It’s a two-part puzzle: a visual image of the memory and a telescopic text, that reveals itself with every step. You start with fragmented pieces of the picture and have to move them to restore the original image. In turn, telescopic text reacts to your every step – the closer you are to the solution, the more text unfolds. You are indeed remembering – adding details to the memory and forming a clear picture. A DEEP AND MYSTERIOUS STORY G30 is about memory and consciousness – and what they mean for a human being. There are people around who are losing their ability to remember – some kinds of mental diseases do that to a person. G30 shows how they see the world, how they feel about the past they can’t remember and the reality they can’t recognize. It’s a puzzle game with a story to tell and a great atmosphere. Gameplay is primarily manipulating different parts of a shape until it looks like something that makes sense. In one level, you’re rotating coloured wheels which cycle through a number of possible arrangements of “blobs”, until they all line up in a way that makes a hat, for example. You’re not rotating blindly though, as there is a hint system in place that’s linked to the story. When a control is arranged in the correct position, one or more words from a sentence appear above the shape. As you complete more of each level, more and more of that level’s story is revealed. The story is intriguing, though it leaves a lot to be interpreted by the player. If you prefer not to read between the lines, it will ultimately be an unsatisfying experience. The way that individual levels tell their part of the story is interesting - as you piece together the fragments, the sentence morphs and changes in front of you. On numerous occasions this meant I thought I had a story figured out, only to have it completely flipped to mean the opposite once the whole sentence was revealed. It’s hard to tell whether this is by design or accidental, but I enjoyed the effect nonetheless. An additional story is told by picking out (and tapping) certain words from each level as they become highlighted. This takes a step back from the “in-the-moment” stories of each level and tells a larger story about what’s going on. There is no complexity here - as long as you remember to tap the blinking words as they come up, you won’t miss out. That said, I rather appreciated the slow reveal of the story. It adds context to the levels, each of which is a snapshot of a scene. However, my enjoyment of the game is somewhat tarnished because of the main mechanic - the manipulation of elements in each level. On some of the harder levels, the way controls interact with one another is not always straightforward and leads to a fair amount of trial and error. It’s sporadic enough to not affect the game too much but happened more and more with the added complexity. The aesthetic of G30 is the biggest draw, not the gameplay. The music is calm and subdued, the story is interesting enough, but it won’t appeal to puzzle fanatics hungering for a great challenge, nor to someone who is looking for a complex narrative. The perfect way to play this game is in bed with the lights off, the in-game music on and let yourself be soothed at the end of a day. It’s not for everyone, but there is a lot to love if you come in with the right mindset. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
