Hello, I'm thinking of getting a controller. What is the best one right now? Also, just seen this... Can anyone shed light on it - http://www.nes30.com
Hey, It's tricky right now, there are a bunch of controllers out that are all flawed in one way it or another. For iPad, the SteelSeries Stratus is the only option available. For iPhone, the Moga Ace Power is the only controller with analog sticks, but everything about it is sort of cheap and shoddy. The Logitech Powershell is well built, but it has an awful d-pad, and it's just a bit big to fit in your pocket. The Razer Junglecat will be hitting in a few weeks, and it's excellent, but also lacks analog sticks, and is a bit expensive. There are at least 5-10 controllers hitting in the next few months too, including a few full-size Xbox and PlayStation style controllers, if you decide to wait. Sadly, the nes30 isn't an MFi controller, and doesn't work with those games. It's probably iCade, which is a much more limited number of games from before Apple enabled official support.
Just to be clear, while the Moga is the only iPhone-only controller with analog sticks, the SteelSeries Stratus has analogs and works with iPhones also.
Yo, I just finished and released Astro Duel for iPad. It's a competitive space combat game for 2 to 4 players. It supports up to four MFi controllers. https://itunes.apple.com/app/id548898306 Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel
Correct..Stratus works with iPhone 5/5C/5S. . But I'd wait a few weeks there should be new controllers available that will be compatible with all lightning iOS devices Controllers due for release soon are HORIPAD,MADCATZ CTRLi & MOGA Rebel. All are full size Bluetooth controllers with analog sticks. They should also be in the same price bracket as the stratus or cheaper!
I agree completely. I bought a Stratus and returned it after a few days, because I couldn't get comfortable with how small it was. I'm holding out for one of the full size BT controllers. I've been very tempted to just jailbreak my iPad and buy a PS3 controller because it's taking so long for the approved ones to come out. The problem is there is no guarantee that would continue to work with new iOS versions and devices, so I'd rather get an approved MFi controller.
Whoops, should have been more clear about that, yeah. The Stratus works fine with the iPhone as well as the iPad. Of course, having a wireless controller for a tiny screen is kind of a weird way to play - I tend to prefer controller cases or controllers with clips for the iPhone
Really wish someone would make a controller for my air that is attached to the sides of my tablet, kinda like that razer tablet.
Well there is the Gamevice for the Mini coming soon: I asked about whether or not it'll be coming for the Air, and at this time they aren't sure. Hopefully it will...
^That looks pretty sweet! I'm gonna wait for an actual controller that can be used with iPhone and iPad mini though. I might just get this AND a regular one, who knows.. Getting frustrated with how long it's taking for these better controllers to come out. Went to the apple store the other day to look at what they had (the nearest store is almost 2 hours away from my house) and they only had the Stratus and Moga slider. I was shocked at how tiny the Stratus was. Needless to say, I went home empty handed. Did buy some new Adidas sneakers, so it wasn't a total loss #
Thermaltake is preparing an MFi controller of their own with their upcoming TteSports Contour controller: Its an early build, but it looks pretty good to me!
Just bought a Stratus from Computer Exchange here in the UK for about £35 (so what, $55?) to use with my Air. Seemed cheap enough to bite. Impressions are that it's a well built device, pairs easily, little lag and small enough to chuck in my bag to carry round with me. Only issue is that I have quite large hands and everything is so close together . Works an absolute treat with all my recently acquired Radian games, JoyJoy in particular. Jet Car Stunts 2 was instantly more playable, and I'm looking forward to getting back to KotoR. I fully intend to pick up Terraria, Monster Hunter and Bastion in the very near future (I've held off those up until now as I own/have played them on other platforms).
Thanks for the impressions! I was wondering about the Stratus. Still gonna wait for something better, whenever that happens. Until then, I've got PLENTY of games that work fine with touch controls to keep me occupied. I'd probably buy a Stratus if they dropped the price to 30 or 40 bucks...
I've been having a whole lot of issues with my MOGA controller lately... having to restart it multiple times a day... sometimes I just have to let it sit there for a couple hours before it'll reset again (pushing the reset button just makes the lights flash a couple times every 5 seconds or so until I unplug my phone). Anyone else? Or does anyone know of a way to fix this issue?
Strange, mine actually seems to have gotten better over the past few months, with fewer restarts than before. Maybe try letting the battery drain completely? And I've always found better results from resetting the MOGA without having the iPhone inserted, so try that...
Thank you... I'll try that. It's been a while since I drained the battery completely. =o/ And I'll make sure to take my phone out whenever I wanna try reseting it. Thanks again, kmacleod. =o)
Worth trying a few things, it could just be a hardware fault. These things happen - my Stratus just broke earlier today! I wish you luck. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if anyone is actually running MOGA right now, or if they're out or business, so I hope you don't have to get it serviced...
Hey, does anyone know what's going on with the Razer Junglecat? It's been over 2 months now, but last solid thing I heard was the CEO saying it would launch a month ago. Hope this isn't another Caliber Advantage / Bladepad situation due to the new form factors just around the corner? (btw kmacleod, always appreciate all of your work, check your site daily)
