Just found this app today. Looks awesome, but I don't have an iPhone. From the reviews I've seen it's almost 100% accurate. App info is currently processing and/or the app is not yet fully available for sale on the US App Store.
Weird... I'm pretty sure it'd be easy to fool if you tried, but still. Barring a team of people waiting for pictures to upload and naming every one manually, I'm not sure how this would really work. Maybe pixel matching vs Google image results then guessing via common filenames?
I added a video review from appvee. He says he has no idea how it works, but it does identify pop tarts, grapes, a bowl of ham, and quite a few other things.
I'm a bit skeptical as well. Image recognition technology has never been that great and when you consider how many foods are hard to identify even for a human, I find it hard to believe that it could really have 90% accuracy unless the user is going out of their way to photograph easy things. I think branded items like Coke or Pop Tarts (Google Goggles can already do this) would be much easier than a generic bowl of soup. Hmm, for $3 it might be worth it for the short-lived entertainment.
I heard of this app. Looks interesting for those calorie counters. The image recognition technology should be getting better by now, right? Not sure about the entertainment value for the money (as compared to other apps) but for those crazies who count calories and don't like to think or add, might be useful.
I'm fairly sure there's a guy in the basement somewhere typing in the food names after receiving the picture. But in all seriousness, that does look quite cool. Not much use with an iPod touch though as I won't constantly have internet access. Could be useful if you're in some foreign country and don't know what they just served you.
