If Apple had this option I would be the first one to use it. ^^
Though, it probably worth commenting this with them, who knows.

But seriously, this game is taking forever to come out. About how much longer until we can buy this game in the App Store. (Is there a number of weeks? Or days? You can tell us.)

Proud of being new? Mhm odd thing to say.

Whatever I'm not attacking you I was just making fun of the fact that you didn't know that we're not supposed to ask for release dates or estimates, cause we had to deal with a couple trolls previously because of that, just letting you know buddy, the game will come out when it comes out :)

That said, Welcome bruv! :) We're all eager to play this beast.

Oww, sorry for asking about the release date of the game. I will not ask about it again.

There was a rekease date given by the dev of may 2013. Which falls in line for my vacation to California in the end of may. This would be the perfect game for my 6 hour flight from NY. This is deff my most anticipated release of the year. Also space miner 2 which I hear is in development.

Hmm. I'm surprised apple doesnot allow this. Maybe allow the dev to give free bonus content to those that preorder.

Have you tried? Technically you could sell a "vitual preorder box".

Say the game will be $9.99 you could create an app called "Forgotten Memories Preorder" for $7.99

Put your bonus content in it, some video, maybe even a demo level. Then when the game is ready, update the app with the full game, change price and name.

The preorder app could even offer the option to get certain achievements that unlock extra content in the final version.

We thought about doing this for our game as sort of our own crowdfunding.

About preorder I was referring to developers Paypal account, we pay them money now and when the game comes out, they send us gift code for it and bundle in some extra stuff for us early investors, you know, usual preorder stuff.
But your post did intrigue me, I would most certainly like to be able to preorder apps and that looks like a viable option.A little worried what Apple will make out of it, approving selling of unfinished product at full price and there is also risk of people buying it accidentally ( most people don't read description, they just look at pictures as they are still in kindergarten ) and all reviews being about "when will the game be released" , "hurry up" or "you tricked me with buying half -product".There is also a risk of someone abandoning development and taking all the money from preorders, but that is rare.I don't think Apple wants to be bothered with that risk though, refunding a big crowd of people isn't that fun in their world.
What you, developers, should do is to gather around table and discuss a lot about possible ways how to actually make preorders a reality on iOS, quoted post has some excellent ideas for starters.

I'm not sure that would work. Aren't developers limited to 50 codes per app?

I think you can have some deal with apple as EA have issued thousands, although its always different rules for them

A pre order system would be ridiculous, there is enough scammers as it is on the app store. the app store reviewers carnt even tell that HALO 4 is a scam.

if a developer really need pre orders then a kick-starter approach could be used

There can definitely be some kind of deal with Apple and developers of many Kickstarter games that mass of people has preordered, it would be just silly that they could only send 50 keys for game per day:p

Preordering isn't a new idea. It have been around on consoles since ages and I think Apple is aware of. If this solution haven't yet been implemented it's because they fear some of those problems you guys already described.
But still we are discussing this with them right now. :)

I don't like the idea with pre orders because with delays, you never know if this game will be released in time. I'll just buy it when it comes out.

I don't like the idea either. FM is almost finished, so I don't see any urgent need to do this. However all this feedback gave me some pre-launch and post-launch promotional ideas. :)
    Warm regards,
