I'm not a fan of the Flash plugin. It's resource heavy, and it often causes my Firefox to lag. I look forward to the widespread use of HTML5. It'll give us the ability to play video and audio without the need for external plugins. Everything will run much smoother, and faster. Woo!

Are you as excited about HTML5?

Many sites are already switching over.

HTML5 will be the way we stream things like "flash" on the Ipod Touch and Iphone. ;)

Unfortunately, most people don't know what HTML5 is or what it is capable of. I think if more people were aware of HTML5, you wouldn't see this massive backlash of people who are like "WTF STEVE WHERE IS FLASH" and instead they'd be outraged that their favorite websites aren't taking advantage of these amazing new features that nearly all modern browsers have supported for quite some time and instead choose to leverage a resource hogging browser plugin.

If flash lags then you need to upgrade your PC because I've never had any slow downs with it lol. Also it isn't just about video but flash games. Flash support wont be dropped any time soon, it is a standard for interactive websites.

If Apple want internet browsing to become meaningful on the Ipad and Iphone then they need to support flash in an upcoming update. Otherwise people like my friends will continue to buy HTC and I've sent my Iphone in because it didn't support flash and swapping it for a HTC HD2. I wanted to browse the internet but most of the sites I visited wouldn't work without it.

Well that and things like the phone is so locked you can't even customize the text alert sounds.

We get it, you don't like the iPhone. stfu and move to a different forum.

I honestly didn't even know what HTML5 'til a while ago. Flash is still the standard, sadly.

Yeh sadly for you because you bought crap hardware, you aren't satisfied with it not being supported. So complain to Apple and don't buy anymore of their lackluster products, don't start hating on flash for Apple being completed wankers.

I don't think most people realize how much a flash plugin would degrade the performance of the iPhone / iPod. The memory leaks alone would force a lot of reboots. Mobile devices are better off with something that is cleaner and more integrated like HTML5.

Have you ever looked at Flash's memory and CPU usage? It's a hog.

I'd never give up my iPod for an HTC. HTC doesn't even have Zen Bound or Grand Theft Auto.

What kind of sites are you trying to visit? If I wanted to go to a Flash heavy graphics site, I'd just use my desktop so that I could enjoy it on my 19'' flatscreen.

I believe he meant "sadly" as in HTML5 would be a better source, not necessarily directed towards the iPhone's/iPad's lack of the plug-in support.

Related to your defense of Flash content & games: I would much rather play a game like Real Racing, GTA, Red Conquest!, etc. than a Flash game like Whack Your Boss that I didn't have to pay for any day. The power and diversity of the App Store trumps whatever Flash can offer me any day. How's that for a rebuttal?

I am all for HTML5. Current browsers and especially mobile webkit browsers have support for it. YouTube is going in that direction. Many will start to move to HTML5 as a standard. It is just going to take some time.

A friend of mine sold his iPhone for the HD2. Once you get past the Sense UI and the big screen he had problems with the WinMo environment, OS lag and random crashes. Two weeks later he turned it in and bought another iPhone. Hope it works out for you, though...

Ha! I have a friend too who went through the whole "Man screw the iPhone I'm getting a Droid!" thing. He used it for a week or two, and is now back to his iPhone after a few days of trying to get his number ported back to AT&T and contract reactivated.

Well to be fair it is starting to get a little hard to stay loyal to the iPhone. When the iPhone first came out and I tested it I was hooked. Now when I see people I know test the waters (away from the iPhone) and then come back I quietly tell myself to stay the course. I was a heavy, HEAVY blackberry user from 2004 to late 2007. Once I got the iPhone I haven't used another device.

I've been using smartphones since 2006 and the iphone is the only one I really liked. Every phone of used before felt slow and clunky after extended use and Apple is the only one that's nailed the user experience that makes it easy to grasp in a matter of seconds.

I'm looking forward to HTML5, but I don't see why everyone's suddenly hating on Flash (sticking up for Steve?) because it's served us well for a long time. It filled a gap in the internet and for most of us it was resource friendly and didn't lag our computers down...

I've always had problems with Flash. In general, I'm not a big fan of plugins. For Internet use, I prefer clean integration, and open formats, over sloppy add-ons that depend on expensive SDKs.

I'm with you on that, Flash is pretty much the only plugin of that sort I have installed. I guess I've been using it for so long it no longer feels like a plugin, it just feels standard due to it's immense popularity. Anything else I try to avoid.

I'm probably one of the few nerds who does this, but I sometimes check my system monitor when I'm on certain sites. Flash is a very hungry plugin. Most people don't care about how heavy programs are now in days since computers are so fast, but even with 3gigs of ram, and a dual core processor, I would still prefer to keep my resources available so that I can work on other things. Like right now, I have about 4 programs open.

    I don't hate Flash. I just prefer html5.

Speaking as a web designer, HTML 5 is the way to go. There was a time that Flash allowed designers to do things that were difficult, but this time has passed. Everything web designers think they need Flash for can actually be done in HTML. Animations, audio video playback, interactivity; it all works better when it is actually being handled natively. Especially video - Flash may be the current standard for video, but actually using the plugin to decode video is highly resource intensive, and the resulting video is usually uglier and riddled with lag.

I use clicktoflash on my Mac to disable Flash except when I actually choose to load it, and I have found that I rarely ever do load it. And the few times that I do, it is because web site creators have locked audio or video information inside of a Flash container. The right answer isn't for Apple to work around the poor design of these developers; the right answer is for these developers to build their pages correctly.

The only benefit to Flash is the fact that some games are designed in it. Well, now that Adobe is allowing developers to port Flash games to native iPhone code, this is a non-issue.
