You guys totally just hi-jacked this guy's thread. I guess this is his punishment for posting in the lounge...
got the last copy at EB Games - all games on a single DVD. Decided on starting with Fallout 2 cause I am interested in the setting. So far am loving it. Did start up Tactics - but it looks pretty deep as a tactical strategy game - kind of reminded me of Jagged Alliance 2 but Fallout themed and (maybe?) not quite as deep. ------------------------------------- System Shock 2/Deus Ex >> Fallout, Bioshock ----------------------------------- Can't believe this even got this many pages... even if it is all irrelevant. Also - I don't trust critics, anybody can be payed. ---------------------------------- Further edit: Fallout 1/2 > Fallout 3 Reason being - more humorous, better dialog, deeper storyline, etc. Don't get me wrong - I loved every minute of 3, it just felt shallow afterwards.
Wow, I was expecting this thread at least to have some good Fallout discussion, but most of the pages are just people proving how big their e-peens are. Anyway, I've only played the third one, since I've never been into post-apocalyptic or even futuristic RPGs, but after having fun with Borderlands, I thought I might as well give this one a go, and I was pleasantly surprised by how fun the VATS system was. Still, after this I'm still not overly interested in wasteland settings, I'd much rather walk around in the lands of Cyrodiil (Oblivion) than Fallout, it's just less depressing (I've even got the greener world mod installed for Fallout ).
I know! It's like "this is a Fallout Series thread, not a 3 vs bioshock." Besides, an 89 is still a great score.
It's probably worth pointing out that Metacritic doesn't take into account value for money when it comes to game length. You might get exactly the same enjoyment from the first 10 hours of FO3 as you do Bioshock, then Bioshock is over and Fallout keeps going for another 70 hours.

I don't really like it when people use critic reviews as an objective source to say X is definitively better than Y. Some of my favourite games I think have around 70-80 scores in critic reviews. Also, I haven't played Bioshock, but from the looks of it, I'm not sure where all the sudden comparisons to Fallout 3 came from. I thought it would make more sense to compare F3 to something like Borderlands or even Oblivion (though that would be pushing it).
People dont feed the troll train deralling forum threads. Ok I'd like a post nuclear war game. I wish I had time to make all these games as Puzbox has the capability but not the manpower or time to do it :S can't afford anything in this recession so a lot of bigger games are often cancelled in the design phase as it'll take us too long and we don't have any guarantee of a return. Fallout or any rpg is a massive undertaking, I guess thats why there's no fallout on iphone just yet.
to bad a port of the original 2 games couldn't be done - mind you I think they would work better on the iPad - but I could see them working on the iPhone with a little bit of tweaking.
Fallout 3 and oblivion are very similar. Me and my friend have had long arguments about which is better. (Oblivion FTW!)
I've spent just about 100 hours in each game. I usually don't play console games too much but when it comes to these two I just can't help myself.
Yeah I think they're very similar too, but I've had many people disagree with me on that, for some reason. Overall I think Oblivion is better. It seems a bit deeper to me in terms of character progression, mainly because of the addition of magic and such. In Fallout, the combat consists mostly of shooting people over and over, and occasionally smacking them over the head with something, whereas in Oblivion you had a variety of ways of taking care of enemies with magic, such as buffing yourself, debuffing them, levitating over them, stunning them so you can take shots with your bow, etc. Also I've always personally liked the bright fantasy setting a lot more than post-apocalyptic. Don't get me wrong though, VATS is plenty fun, both games are great.
The only thing bad about Oblivion is all the glitches. Although if your playing on a PC you can fix them, but consoles aren't so lucky.
Fallout has it's share of quest/game-breaking glitches too. I think the worst have been patched but I still found myself following the wiki for each quest I did, since it listed all the possible glitches in advance.
