I can't speak for the sequels cause I never got to play them, but Paper Mario on the n64 was a masterpiece. Also really liked the combat system on Kingdom Hearts, I felt every RPG should have that combat system after playing it. Oblivion = RPG? If it does then that's my favorite ever.
my favourites will always be Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and Morrowind Recently I have been playing Alpha Protocol - I can understand how it got the reviews it did, it reminds me of Vampire: Bloodlines - lacking a final bit of polish. But there is so much depth to the game, I could easily see myself playing through it 3 or 4 times with different character types. Right now I am playing strictly pistols, diplomacy, and stealth - but next run I am going to go for a more direct approach. Excellent game.
Final Fantasy VI (or Final Fantasy III on SNES) Earthbound (SNES) Baulder's Gate II (PC) Chrono Trigger (SNES) Diablo (PC; barely an RPG imo but at the time was a blast) For iOS The Quest Gold and Knighturn can not be beat.
Was it the N64 one that had Mario in a wrestling ring as The Great Gonzales and Rawk Hawk about halfway into the game's story? Wait, I think that was the GCN one. That's the one I played and loved to bits.
Console: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Not sure if it really counts but I included it here due to the ability to level up Carl Johnson's Speed, strength, driving skills and weapon Handling) Handheld: Crisis Core: Final Fantasy Pokemon IOS: Aralon Sword and shadow Dungeon Raid (Puzzle with RPG Elements)
My first RPG experience was Fairy Tale Adventure on the Amiga. Affectionately known as "plinky plonky" in our house. I thought it was revolutionary and couldn't get enough of it. More recently, Tales of Symphonia on the Cube and Oblivion on PS3 ate up a sickening amount of my time. I also liked Skies of Arcadia on the Cube. Memorable voice acting there, like "oh" and "aye aye captain". LOL but seriously it had a lot of heart. And I thought the Cube's Fire emblem was superb and the Wii's quite good. (Is FE an RPG?)
Chrono Trigger (snes/ps1/ds), Glory of hercules(ds), FF 3, 4, 6, 8, 9....loved 7 but ..not enough, Crisis Core (psp), Tales of innocence (ds-translation patch 100%), Saga 2 (ds- translation patch 100%), Saga Frontier 1 (ps1), Xenogears (ps1), World Ends with You (ds), Persona 2,3,4 (ps1,ps2,psp,ds), Etrian Odyssey 1,2,3 (ds), Front Mission (ps1), Kartia (ps1), FF tactics (ps1), Golden Sun 1+2 (GBA) and Golden Sun-Dark Dawn (ds) ......hmmmmmmm AND THE BEAT GOES ON....
Oh another RPG that's a favorite of mine is EGG (Elemental Gimmick Gear) for the Dreamcast. It's like A Link to the Past but way harder!
Yeah, those gameboy games were such an important part of my childhood that even after I didnt care about Pokemon I made sure to get the FireRed remake when it came out.
I stopped caring about Pokemon when they started shoving out more and more batches of them after the original 151. I care a lot about story in games (Yes I know games are mainly a form of escapism but I'm a screenwriting major so storytelling in videogames fascinates me) so the fact that I was told "Well you see, it turns out that there's pre-evolutions to the Pokemon you already know and oh lookie here, we've found out these other Pokemon exist out of nowhere" without it being explained in a way that makes sense to the world they created made me just throw in the towel and forget about that series. Great for the gameplay alone though, the Pokemon games. I love the rock, paper, scissor mechanic for the fighting. It felt so balanced until they got into pokemon that were half rock half water type, half grass half fire type, and all sorts of crazy things. I don't want to turn this into a Pokemon rant so I'll stop haha
Ding! Me too. I saw the appeal in the original games, but I'm not an idiot... they're not just gonna shove more sprites in and sell me the same thing over and over. Pokemon is undoubtedly Nintendo's best ever plan at squeezing money out of kids... with the Wii in second place, only that squeezes money out of adults that have kids.
Paper Mario/Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Those and Mother 3 (fan translation) are the only 3 RPGs I've ever really liked, and I consider the Paper Mario games (the real ones) to be two of the most fun (and funny) games ever, of any type. Typing that makes me want to replay them....
