This is good, Square is listening to us :)

Hope to see FF4 and FF6 soon, now that's the kind of nostalgia I could play!

Looks like they're going the same route they took with the DS/GBA.
    First release FF 1 & 2, remake 3 & 4 into 3D games for the DS, then 5 & 6.

Alright, their really aren't that many turn based jrpgs out their so I'll take my old school Final Fantasy  sure it may be the large print psp version but it's still good for me at least. I liked the story of the first one and who knows maybe Dragon Quest will show up someday? Please :D

You know it would be nice is SE just threw in both I and II into one download but I suppose that's not good for business :(

Yeah... I wouldn't get your hopes up for more substantial releases. FFI and FFII are basically the whores of SquareEnix, they've been practically everywhere, even the Wonderswan got them.

As for the quality, only FFI has any sort of redeeming factor. FFII whilst an interesting experiment at the time isn't executed very well. A game where you attack your own party members to level up isn't going to hold up, especially when decades pass.

Dragon Quest doesn't get ports, only substantial remakes (that's straight from the DQ boss). The next one up for the remake treatment is DQVII (as DQVI remake is coming this year for DS) and it's looking unlikely to come anytime soon, because the DS' successor isn't around yet (as the DS is probably not enough to make a substantial remake of it).

This is great..... I mean its not the best, but its one step closer to FF IV, VI OR VII i guess... Thats what we all really want, right? Why tease us like this though? SQUARE!!! Just freaking spend a couple weeks and port over the stuff that people REALLY want to play and make some freakin $$$....

Oh well, I'm done complaining... This really is great to see FF land on the idevice. Ive been waiting for this like many others.

Eh, I never much cared for FFI & II, so depending on if they add anything or something, probably won't pick these up.

However. I do like the possibilities this opens up, if they bring I & II, then they may bring more. I myself would most look forward to 6, but the full ine of FF would be a force to be reckoned with in the App Store.

    Good stuff!

how do you all feel the other RPG's currently available for the idevice stack up against FF 1&2? Just curious....

i'd say 1 is better than a decent chunk, but 2 is about on par with the rest of the garbage.

Sometimes it seems to me that this is the most defeatist gaming community around. First, the general consensus was that we would never get a major console game on the iPlatform. Then along comes Rockstar and pops our cherry. But do we learn our lesson? Nah! We said that Square Enix would never release a Final Fantasy for the iPhone. Well, now they are. I would call that encouraging news. But you see, they're not the right Final Fantasy games, so it doesn't count. They will never release the ones we really want.

Personally, I rather err on the side of optimism.

Pretty much this. FFI is barebones, with many elements that most RPG fans (who are more familiar with IV, VI, and especially VII) will find frustrating. FFII is more ambitious but a perfect example of flawed execution.

It has nothing to do with defeatism at all. FFI and FFII are on platforms big and small. Their presence on the platform means very little outside of SE doesn't really care where they end up.

Those that said SE would never release FF on the iPhone obviously had no idea what they were talking about, because it would actually be strange for FFI and FFII not to appear on anything remotely popular, as they've been passed around that much.

I'm sure they're running the numbers.
And by numbers I mean the total number of iPhones and iPod Touches sold to date.
Gotta be more than 50 million combined. I think it was around February 2009 when there were ~50 million in total number of PSPs sold.
Now, when you look at the easy-as-hell distribution channel Apple provides with iTunes compared to Sony's PSP it shouldn't surprise anyone here that we're only seeing the beginning. Also look at how much cheaper it is to jump into iPhone development than it is for the PSP. PSP dev kit buy-in is much, much more.
Eventually major PSP devs are going to seriously look at dumping developing for the PSP and jump to the iPhone/iPod Touch.
Look at the quality and quantity of many of the PSP titles released in the last 12 months and then compare those titles with the iPhone releases.
Quality on the iPhone is going up, quality on the PSP has pretty much flatlined.
The PSP Go is the final nail in Sony's portable game playing coffin by splitting the PSP market and pretty much pissing a lot of PSP owners off.

    Doing nothing of importance.
    Somewhere
My current favorite, TNA, doesn't compare to FFI. The amount of time put into the two is vastly different... Let's see how SteamPirates goes first though, I have hopes for that one.

And people, I don't get your hated toward FFI. It's a fantastic game. Sure, it might not have the stuff present in games like FFIV or SMRPG, but it had most of the stuff that makes an RPG. In fact, it pretty much made the genre on consoles. I'm more than happy that it's what we're getting.

Yeah, I wouldn't go around joking like that because some people might mistake you for actually being serious.

As long as 1&2 bring in enough $$$ for square to make it worthwhile, we'll see more of the FF series. They've obviously made enough off of their crappy half assed games that they've put out thus far.

Final Fantasy is not just a series of game. It's also a brand. Until today's announcement, there was not indication that SE was interested in bringing that brand to the iPlatform. Now they are. I think that's a good enough reason to believe that they might bring some of the other games in the series. Does it mean that Crisis Core is next? I wouldn't be on it (personally, I don't care -- I hate that game with a passion). But the potential is there for other SE properties. To dismiss that potential is being defeatist.
