I'm not the only one that thinks that, others have left similar messages to you about that, obviously it's something you should look at and try and fix. also it's better to not put your words into a quote from me, however I don't respond to every damn thread on the board like you do. Watch your language and name calling, it's not appreciated on this board.
I think a lot of people are annoyed by the fact that Fieldrunners is a relatively expensive game to begin with. Wouldn't you agree Fieldrunners was fairly lacking in content when compared to some other TD games, especially when price is added to the equation? Then Subatomic Studios come out with an update that people were hoping would add a significant amount of content, and they're being charged for every single bit of it. I understand where they're coming from, although I'm probably not as passionate towards the subject as a lot of people seem to be. Hell, I don't even own Fieldrunners because I could never justify the AUD $4 for so little content. I have played it, though, several many times. I'd say more so than some people in this thread *looking at the guy that didn't know fast-forward is unlocked at level 75.* I could Buy Real Racing for less than the full Fieldrunners game. Don't start with the "Go buy RR instead then, hur hur!" I'm just saying, Fieldrunners isn't exactly great value for money and it isn't hard to see why people aren't pleased.
Game Impressions Got no problem with the fact the devs want to charge for the update. I personally will not be buying it, but if they want to charge for it, so be it. There are a bunch of games out there now that are starting in with this whole "in game purchase" as they see it as a way to generate a much greater revenue. Great. Look for this to be the trend for awhile. In my mind, some games will be able to get away with this because they are just too cool to not upgrade and will be worth the extra cash. I suspect though, that most will suffer when they go in this direction and may even get pushed aside. Like right off the device, to make room for a program that gives free updates. Consumers can be a fickle bunch. Time will tell.
I have played both new maps since yesterday. I love Field runners and both new maps do require some thinking/planning out. Worth the money for me since I will be playing this for many times more. To each his own. I highly recommend the new maps to all TD lovers. A cup of coffee is worth it
Some people like them, some don't. What I don't understand is, why the ones that don't like them have to be so aggressive in attacking and provoking those who like? What's their purpose?? I mean, I don't like NOVA. It's good, but even if it goes down to $2, I still won't buy it as I generally don't like FPS. Does that mean I have to come and whine endlessly in NOVA thread? To expect all them to agree with me or I'll call them all illogical? If I don't like it, I don't buy it. Simple as that.
Fieldrunners was one of the very first TD games available though. back then when the genre was fairly new it was considered pretty excellent, I know I absolutely loved the game. Since then though we've gotten a lot of better games that offer a lot more: the creeps, geodefense, 7 cities, etc and Fieldrunners has fallen behind
To the people who bought Fieldrunners, did you say "I'm buying this game only because they're going to add at least 4 new maps for free."? I don't know about you but when I bought Fieldrunners, it was one of the most complete and polished games on the App Store. And that was just with Grasslands. Then they added Crossroads for free. And then they added Drylands for free. Now they want to charge $2 for 2 new maps and people are complaining.
Wow - where is the discussion on the actual game and new maps? Feels like all these threads instantly turn into price discussions and nobody talks about the actual games.
Game Impressions Food for thought, there is a definite difference between "updating" an existing game, and creating a "new" game. In the past, devs have gone with the thought of updates go to the buyer of the original game, if they make a completely different game, like Sentinel and then Sentinel 2, or Dig it, and Dig it 2, then they sell them as such. But if they only bring in more maps, or add in game enhancements, the updates as a rule "have been" free and a bonus to the original supporter of the game. But the times are a changing. I see a near future where devs will do away with in game updates free of charge and will make a habit of declaring some update deserves the added coinage to enjoy. Like I said previously, some games will be able to get away with this. It's my opinion that most will not.
Seriously, did people really expect this team to give them away for free after nearly months of working on them and the PSP content? And since when is $5 expensive for a game? For anything? Well for a piece of candy maybe...
I'm sorry, but $5 is expensive in the AppStore. When people complain about loosing $1.19 ($.99), $5 is a lot. This is the market. Worth it or not, a lot of people aren't pleased and that's really what it comes down to. Again, this isn't necessarily my opinion, but it seems to be the general consensus.
All in all I have given this dev about $15AUD. 8.45 for the PSP version which is amazing and 6 dollars for the original version of fieldrunners (got it on day 1 release). I do not regret this as I look forward to them making many extremely polished games in the future. The money helps that. I have given them $15 and also plan to give them $2.40 for the extra 2 maps because I love Their work past and future. Simple. I am purely buying these maps on the iphone in support of the dev. I already have them on PSP I just like them and think they do a top job at creating polished and great games.
Game Impressions Sounds like it is worth it to you. You are probably in a minority though. Like I said, there will be games worth it to "some" folks to pay for in game updates. The market is going in that direction. The problem will be, "most" games will not be worth paying for updates and may receive an unwanted backlash effect as consumers decide to look elsewhere. It is what it is. If you think the game is so cool and you don't mind paying for your updates, fine. If this attitude of updates are pay as you go catches on as I believe it will, most of us will long for the day when devs updated their games because they wanted more folks to buy it and gave those that supported them by already buying the game with a no cost bonus. Bottom line for me----update for a current game should be free. I am happy to pay for a new game. Have spent hundreds already, so obviously not an issue. If there is a "Fieldrunners 2" that comes out, I will probably buy it. I liked the first one. See the issue here is, are there really enough changes in the game to make it an "update" or is it worthy of a whole new game and therefore more money. Some updates will be worth it I guess. Most will not. For me, if they charged me a couple of bucks for some more maps in an update of Uniwar, I would buy them. Why? Cause I really like that game, and more maps would be worth the extra money. Would I prefer them to make a Uniwar 2 with all new maps and great upgrades? You betcha! Would buy it in a heartbeat. Back to my point, some games will be worth it to some people. Most will not. As a "business model" , I hope devs stay with free updates and only charge us for new games.
I wish we could spend more time discussing games instead of the "worth" of games. For people with good jobs, spending a couple bucks on an iPhone game isn't even worth thinking about before impulse buying. If you're on a monthly allowance of iTunes gift cards from your parents, of course you're going to obsess over each cent of your iTunes credit. These two types of people are never going to be able to come to any kind of agreement on the "worth" of anything because both have such severely different perspectives on money, life, and the worth of nearly everything-- Not just DLC.
You are obviously an educated man, Hodapp. I mean that sincerely. Your words are thought out and you make really good points. I appreciate that in an Admin. To your statement, "I wish we could spend more time discussing games instead of the "worth" of games, I agree with your sentiment. However, I believe the whole "charge for in game updates" is a fairly new phenomenon and will be a topic of discussion for some time. As far as impulse buying goes, I have mucho denaro and the main reason for that is I don't allow myself to impulse buy. So not just the kiddies and their itunes cards are tight. I would like to say again, you are a very intelligent person and you should be given respect for that during any exchange of ideas in this forum. Whether we agree or not.
Hi, Hodapp, there are those who are on a budget and do not live with their parents. For you to break your argument down to those who have "good jobs" and those "on a monthly allowance of iTunes gift cards from your parents" does not take a large populous of users who live check to check and who may even support a family. Those of us who do, budget their money for non essentials such as apps for their Iphone or Ipod Touch. Some of us do concern ourselves with the cost of an app or DLC. That being said, if you fall into this category, as I do, then just do not buy the app or DLC. Complaining about it on a web forum makes you look petty and not grateful for the effort put forth by the developer. I concern my complaining to stuff happening in the real world, not the cost of an inconsequential app or game. That being said, I will not be getting the new maps but that is just because I do not play the game or plan to put it back on my Touch, not the cost. The game was nice but with so much new stuff out, I found it a bit boring the last time I played it. David
I was over simplifying things, of course there are different situations between the extremes of having enough money to buy every game that is released and only having a $10 iTunes card to last you through the whole month. I figured that kind of went without saying.
