For people with consoles or handhelds, do you play IOS less/value it less?

I find that the solution lies in the principle "less is more." I just recently sold over 50 of my console games, leaving me with about 40 or so left that I really treasure. I only own 2 or 3 games that are exclusive to PC; otherwise all my Steam games are duplicates of certain console games, like Dark Souls. I always laugh when I hear people talk about their Steam backlog. 800 games? Try 14. That's what I have. On iOS, I did a similar purge. If I haven't played the game in a year, it goes, no questions. I think that as gamers we can fall into the trap of the hoarder mentality. I know some people that own games just for the sake of owning the game. They don't even play it. There is a certain fear that becomes associated with NOT owning a particular game. If you can get that fear out of you (trust me, you don't have to play your entire backlog) then you will find happiness in just a few games. The thing that really made me look at this was that I owned over one hundred games across several consoles and I was only playing a small handful of them. There will always be games to play. You don't need to play them all to live a happy and fulfilling life. Just stick to the ones that are the most relevant to you. That's my advice!

As a side note, I'm actually looking forward to completing my games collection, so that I never have to buy anymore games. Most games that come out are just copying older titles, so I don't feel the need to keep up with most modern games. The last modern games I plan on buying are Wild, The Last Guardian, and Dark Souls 3. I only need 5 more SNES games to complete that collection, then I'm done! No more buying games endlessly and I can actually enjoy what I have, rather than having a backlog! I look forward to that day.

I find more value in console than iOS because the experiences are richer. I find that I only play iOS right before bed or if I'm on the toilet or in line waiting for something. Most of the gameplay experiences on that platform lack the depth of even old NES games for me. Like I said above, I really can't wait to stop buying games. I haven't bought a new iOS game in about a year. It feels really good to enjoy what I have, rather than trying to stay on top of the endless amount of new content that becomes available!

There is only so much time for you left on this earth! I don't want to use that trying to catch up on an endless list of games in some dark backlog. I don't want to waste time on iOS games that offer little depth. They are fun for a while, but I can only handle so much of Blosics or Bejeweled or Spell Tower and such. I would rather use my time on meaningful experiences to me. Gaming is fun, but spending time with my wife is more fun. Teaching martial arts is more fun. Reading is more fun. There's just more to life than gamers realize. Okay, that was a pretty good rant! I hope someone got something out of it!

Wow, I never really knew that this kind of "mobile vs. console gaming" war is going on. I always saw them as 2 different gaming options that you use; one when you're home, and the other when you're outside. I can't see why anyone would argue about that, seems pretty logical to me that when you have time and you're at home you'll use a console and when you're outside and have about 10 minutes you'll use your mobile device.

For myself, definitely yes. After I got my ps4 a year ago, I hardly ever play any iOS games these days. Console games are just so much more immersive and more fun for me these days. The bigger screen, better graphics, and using a physical controller are really some of the main things that make me prefer my ps4.

I'm not sure what you're talking about, never seen anyone who purchased games just to have them.

Also, your tip doesn't apply to everyone. Maybe you're able to play the same games over and over because you like them, but a lot of people can't do that. I know I can't play the same game for a very long time (unless it's a very special game like LoL which doesn't feel the same every single time you play), and I'm sure more than half of the gaming community is the same too.I agree that buying every single new triple A game that comes out isn't a good idea since playing many games at the same time makes the experience in each one of them worse, but buying a new game every few months isn't bad.

In fact, I think what you're doing is unfair. You're saying that after you complete your gaming collection you won't buy new games because they repeat each other, but that's just a slap in the face to developers who actually manage to be creative. I don't feel the same at all when I play Witcher 3 and Fallout 4. I don't feel the same at all when I play WoW and Tera. I don't even feel the same when I play Battlefield and CoD. Even if the games share the same genres, most of the time they feel different.

And the thing I found different about your post is that you like the dark souls franchise. I absolutely adore Bloodborne and it may be my favorite game of all time, but playing Dark souls 1 & 2 feel very similar to it and to each other. Don't get me wrong, I love the Dark souls games too, but didn't you say that games feel too similar these days so it's not worth buying them? I mean Dark souls 1 feels to me very close to dark souls 1. And you're saying you're about to get Dark souls 3, which will be similar to the other dark souls games too... I just don't get your point then.

It's lifestyle related. Depending on such, and time.. You tend to lean one way or the other.

However it's good to have it all!

I have a PS3 which has been gathering dust since my second load of paternity leave. There's also a guitar or two with rusting strings in another room. Sigh... Never did get to finish Dragon Age or Arkham City...

However, my iPhone has comfortably filled my gaming void over the past three or four years. The range and quality of titles has soared exponentially since the days of Rolando and even Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja. There's no need to settle for shallow timewasters or subsidise hateful FTP titles in this era.

Admittedly, my gaming tastes run towards RPGs and adventure/puzzle games, where iOS is so well catered for. Square Enix and Capcom have done some amazing ports (TWEWY might just be my favourite game, period, while Ghost Trick and MHFU are wonderful) and there are also superb indie games such as The Room series or the Inkle adventures. For action, the likes of Goblin Sword, Hopiko and Downwell scratch an itch.

Admittedly, if I wanted to play an FPS or Fallout 4, I'd have to fire up a console - but I get so much out of iOS, I have to say I value it more. It's portable, it's fast, and I can play when I have a spare five minutes or a spare hour. Just as long as you don't update whenever the new operating system is released - until you know what games are going to break - it's perfect.

I bet The Witcher 3 is good though...

First uh wow a lot of people have thoughts on this. It's nice though that it's not 'well mobile sucks, no console sucks NO MOBILE SUCKS NO YOUR STUPID' but instead people just voicing their thoughts on why they prefer one or use one over the other. Personally I think the reason I feel this way is kinda what you said: lifestyle. Being younger I have more time and am at home a lot. When I'm older that may change and I may go towards mobile more

I don't really think this is an explanation of the value aspect of the question. I'm in my 30's, with a family, career, new house that I am remodeling by myself. I have hardly anytime to game. With iOS, I'll take some time here and there, but I most look forward to getting time to play on a console. When I do have some downtime where I'm not able to do anything but pull out my phone, I usually open Feedly and catch up on news and other happenings. A couple years ago, I would probably have started a game.

This. So much this. It's a great time for games. Hardware is cheap, software is plentiful, everything runs well. I have all the consoles but not enough time for them, so iOS gets the most attention. I'm never bored, ever.

I play on my phone all the time.. Not bother buying ps4 or anything like that because i won't have time to sit and play it.. With mobile, i can play when I'm on a break at work~ it's a little sad that mobile found it's identity as a sea of F2P, but there are still good games on mobile, and emulating really kicks it up a notch..

Consoles are great too, but it depends on one's lifestyle..

I have a bunch of Xbox 360 and Xbox One games, as well as a backlog of PC games, but when it comes down to it, I play 99% of my games on iOS. The fact of the matter is that I'm just too busy for the others. I can start playing a game on my iPhone immediately, or I can start up the home theater, watch five minutes of startup and splash screens, including every production company that even thought about the game, and finally be ready to play right in time to have to do something else.

I never really took iOS gaming serious until this month. I've had a phone since the 3GS and had many games over the years. I never really felt it the games were that fulfilling. Just something to pass the time while pooping or in the car. But this month I bought a mfi controller and have been playing oceanhorn and Star Wars Knights of the old republic. And I must say its been very addicting. They certainly give the feel of playing a real game. And sometimes find myself passing up playing ps4 to get a good night if iOS gaming in.

This is just one of those human things like some ppl like android and some like apple and some just plain dont care about this and yeah i see ur point it was the main goal when handhelds were invented to be used outside but in the last couple of years ppl just found it easier to just keep playing on what they liked the most console players on ps and xbox and pc which is pretty much fighting against all sides since games look better on pc and then comes the spawn os satan which is mobile gaming a lot of ppl say they dont like it but as discused before big spenders on console and pc are the whales of ios android as well i guess ty for keeping games alive all over

Being married and working I just don't have hours a day to spend in a dif room gaming. I do my gaming on the couch, in bed, at work if it's low impact. Iv had ps4 and a 3ds and sold them both to go back to iOS.

Free to play / freemium / pay to win largely killed iOS gaming for me. I still pop up and support the premium stuff when I see it, but I've reverted to PC and consoles for much of my entertainment.

However data caps are even putting the hurt on that. I really prefer buying a release on cd/dvd (ala Witcher 3).

I haven't had a console or PC in about five years. I got into Android then bought an IPad Air last year. I've found some really great games but still missed the more console type experience. I'm thinking of getting a PS4 this year if money permits. But I usually play games while watching tv with my wife so tying up the tv playing a long stretch of Fallout 4 or whatever just isn't as feasible as it once was when I was single. I once played Rainbow Six Vegas on XBOX 360 online for 14 hrs straight lol.
A few weeks ago I bought a PlayStation Vita and I have to admit that since then I haven't played anything on the iPad. Plus if I do get a PS4 I can use remote play to play some games on the Vita. It just feels closer to playing a great console game. Borderlands 2 for instance...when I started playing it on the Vita I instantly thought "Now this is what I've been missing".
There are still several games I'm looking forward to on iOS this coming year though, like Crashlands, so I'm glad I have them both but at this moment and for the foreseeable future I'm digging the Vita way more.

Since I own a Vita, an iPad mini 2nd gen, a 'decent' PC (can play games from 2012 or older :v) and a PS4 I can say that my iPad has become more a music and video player for me but since I don't always have time to sit and play something like MGS or Deus Ex I say that the iPad does the better job with games for shorter game sessions, more 'experimental' games (like DEVICE 6) or strategy games (like XCOM) but isn't that great for FPSs (with some exceptions) or games that demand a lot of precision or patience (at least for me), but I guess every platform has its flaws and strong points.

It's a slap in the face to developers to not buy anymore games? People need to get off this "developers work hard, so they automatically deserve money" thing. Just because someone makes a game doesn't mean they are deserving of my hard earned cash. Is it unfair to developers that my grandma doesn't buy games at all? No! So, stop being so silly! And to answer your first point, they are called collectors. People just collect things and then don't do anything with them except let them appreciate in value. Just a heads up for you!
