No, it's not even gonna be close to Pac-Man. The gameplay mechanic is kinda like Grunts. You have a squad trying to get to the other side without getting hurt. It'll be better though. I kinda know how to program. I go to a Private School and we have a tech club were we do a lot of complex stuff like, robots, Photoshop, and more. I'm really tech savvy, so it shouldn't be too hard.
Good luck. I'm sure that you will have no end to folks that would be willing to help you from here. Keep us informed.
Lol u make it out to be like it's going to be a cakewalk. You don't even know how to code, ur just learning. Trust me when I say your getting in too deep. Just because ur tech savvy doesn't mean it "shouldn't be too hard." I'm tech savvy and taught myself Photoshop, creating and programming simple programs and porting them over to the psp( a la c/c++), and have even created a couple of websites with my cousin with flash. That's all simple stuff, I've basicly barely done a hello world into game programming, and I can't do one thing that's on your list, for flamings sake, I hope ur "school" has someway to implant programming into your head, cause there's no way your gonna get this done within 4 months.
Slapshot is playing a role, a dev, in his case. Surely every kid goes through a phase where you want to roleplay somebody. He wants to enjoy how it is to be treated as a dev, the adulation of those who will be believe. Slappy don't think i don't understand how it is to dream but make sure that your dream doesn't start with a lie, as i've said some people actually believes you ( why they do is beyond me) If you want help in seeing your dream come into reality start by asking help the right way, i'm pretty sure someone here can refer you to a good programming course, and as someone here said ' start small'.... dont go way over your head, make a test program perhaps and you will know that programming a notepad clone is not as easy as it sounds esp. someone without previous experience.
I wonder if he can do a notepad clone... It was pretty hard implementing the psp keypad through c/c++ for me when I tried, not to mention getting it to function right. I remember when I first tried I was like WTF... The keypad cokes up and it showd what your writing but when you exit the keypad screen the text doesn't show anymore... I wonder how hard it is to implement the iPhone keyboard and get it to actually have all the functions of notepad. Is iPhone sdk available to win users?? I kind of want to see if I can actually make a notepad program functional for the iPhone xD
I concur! Ahem... slappy maybe you can provide a solution to this notepad problem, this may just be a walk in the park for you since your 'project' is million times more ambitious. You want to live the life of a dev talk like one lol!
No coding is needed. Apple already implements the keyboard. You can change the keyboard's attributes without any code as well. You have to code the done button though, to make the keyboard go away.
Alright, I agree that Slapshot might not be able to pull off everything that he hopes to. I even agree that he might not be able to do any of it before learning more. But seriously guys.... he doesn't sound like a dev? When did we establish a set sound for devs? And about age and experience and all, that shouldn't matter. There are 12 year olds who have made applications that were popular. Just lay off, okay? Isn't it enough that if you're right you're right? You don't need to try to discourage him. I believe Slapshot can do it if he really tries and puts in a lot of effort. After all, Apple started from two guys in a garage ya know! All I'm saying is don't discourage people just because they have an idea they want to try. You could end up ruining the hopes and dreams of a future big-shot. K? So can we all just be nice?
Chill out bro, i'm teaching him not to bite off more than he can chew. I would have left him alone if his declaration isn't based on deceit, he did mention a December release date right? You know as well as i do that it's not gonna happen and know what he probably knows it too! The kid just want to be adored as a dev. You mention 12 yr olds who made an application, that may be true but is it anywhere near a TBS game ( with online intergration and all)? Strategy games are the toughest games to code believe me, its a very complex genre that takes even seasoned programmers longer than 4 months to develop, can't you see why i am so keen on exposing this hoax? He is not doing this in good faith, he is lying his pants off just to be promoted to a dev status here so instead of doing this http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=21953 like what TBN did he wen't on and declared that he will be developing this big TBS title, a developer's wet dream. I've given him a lot of chances to prove himself, AND please stop comparing this to great feats ( e.g apple started on the garage, wright brothers airplane) coz they meant nothing! So please understand that this is a life lesson for him.... he did a stupid stunt in geodefense swarm thread http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=20669&page=8 and now he's doing it again! Respect is to be earned and humility is a virtue slappy!
Agreed, he is biting way more than he can chew, it's plausible hiw much he wants it, but I just don't think he knows the first thing to coding. I'm pretty sure he's written up a little hello world, maybe he thought wow that was easy, now imunna make a strategy game with online multiplayer and a minigame... I'm sorry but with nothing to showcase except his 1000th post, I don't think this is gonna happen.
Just wanted to point out that without Apple the idevices wouldn't exist as well as this site. And without the Wright brothers everyone would've stuck on the ground flightless. So they do in fact mean something. EDIT: if you read the whole page on the Geodefense Swarm thread, it was cause of an accidental tweet(via twitter for those not in the know) that caused him to say that. so it was a flase alarm not a lie.
Oh c'mon! If we are to use the 'great feats' argument into anything then there is no point in debating at all we can all just go ' hey we should give khalid a chance he could be the next bill gates, hey we should give TBS a chance he could be the next bill cosby, hey we should give ' put name here' he could be the next ' put great person or feats here'! That's why it meant nothing coz you can use that argument on anyone even on me on you or the person sitting next to you can be the next us president! Now about the post , did he apologize for that blunder? No he justified it that it was his 1000th post how random is that? People got excited over that post and that is all he had to say, he also put up a test link, what is that for kindly tell me? Now i understand the need for some of you to defend this 'dev' but i think if this kid is by any means worthy of the comparrison you've bestowed upon him ( wright brothers et all) then i think this prodigy is more than capable of defending himself and proving me wrong!
But then if we don't do that, we'll probably miss out on a load of future Bill Gates'. Surely the best way is just to keep your ideas to yourself, sit back and see what happens. If he fails you can pull him up on it at the time, but there's no point in bringing it up now when there's at least a small possibility that something good could come out of it. Edit: do we even know how old Slapshot is?
Read his post and how he answered like he's got it all covered... Do you think he is doing this in good faith? That in his heart of hearts he know he Can pull this off by december? Or is he just playing along? Will you allow a medical intern to do the job of surgeon? What will you do if the driver of the cab you are riding turn out to be a minor without liscense? Will you give him a chance coz he might be the next michael s.? Potential is something his defenders failed to consider, how can someone with very little or even no coding experience believe he can pull it off? Clearly his intention is something else, its like the nerd braging to f*ck the prom queen!
There is a slight difference between someone posing as a dev on a forum and someone posing as a surgeon. Slapshot's not gonna get anyone killed. It makes no difference to me whether or not he manages, I believe him when he says he's going to try. Even if I didn't I'd still give him the benefit of the doubt cause people need encouragement. If December comes and he's got nothing... so what? We move on, it's not as though I'm investing my life savings in it.
i agree with that and that is why i don't want to use that line of argument... But i appreciate the logic in what you've said i'm going to lay off now and allow slappy to do his thing: slappy be humble and don't let this people down at the very least try to make your game a reality dont be a lipservice ok? Good luck!
I promise I did not make a false announcement. I was so excited about that thread that said (geoDefense Swarm is OUT!!) which was a false alarm according to David (The dev). So I went over to the Upcoming thread and said it got approved. But, did you read on? I said "Did you see when I posted it?" and the guy that didn't see it realized I posted it when the other thread just got created and he apologized to me. I would not make a fake announcement ever in my life, I promise. I don't like ticking people off.
Apple started out in a garage. And yet, I can guarantee you they were already excellent programmers. I'm not talking about commercial experience here, but KNOWLEDGE. Slapshop doesn't have the knowledge. "I kinda know how to program" and being "tech savvy" does not make you a programmer. My 11 year old brother is very tech savvy. It definitely won't be enough to make notepad. That is a fact. I am not trying to discourage him from dreaming, or even setting the lofty goal of creating a TBS. I definitely don't want to stifle talent. The point of my post is to purely try and give Slapshot some semblance of perspective. Walk before you can run. Notepad before you can TBS. As a programmer, I can tell you, that making a game is not fun. For most programmers, the end result is not fun. It is the actual process that is the interesting bit. The path you take when you program. Too many beginners these days focus on the end product, the ambitious TBS, the MMORPG, the Quake killer. When they realise that just to get the fading splash screen showing their company name takes a couple of hours to pull off, they get all frustrated and wonder why they can't make games easily. Do not stop dreaming Slapshot. Never take your eyes off the goal. The TBS will be yours, someday. But surely the wise thing to do would be to set yourself smaller goals first, milestones in your games programmer career if you will. A portfolio of smaller projects to prove to yourself that you can do it, and it's always a great way of having something of your own to show when trying to get a team together to make the ultimate game in the future. EDIT: By the way, I am a professional full time games developer currently working on Flash/Flex and the iPhone for the company I work for. I have had 3 years education at uni studying Computer Science, and additonal 2 years experience commercially. Considering I am full time, I would only have evenings and weekends to make my own game (similar to Slapshot if he goes to school). Taking all of this experience and knowledge and I believe I have, I estimate that by MYSELF if I was to make a TBS containing all the features that Slapshot described, it would take approximately 6 months to 1 year depending on level of polish and game content. 6 months at least to get both the networking architecture, as well as the game engine working (without content and pretty graphics). If Slapshot can do it by December, I think we have ourselves a prodigy. I'm talking someone greater than Bill Gates/Zuckerberg/Google guys/David Braben in potential here.
Thank you in succeeding to convey the message i tried to send 8 pages ago, i hope people understand it better now.
ya he used a much kinder way of explaining. i didn't really like yours. too much crap that could stop this kid from dreaming, at least Phi6 made it alot kinder. In turn making it alot more understandable.
