try the other controllers he says are better side by side to be certain.
I did just that earlier tonight, I found no significant difference. Apple specifically requests that games developers NOT implement any sort of dead zone detection, because Apple handles that themselves. The way I see it, we have two possibilities here: either Neon Shadow's developer (and other developers) added dead zone detection anyways, or Apple's dead zone detection is too aggressive. The fact that apps like the C.T.R.L.i tester and the Game Controller tester app do not experience dead zones the same way that certain games do leads me to think the developers might be at fault, but it wouldn't shock me too much either way...
Does anyone know if the new iOS update causes problems with the mad catz controller, I'm paranoid about updating these days!!
Madkatz ctrli can be updated no matter what happens to ios, one of the several reasons why i have one in the mail.
I received my Ctrli Micro today (no probs with 8.1.2) and it's definitely a great controller.A tad to lightweight for my taste but the build quality is very good. All Sticks,Triggers,Buttons are a joy to use.And i can also confirm that this controller doesn't feel like a"small"controller at all.At least for (my) medium sized hands. Sticks are precise although there is a small but noticeable dead zone (like mehtioned before).I have no other shooter to test then Strangers Wrath and i noticed a (very)few mm arround the center of the sticks where nothing happens. It's not that bad than i feared before.I guess it's something i get used to.It's also possible that it has something to do with the stiffness of the sticks.Usually i prefer stiff sticks but because these are a little shorter,i guess it would be better the other way arround. But like any other sticks they will be less stiff after a while of usage. With my Stratus I never cared about dead zones anyway because the sticks are just to crappy for accurate aiming Sold my Stratus now so the controller exchange cost me just 28 bucks (including a recharger with 4 AAA batteries).Me happy
Nothing bad so far, that I've seen. 8.1.1 fixed the Stratus for most people, which is awesome. Presumably Apple is tweaking Bluetooth or MFi controller connections, but it hasn't resulted in anything negative so far. Awesome, glad to hear you're liking it! Been trying to figure out what the heck is going on with the dead zones, but I'm not making much progress. The controller itself seems to have some, but the MFi driver and/or developer implementation seems to be making it worse. Personally, I'm more of a "rapid-tap" than a "precise control" analog control player, so it doesn't affect me much. The sticks loosen up a little after playing for a few weeks. They were stiffer at first, now they feel about the same as my 360 pad.
Have to say everything about the stiffness screams"quality"if you know what i mean.I always had very bad experience a with 3rd party controller (on consoles)mostly because of lose and wobbly (therefore unprecise) sticks but the springs in here feel quite good and"expensive".I played a couple of hours more with Stranger now and it's definitely the dead zone that bothers me a little, not the stiffness or the size of the sticks.I guess (1st person) shooter are most sensitive to this. Still,a world of difference to the stratus and a universe of difference to touch controls Just not 100% as good as on consoles (with 1st party controller!) I guess it will be better when the sticks are a little more lose and in a game that offers more sensitivity options (they are here in Stranger but the slider full up/down doesn't seem to change that much).Slider all the way down in Stranger is still a little nervous for my taste. Anything else i tried plays great! And i do not only like the size,i love the size.Maybe even more than a bigger controller now
Just got the mad catz ctrli micro. Build quality is fine, but does anyone else frequently hit there left thumb onto the iphone when using the analog thumbstick? Is this likely a problem with full size ctrli? I think its the distance between left thumbstick and iphone...too short. Otherwise, micro ctrli is perfect.
That sounds strange, seems to me like it would be the perfect fit for Mfi controllers :/ I hope Mojang are working on it though
There have been many, many requests for it, but I have no clue if Mojang is listening. It's probably the single most requested game I've seen for controller support. To be honest, I find it basically unplayable right now. It has some of the worst touch controls I've ever seen on iOS. Ahh well, maybe someday...
indeed, yet a developer coded controller support for the Amazon Fire TV version - which works nicely as a portable console for when we're off visting and my son needs his minecraft fix ! Shame as the GFX are sharp and smooth on my Air, much nicer than the very playable Vita version.
CTRLi Get! Finally just got my full size CTRLi. (Was only $50 from the Mad Catz website!) Checked is out with Wayward Souls and my game Astro Duel. So far it's pretty great! D-pad isn't perfect, but everything else feels damn solid. This is the controller I've been waiting for. It feels good. It isn't crazy expensive. Well done Mad Catz.
I sent a mail to the madcatz support two days ago.I asked if they could look into the stick dead zones and gave them easy examples as well as mentioning other people (and reviews) experiencing the same issue. madcatz answer:my unit must be broken and i should contact the seller to replace it.Yeah,right.Sending it back and forth so i have nothing to play with over the christmas holiday while it's clear that it's not a fault on my device only and most likely it will be the same issue on the replacement. Madcatz support seems not one cent better than the SteelSeries support.Good to know.
