That doesn't make any sense. If that were true, then with your site, nobody would buy the apps that have already been featured. They would just wait for them to go free again.

With the voting system, people will check out many more apps to determine which one they want for free and vote for it. If the app they voted for doesn't get chosen for some reason, then the person may decide to buy it anyway. Also, they may decide to buy the app that they didn't vote for.

Any time you consider making your app free (even if you are EA), you run the risk of losing out on some sales. That is just the nature of people. That's why developers need to be smarter about how and when to make their apps free, and how to take best advantage of it.

I think this free for a day only works for paid DLC Apps (add on level packs for additional paid apps) or the app has past it's sell by date and is used to advertise the next product.

In those case it's worth using these services. For a new product that's been on sale for a month it is suicide to the sales.

For developers struggling with sales and using this as a last ditch attempt to generate sales, it may pay to do this or not pay. Like everything on the Appstore it's a gamble.

  4. Yes, those are two cases that will work, but there are others as well. We will have a section on the site soon that describes some additional options for developers to consider.

We do not recommend making your game or app free for a day if it is a straight paid app under normal circumstances. Having said that, there will be other promotional options available on the site for straight paid apps in the near future.

Exactly, but with freeAppCalendar, the "gamble" won't cost you anything up front.

The site will have some paid promotional options that developers can optionally take advantage of, but the main app calendar is free for developers to participate in.

Looks really good, but doesn't have any buzz around. Traffic rank is zero... :(

Hope, this will help not only Appy's games, but also Mezopuzzle and other games you have on your site.

GraalOnline Classic is now featured on FreeAppaDay.com
We have worked hard on making a special tutorial and giving 2500 Gralats away for free to everyone (which is quite a lot of money in Graal and will also be available as in-app purchase later), the download numbers are already increasing :D

To this freeappaday hater, http://goldenboat.wordpress.com/2010/02/04/everybody-loves-free-pizza/. If you won't listen to reason, perhaps you'll listen to the dev of one of your favorite game.
IF you think that was a lucky fluke, the dev succeeded again with facefighter. :D http://goldenboat.wordpress.com/2010/02/24/facefighter-off-the-ropes/

ok, another success story for nonbelievers - our story ;)

Tiki Totems got roughly half a million free downloads during the last week - not the best of FAAD but certainly something we'd never achieve without it. At some point we broke into top 10 Free Apps in US, we were also most downloaded App of the whole Italian AppStore

It slowly went down, we're at 40k downloads a day and losing it quite fast, but...

After a long long review period of a week, Apple has finally approved our latest update that brings In-App purchases. Which of course got us a huge backlash in the review department ("how can you add paid levels to a game I got for free!") from various kind of... people we should not call obvious names. However - quite a lot of people decided that it's worth it

And basically in one day Tiki Totems brought us significantly more money than during it's 3-4 moths as a paid App on the store. Mind you - we were featured on iTunes at beginning. The numbers were just north of 4k downloads of the extra levels. So basically from a game that was earning 20-40 dollars a day, we have a game that brought over 3k $ in a single day. We knos that it's not gonna last too long, as only some rather small percentage of people are going to buy those levels (currently some 3% od those that updated). But still - if that's not a success than what is ?

After what we saw, we are already actively thinking about our whole business model ;) And obviously FAAD is a big part of it :)

Thank you for sharing Mike. It's a struggle to find a working model so I'm glad to hear that this worked successfully. :)

FAAD Awards and 2010 Game Developers Conference (GDC)

We will be announcing the FAAD Awards Nominee this coming Monday! The winners will be declared at the 2010 Game Developers Conference (GDC) by Stacy our smart and incredibly gorgeous VP of Marketing and it will also be broacasted live at www.FreeAppADay.com. We are also working to get a booth there, not sure if we will be able to get one since it's rather late but we will see! If we do please come say hello! There will be multiple Gold, Silver and Bronze awards ( based on a combination of votes from the FAAD community and actual downloads count) but there will only be one Platinum Award for the top downloaded app of January and February!
