Requires you to pair PS3 controller to iOS device meaning it will no longer work with PS3 without reusing a PC pairing app. Author says more controllers coming soon. Would love a version of this software for Wiimote/Classic Controller as they are able to temporarily pair meaning you don't lose them for use on your Wii/Wii U console.
I don't need the actual PS3 system for the controller, right? By that I mean charging up the battery. If that's true, this will be much cheaper than paying the Apple tax for a worse quality controller. I didn't want to jailbreak, but this would get me to do it.
You don't. I have a DS3 (that I bought for my Galaxy Note back in the day) and I've never owned a PS3. You can charge the controller with any mini usb (NOT micro usb) cable and if I recall correctly the controller didn't come with one.
Not to worry. A) I'll be updating the list on the first page tomorrow morning B) I'll have a new section of "Best of" which would help new comers like yourself get started with controller-support games. Should also be available tomorrow on the first page.
You can charge the ps3 pad with the supply USB cable you get with it. Just hook it up to your PC/Mac. Although... I've yet to try that myself..
I'm installing it right now - glad I didn't sell my old iPad yet It charges decently like that, and as an added bonus, the Mac can actually use the controller to play pretty much any emulator out there
If there was doubt if it was possible to make other controllers emulate the MFi controls this answered our question and maybe it wil help lower the stupid price of this ios controllers If they looked liked premium controllers i could maybe understand the price but they look like that controllers we buy as a spare for our consoles. And yes i know some like the Moga and logitech are more expensive since they have a battery and audio output but the wireless one costing the same i can't figure it why. Guess i'll go buy one dualshock this week and hope to have fun in my new ipad that i might buy this week. Ps: i guess this means the new Blutrol will be awesome since it will support the MFi supported games and all the other ones also.
100 bucks isn't outrageous for the other controllers. As for the SteelSeries, I'm not sure why they're going with that price. Maybe they think their controller is much better than the others, and there is no reason to go cheaper? If so, that's a mistake - I'd rather have the Moga. The price of the official ones will come down. In my opinion, this jailbreak support is STILL great news, though. It may slightly decrease sales of MFi controllers, but it should lead to a larger increase of developer support. At the very least, it'll make it easier for developers to test their games.
Wouldn't the ps3 joystick have some lag due to having some interface software? I would like to hear back from someone that has both a legit ios 7 joystick and these jailbroken ps3 joysticks to compare the response, and also things like whether all the buttons work, the dual analog works ok, and for no individual setups required for games.
I'm setting it up right now actually; there have been mixed reports on compatibility. The good news is, this is just version 1 - assuming the interface layer doesn't cause too much lag, it should be possible to improve the implementation.
Wow. Not only does it work, but it works really well. This is really good news for MFi game fans. Setting it up is a pain - you have to connect both devices to your computer before you can use the controller - and once it's set up, it seems like you can only use the BTStack version of bluetooth. I'll still be recommending real MFi controllers, but this is a seriously cool hack for those who like jailbreaking.
Looks like the dev is adding dualshock 4 support soon (PS4 controllers) - https://twitter.com/cjori/status/424973174108065792
It works great with the DS3 so far. Seriously, I have a pretty extensive list of games I've tested, and everything I've tested that is compatible with the Extended layout works perfectly with the DS3 so far. The only issue I've found is that there is almost no deadzone in the center of the stick. Even the slightest directional move triggers movement, and that can be a problem, since the controller's joystick can come to a rest slightly off center.
Moving the analogs in a round circular motion for about 15 seconds usually sorts out the slight movements... I noticed that with some shooters on the PS3, try see if that helps.
Tried the ps3 controller and it works really well so far. I'm sure this tweak will improve over time with updates and I bet similar tweaks will start to appear also. I definately won't be buying an overpriced mfi controller now.
It does, definitely. It's not that big of a problem, but it is NOT one that I've experienced using this controller on a PS3 or PC. But yeah, not a deal killer, and the problem doesn't happen in all games
