They could release through FF9 on even a 1g ipod touch imo. Remember the PS1 that FF7-9 were released on ran at only 33Mhz. Now FFVII already works on the ipod at a decent rate through a crap emulator for jailbroken phones. Imagine what could be done if the code was actually optimized for this platform, instead of just trying to emulate an SNES or Playstation. Imagine what it would be like if Square released a new game for the iPhone platform instead of just porting old assets, how cool would that be? I wish square the best and well I may buy the games produced when I was 4 I would really rather some new content...

Just saw that Square Enix put up this site:

    http://dlgames.square-enix.com/ff/

But according to some websites, FF I & II will maybe be available later /at the end of this year, because this project has just started. There will be new designed graphics and completely new controls for the iDevices, not just a simple port from the handheld consoles, even if the games are based on the PSP games.

Every few weeks, S/E said, their website for the iDevice versions of FF I & II will be updated with news.

lol at the end of this year? Umm no, I highly doubt that; especially since the website says "available soon." I'd say no more than two months.

I've read that on a big german iPhone page, dunno which right now, have to look. They even said that FF I & II will be designed to use the adventages of the 4G, too.

S/E stated, that the design process has just begun.
So I think it will be at least 6 months.

color me skeptical but all this is and all it will ever be is a port right? They are not adding anything else that is not alread on the PSP version right? If it takes a company of Squares wieght 6 months + to make a UI for a 20 year old game I am not impressed...

    Price?

Okay here's my issue: SE's current apps sell for around $4.99 and up. Vanguard, Song of the Summoner, Hills and Rivers, and their TD game which is so old I don't even remember the name now. I understand that FF1 & 2 are ports and were released nearly two decades ago, but I wonder how much they'll price it for when Sliding Heroes, which has nowhere near the play value of an FF RPG sold for what, $4?

If they sell them for more than $5, they better be tuned for the iPhone well with innovative controls and remastered graphics. After buying several games from SE, and I probably will keep doing that, I keep walking away thinking I overpaid yet still feel like I needed it. Damn SE games are like crack.

The graphics look pretty damn good right now, I'd say. Very sharp, beautiful colors. As for controls, they don't really matter as much for a game like this, but lets hope SE does a good job with them.

I doubt they'd price this any higher than 10 bucks, which would still be a lot cheaper than the PSP port. Gotta love the app store ;)

As far as I see this are mostly the same graphics as the PSP version. Looks nice but I doubt they add new gameplay elements so... It will be not better then for example Zenonia (for me)

*Fanfare* SE ports of FF 1&2. Although I dont see why they just dont port the cellphone titles im pretty sure that would blow the market.

Actually, they are redesigning the controls and the graphics for the iPhone.
It's not just a PSP port. I think both games will come bundeled for 9.99$.... or better: I hope so... ;)

To all people asking for 5.99 or less for each final fantasy game. It ain't going to happen. Final fantasy 1 and 2 for the psp are about 21.99 each. The ds version was bundled due to square's uncertainty than and it wad priced at 39.99 than and rare to find. Since square enix is using the same or better graphics engine than the psp ports, one is assuming that both games will be 9.99 each. Hope alot of people buy this as only sales, will entice square enix to port more FF and DQ games in the future, as these games are only a testing of the iPhone rpg market.

i hope they ported FF3 and FF4 from the DS instead of this one,or the Dragon Quest games. Still, it's better than nothing. Hope Mistwalker studios won't disappoint.

Yes, I hope that Mistwalker will release a fantastic turn-based RPG... let's see.

Dragon Quest VIII was one of the best... I'd like to see that, too.

Dragon Quest isn't so widely ported for some reason, but in my opinion is far superior to most of the Final Fantasy series. FF6 was obviously stellar though.

As I've stated already, the reason DQ isn't ported widely is because Horii the creator doesn't allow it. The only time an older DQ is rereleased is via a remake specifically for the platform it released upon, and a substantial remake at that (his words). The remakes are not ported.

So DQ won't go to the App store, not least because Horii's efforts are squarely focused on the DS, for obvious reasons (DQ remakes sell 1.5 million plus, DQIX over 4 million, all at full price). Any remakes will go to that platform, as we see with the upcoming DQVI remake. As for DQVII and even DQVIII remakes, chances are Horii will wait out the next generation of portables (PSP2 / DS2) to see which one gets the highest userbase and RPG sales, as he always does when deciding where to take the DQ series.

Yes, but those prices for DS and PSP versions have to take into account something that the iPhone does not: physical product and all the costs and headaches associated with it.
There's the licensing fees paid to Sony and Nintendo for release on "their" format (cart or UMD) then there's the costs of the development environment, the costs of retail and distribution, marketing, etc.
You just don't have those with an iPhone release via iTunes. I believe that a modern AAA-title developer can make MORE money releasing a much-anticipated game for the iPhone than they could for the PSP or DS just due to the lower development, retail, and marketing costs.
Provided the game doesn't suck, of course.
