I highly recommend grabbing free event servants. Even if you are not particularly fond of the character, chances are you won't get more than 10 4* servants in a year if you're f2p, so any helping hand helps, especially one that costs you no ascension materials and comes at a whopping free max leveled NP. Nobu is also leaps and bounds better than Halloween Liz as a damage dealer, thanks to her strong third skill, and the fact that her NP is effective against any enemy saber-class servant, more so if they are divine (Altera is pretty much dead meat). Story-wise, whimsical events aside, I found Okeanos to be a big improvement compared to Septem, pretty exciting battles and fun characters. Not a lot is at stake yet, so for now likeable characters and cool adventures are the most you're gonna get out of the current chapters.
I did with Bathory for Halloween because my best mage is Hans, who isn't much of a damage dealer. I'm not bothering with Oda, because I have Emiya at 92 and the skulls take significant effort to acquire. The Christmas event is an interesting case. I only have Martha at 50, but ought to easily have all her ascension mats by the time the current event ends. On a different note, I got a 7th-day ticket yesterday and managed to yolo a Poster Girl event CE. Score!
About Hans...he's actually one of the best caster bros you can get in the game. Take a look at his NP - it has great heals and if paired up with your hardest-hitting servants, he can make them do some really scary damage. You won't regret building him up. But yeah, he's not much of a damage-dealer himself - getting Eli-chan was a good decision (better than nothing, anyway). +1 to this. Free event servants help to even the playing field for anyone who refuses to spend real-world money (& has horrible RNG), and they will be invaluable down the line when both the story & difficulty really starts to pick up. Especially don't miss out on the Kara no Kyoukai and Prisma Ilya events, those servants are in my A-team for being so reliable (I'd also include Onigashima and the 2nd Christmas event, but the NA players would have to wait until next Christmas for that...) Re the main quests, try not to judge too early - Okeanos is still relatively early-game. That's...a really huge investment I got her during the new year (she was my first 2017 servant, so it was a perfect New Year's gift), but I didn't know that she would be so exclusive...just saw that she would appear in a main quest chapter and assumed she would naturally end up on story gacha. If it makes you feel better, I have no outstanding casters (Eli-chan & Irisviel are my only 4* casters, I naturally have no 5*), so I'm deeply jealous of your NP 2 Sanzo.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I love Hans. He typically sits in my first reserve slot, right in front of Heracles. Just to give an example of how a free player can make things work (for anyone that might read), I’ve never found a kaleidoscope (start with 80% charge on np (super) attack), and only have one Imaginary around (60%). So I keep a maxed out Dragon’s Meridian (50%) on Hans. It’s cheap, and with his skills, it lets me use his noble phantasm as soon as he enters the field. Great stuff.

I wonder why they are starting a Christmas event so early. Two full weeks before the event ran for the Japanese version. I presume this will be followed by the release of the London chapter. Hopefully, since it would actually be nice to have an event break.

For anyone playing the JP version, who did you choose for your free 4* servant pick? It’s been agonising trying to choose just one.
It really depends who you like and who you own. (I'd I didn't have Saber Alter already she'd be my first pick. I almost picked another for np2) Definitely pick a servant you like first of all. Second criteria for me is one that is story locked. If it's not story locked, you might end up getting that servant randomly while rolling an event banner. My pick last time was Artoria Lancer Alter. This current one I picked Danzo.
I’ve been waffling between Archer Inferno (Gamer Girl) and Walkure (because, you know, package deal). I’m still waffling.
The Valkyries were my first choice but they weren't story locked so I decided to take my chances on getting them randomly some other time. Tomoe has one of my favorite designs. She's a good pick. I really love her artist.
So I went for Archer Inferno in the end. No regrets. I also did a couple of ticket rolls for the Christmas rerun, saw the multicoloured glowing circle and thought for a single glorious moment that I’d gotten Ereshkigal at last. It turns out to be Francis Drake, which means I’ve now brought her up to np5 against all odds and with everything else maxed out, concluded 3 years of Drake loyalty. There’s not much I can conceivably do to make her even more OP than she already is.
You could feed her all the gold fous.... (Took me over $100+my entire huge saved up quartz stash last year to get 1 Ereshkigal)
