omg omg omg http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/22/square-enix-ceo-were-going-to-explore-the-possibility-of-ffv/ So far, Square Enix has said that a Final Fantasy VII remake would be "unrealistic," "tough to do in HD" and "not happening." But hold out hope, die-hards, because during an interview at FFXIII's launch party, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada finally admitted that the company is "going to explore the possibility" of revisiting the classic RPG. He didn't completely reverse the long-held position, as he says Square Enix has to decide "whether or not we're going to do it, if we're going to do it, and the platform," but he did finally admit that there have been a lot of fan requests to see the game in a new form, so he's giving it some solid thought. Of course, the huge success of the game's re-release on PSN probably didn't hurt either. If Square's convinced a remake will sell (and people will play through Gaia yet again, possibly even on yet another platform), we'll probably see it somewhere sooner or later.
I would kill for an update of FFVII. I know some people are sick of the sight of the game by now (what with all the spinoffs), but it's always been one of my favourites. FFVII redone with the visual quality of FFXIII would make me very happy indeed... On a side note, I don't mean to come across as absent minded, but Square-Enix said it would be difficult to do in HD... why exactly? Also, one of the comments on that site is quite interesting: "I know what he's thinking and I hope he understands the ramifications of a FF7 remake on the DS" This wouldn't be completely unsurprising as SE have been remaking the FF's for the DS and this would be one way to remake it without going HD. Not to mention that the SE CEO said they'd have to consider if they were going to go ahead with it and on what platform. Personally, whilst that would be cool, I'd rather have it on a console.
I can't imagine how gaming forums would react to this though. Lots of people love FFVII, but those who hate it will not. ever. shut. up. Then of course the uber-hardcore fans will complain over every miniscule change in gameplay... phoenix down goes up by 1Gil and they turn violent, "It's not FFVII anymore!".
I don't "hate" it...I just think it is very much overrated. Frankly I thought Grandia, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Star Control II (don't argue, action/RPGs are still RPGs) were the best RPGs of that console gen (SCII appeared on 3DO).
In my experience, they're usually just responding to the hate threads. It's easy to like something and keep quiet, but when you hate it your whole life revolves around proving how utterly correct you are and converting everyone else on the planet to your way of thinking. Topic usually arises in a situation such as this: Person 1: FFXIII is the best FF since X. Person 2: FFXIII is the best FF since VII. Person 3/4/5/6/7/8: I can't even begin to explain how wrong/ignorant/young/stupid you are.
If you ask me, FFXIII is the best FF since XII! Which, I think, logically means that XII is better than XIII, but still not as good as some of the others. But I see your point.
Well I would be damned if a remake for Final Fantasy VII wasn't being planned for right about now; Kotaku.com has published so many articles these past weeks about the developers "Wanting to do a remake, but it would take time", and "We never tire to get questions about a possible remake for Final Fantasy VII" , One thing is sure though, it won't hit the shelves until earliest 2014 - 2015, and by then, who knows what more games there is to be fanboyish about? I know I'll be playing Diablo 3
