a respectable score, considering I play only constantly always I can't imagine it getting harder to avoid that ****ing ghost it sends me into a hell panic attack, especially in the higher levels Also just realized this is two-player for some reason; i will force one of my friends to play tonight at the pub quiz obligatory complaint about updates
Great little game this. Love the look of it and also the sounds... Awesome! Plays lovely! Anyone else had one of the bugs lay a clear box over the last flower, in a place where you can't shoot it to clear it?
Fantastic game. I play it everyday ! I would love to have some sort of achievement. Any idea if it will be implemented?
Thanks arr4ws! Glad you like it I might put some achievements in, yes.. ~ For anyone finding the controls a bit imprecise, I made this video showing how I play it. From what I've seen, some people are controlling it with large swipes, and raising their finger before swiping again - the way you would usually scroll through a web site or navigate the iOS GUI.. This isn't necessary, and does make playing FMN a bit harder / less accurate. I keep my finger touching the screen most of the time, and do quite small movements, *sort of* as if i'm touching an invisible mini-joystick. Hopefully this video gives some idea of what I mean...
I'll have to try that next time I pick it up. It really is a fantastic game. One of those "it's so clear now, why didn't I think of that" ideas. I hope it's getting some much-deserved recognition.
I will try that control method next time I play. Thanks for posting the video. I was use to swiping and lifting up from playing Ms. Pac-Man. In that game I didn't find it worked well if I left my finger on the screen. Swiping and lifting up worked better, so I brought that to this game.
Hi guys, I hate to ask, but I searched for this in the thread to no avail. Does the game have an actual ending (i.e. after X levels), or is it only a high-score-driven affair? Regards, Paulo Tavares
FYI, FMN has received a small review on Hodapp's page in the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly. Congrats. Hopefully the added exposure does a good bit to increase sales.
I missed this when it came out, but caught the thread this time. It looked like a cool retro-styled Pac-Man-With-a-Difference so I had to give it a shot. I like it. A lot. It's like specific elements of Super Pac-Man (collection, variety of collectibles; mazes), Targ (maze shooting), Mr. Do! (collectibles valuate when collected contiguously; shooting), Boulder Dash (collectibles; enemies explode into collectibles; variety of enemies), and possibly a few other classic 80s games were brought together into a single game with unique elements not seen elsewhere. It's got the standard collection mechanic but coupled with a wide variety of enemies to shoot and/or avoid that each have their own characteristics and effects on gameplay. Add to that the fact that you're constantly shooting, your bullets wrap around the screen, and you can be hurt by your own bullets (unless the key is protecting your back), enemies explode into more collectibles, collectibles increase in value the more you collect contiguously, the randomly generated levels and destructible walls and you've got a pretty fantastic muncher that offers loads of challenge, infinite variety, and big replayability. The retro graphics and chip sounds also appeal to retro nuts like myself, but the gameplay can appeal to anyone. It may just be me, as well, but the graphics really feel like a few games I've played on the 8-bit Atari -- the colours and step shading in particular -- so, being an Atari 8-bitter from back in the day, this just added to the appeal. Totally worth $2.
I think I've run into a problem with the game. Take a look at the attached picture below. See my character in the top right corner? There are two flowers encased in ... well, whatever that stuff is that enemy encases them in. You can destroy the casing if you can shoot it, but the problem is, with the way that level was designed, I can't aim at the casing because I can't stop there. The casing acts like a wall so you can't turn into it to fire at it. So I couldn't complete this level, as there was no way to shoot the casing off to get at those last two flowers. If there was a bomb enemy that I could get to explode right at that corner I'd be good (I think) but none were forthcoming on that level. This should be addressed by allowing you to turn into one of those casings as if it were clear of obstructions, but not be able to move into the space it occupies until you've shot it and cleared it away. On another note, that's another game an element was taken from: Berzerk (indestructible enemy appears on screen and chases you if you take too long). Except Evil Otto was taken and changed into some kind of giant Kirby creature.
If you grind and build up power you can turn and smash through it. You should be grinding almost all of the time in order to play better and rack up higher scores. Practice makes perfect!
I didn't know you could power up enough that you can just smash through things. I do try and grind levels as much as I can to get maximum scores though, but I guess I haven't done it enough on a given level to reach that kind of power level. Or survived long enough. Still, while that is a solution it's a bit obscure, and is also one I don't think was intended with this sort of situation in mind. I think this is just one of those (nearly) unwinnable states that a randomly-generated game can create that the developer didn't anticipate. This was level two, by the way, so it isn't necessarily something that happens far into the game (though I'm sure it can)
I don't understand - grinding on its own doesn't increase scores, it's the fact that you smash through multiple enemies that allows better scores. Which means you have to reach a certain power level - the same level that you need to punch through those walls. And he did anticipate it: http://nyarlulabs.blogspot.com/2011/04/goop.html
No, no. When you're moving along a corridor, swipe in the direction of a wall and you'll start shooting sparks. If you do it long enough, you'll start making a noise and glowing red. At that point, you can run straight through enemies and the goopy walls. If you grind too long, you'll explode. It takes a while to get used to, but becomes second nature after a while.
Ah, now I understand! I gave it a try and it works! Takes some time to build up enough energy, but it seems pretty easy to get the hang of. Thanks for the tip! That should make things easier.
