My theories: That weird creature in the pictures is an ominous presence that follows you throughout the game. You will see bits and pieces of it in texts and pictures throughout the game world, and it will sometimes actually appear in order to chase you and add some tension in scenes that would otherwise be very calm. Then near the end of the game, you find out the creature is actually a reflection of your dark side, and the whole game experience is a reflection of your subconscious. The final boss will then be the -real- creature, and then the game ends. Methinks it's an analogy for the developers. The main character is the developers, navigating through the game-creating universe, while they're constantly being tested for their patience by naysayers and hateful words. In the back of the developers' minds, they know that there is a chance the game will fail, and that creature is supposed to represent the omnipresent presence of a present from the present that people can and will resent your present to them in the present. Anyways. Boom! Figured it out. Go me.
Actually, let me shorten my theory: That creature is the omnipresent threat throughout the game that you can't kill and can never catch. At the reveal (whether at the end of the game, or leading into the final boss fight), they take off the mask and it is actually YOU.
Hey, spoilers, buddy! But yes, essentially. It feels like they are taking more than a couple cues from Silent Hill for this endeavor. Truthfully I was talking more about Spoiler Silent Hill: Downpour, and the big black gas-masked dude. In one of the endings, at least, something deals with that that relates to what I suggested above. Speaking of good horror games, have you played Silent Hill: Downpour?

Not exactly this but some of your points are valid. All I can say it's that it's more but more than just a reflection of the character subconscious. Unfortunately I can't tell you but it's way beyond your imagination (though your points are really valid). It is safe to say we don't spawn countless of clones (every character and enemy is really unique and tied up to some specific places in which you'll have to figure it out how to survive/escape or combat those creatures)? In case you missed it, enemies are like boss battles and boss battles are like... It's a secret.
By the way, we are still integrating those darn cut-scenes. Jeebuss this is probably the heaviest thing we've ever done in FM. Takes gazillions times... Hopefully I'll have something to show soon (don't ask when but I promise it would be soon).
