i coming up to a troubling problem im sure a lot of you other peeps are having. im runing out of room on my iphone. even after 8 pages, im almost all full...

what we need is a folder app.. so that we can store games in folders>subfolders>subsubfolders...

is there anything like that now??

or is 3.0 taking care of that?

No, there is no solution for non-jailbreak devices. 3.0 will bring 11 pages, but no folders. :( I think the fact that you are very restricted in this regard is the biggest issue with the current iPhone, but obviously we are not the majority. Others manage to delete constantly their purchases although this means loss of all save games and highscores.

I honestly think that the reason they don't have folders is because too many apps make the Touch unstable (I try to delete as much as I can, right now I have about 100 apps). I do have a backup app that can backup one or all games, so I can delete and readd later and then load my game save into it (or load my gave saves into all games at the same time).

Since it can be done for JB devices and not for non-JB devices, I'd say Apple knows about it but knows the technical limitations of the iDevices. I think they did some system modifications to make it run better with 11 pages.

So I wholly believe the decision to limit the # of apps is because the iDevices can't handle an unlimited amount.

I don't see any logical reason why the device would be unstable just because there are many files on it. Installed apps does not equal running apps!

And what is this backup app you are talking about?

Backup app is just for JB phones.

If you have 1000 apps, that's 1000 apps that it has to remember where they are, the name, icon, etc. Different 100 vs 1000. Lots of apps makes it crash a lot.

No, that doesn't make sense. We are talking about a Mac OS X system. Even Symbian UIQ was able to handle hundreds of files/installed programs without stability problems.

Maybe there's a limited space for the dashboard icon cache? Old windows systems had such a problem, a hardcoded limit for the number of icons that could be shown on the desktop at the same time, too many icons and the icons went black.

A folder app would not need to be graphically intensive: an app that would give a text list of app names, it could be like one app for listing the games, one for musical instruments, one for dictionaries and so on...

Actually, I would be happy to have just an archiving app: keep all the app files in the device, and select which are shown on the dashboard. I honestly think the apps I have bought should be available on my phone at all times, there are many useful apps I only use occasionally: for example, if I am on the countryside and happen to need a specific GPS app, I can't even redownload it from appstore due to limited or missing network connection.

The appstore popularity has clearly taken Apple by surprise, I'm quite sure they would've implemented the dashboard differently (say, like music folders) if they had guessed people were going to run out of slots. The lame reaction of raising the 9 page limit to 11 just shows how they have realized their mistake but cannot do much to fix it. The current system is bad for business, I'm not buying many apps anymore due to lack of space.

well if you jailbreak, there is a free program called categories which does exactly what you want

you can make folders and add apps to them

then get quick gold - one press on the home button and you can search for anything - no matter how hidden in sub folders it is

    this is a perfect combination
    - although i beleive apple is basically adding quick gold(well there version) in the next v3 update
