I love the solution the developers have invented for navigating the spaceship. No annoying 4-point-stick, but an innovative way of navigating with two thumbs. Great! Flare Elite offers a great navigation-solution, I think others might steal their idea in the future and also use it in games that require quick navigation. Further, I like the concept of navigation & shooting, while you have to take a rest to collect power particles. Therefore, it is not possible to rush around the screen only attacking, you also have to take some strategic rests to collect power again. This gives the game a nice dynamic and some strategic thinking is needed, while the game is still all about action. In addition, I like it that the game is not too simple. After a few levels, when the large structures appear, I had to play the levels several times before I could complete them. Nice. It's really worth to check this game if you like innovative navigation and challenging gameplay. Get them here while they're available GordonFreeman Well-Known Member Jan 28, 2010 661 0 0 #10 GordonFreeman, Mar 30, 2010 The game is very good. The stronger part is the innovative smooth controls system that keep you fingers out of your way and let you control the ship really fast and accurate. I love shmups and as far as I know I never saw this control system before. Now, I am left handed, so it took me a little more than the normal to get used to the control. Probably adding the option to switch controls to the other side of the screen would help left handed gamers. Music is OK and even thou the review on Appspy says you can play your own music I didn't find out how they do it. The game weak spot is graphics, they are just a little simple. Overall the game controls gives life to this game and makes it really good and fun to play. I wish the dev would add the option to switch sides for the controls. Also a little retouch to the graphics would be great. Selachii Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Nov 13, 2009 659 6 18 Game Designer Netherlands http://www.firigames.com #11 Selachii, Apr 7, 2010 Lite version incoming Thanks for your feedback GordonFreeman. We actually considered a 'lefty' switch, as it's relatively easy to do for the control scheme. However, the content is also more focussed on the left side of the screen, so that's where it starts to get tricky. Furthermore, both thumbs are equally important, so it's not like right handed users are at an obvious advantage in the current situation. So, we considered it, but in the end everybody will take a minute to get used to the system, regardless of being left or right handed. We'll keep our eyes and ears open for more feedback on this, of course. We're currently also working on a Lite version of the game, which will include the tutorial and the two following stages. No content has been removed from these two stages, so the weapons and upgrading are available just like they are in the full version of Flare Elite. The Lite version is scheduled to be released somewhere next week, so keep an eye out for it. Selachii Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Nov 13, 2009 659 6 18 Game Designer Netherlands http://www.firigames.com #15 Selachii, Apr 13, 2010 Though there's a short learning curve involved it offers very fast response and accurate control without putting your finger on top of your ship and obstructing the view. Gabrien Well-Known Member Nov 24, 2009 5,148 0 36 #16 Gabrien, Apr 13, 2010 Most shmups have the option of being able to control your ship with finger positioned anywhere on screen, not only on top of your ship. And there is no learning curve at all. The response in this case seems no slower, nor the accuracy any lesser. Honestly, I am not being "difficult" for sport; it's just you asked for impressions and mine was that I saw no advantage to this control method whatsoever, but only an inexplicable detraction from the game's intuitiveness. Selachii Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Nov 13, 2009 659 6 18 Game Designer Netherlands http://www.firigames.com #17 Selachii, Apr 13, 2010 And your impressions are much appreciated To continue the discussion, I think the "anywhere on screen" with 1:1 mapping still obstructs the screen too much, having it on another ratio basically makes a dpad, which I think isn't accurate/fast enough. I like how Espgaluda did it with having the X-axis on 1:1 and the Y-axis on a ratio, but I still stand by our own system for busy stages near the end of the game. There's some footage in our trailer. Please continue "being difficult" (your words! ), healthy discussion is good imo and I find it interesting to see how players experience the game. It is mostly an update to properly work on modern day devices, but we also updated some basic things like the control scheme (which was novel at the time, but is now simply outdated), 60fps and some textures.
