It was a tad confusing but I'm sure that's partly because I was just thrust right into the game. I used to love the economy in Eve so I'm hoping it's done the same way here. Looking forward to release tomorrow and to getting our Touch Arcade clan going. JasonLL likes this. Asp Well-Known Member Aug 3, 2017 769 196 43 #5 Asp, Aug 13, 2020 Good grief! Who’s got time for this? Someone pass me an idle game. There’s free to pay, monthly pay to play, and one-off purchases. Only things missing are loot boxes. Talk on Discord is that it’s possible to survive for free. Just keep a low profile. Not played on PC so working through the tutorials. I like the game design of a huge open sandbox with much choice of various paths or careers. Upgrading skills seems a big part of it, and there are lots of them. I’m thinking that to get the best from Eve Echoes I’d have to give up everything else. Nonstickron Well-Known Member Sep 24, 2009 312 32 28 Graphic Artist / Pre-Press Central Florida http://www.rgdesignhouse.com #6 Nonstickron, Aug 13, 2020 I played it for like a year, a bit over a decade ago. That's pretty much how it is on PC these days too. You have free play tier, but you can only progress so far without subbing. The game has a real life money to in game money conversion ratio based off of the fact that you can buy subscription codes with in game money. So it's literally pay to win...but it's sorta misleading. If you look at the conversion ratio, the massive "I win" capital ships cost tens of thousands of real world dollars in in game currency. And you can lose them fairly easily without a well coordinated fleet of other player ships supporting you. Even then, if you're an idiot...you won't keep it for long. And yes, the game demands time, unless you're literally throwing money at it. Back in the day, I was in a corp that was the executive corp of an alliance. Ended up a forum mod for our alliance, what a nightmare that was. Got to where I didn't even have time to play i spent so much time organizing and managing the forum community and keeping track of spreadsheets of members. (spies from other alliances are a big problem in this game) Our Alliance ended up getting crushed and run out of our area of no-sec space by Goonsquad Alliance and basically our Alliance and our Corp disbanded not long after. After all that, I just kinda wished we had stayed small in our little corner of low-sec mining together and having skirmishes with random pirates. adin and Asp like this. Asp Well-Known Member Aug 3, 2017 769 196 43 #7 Asp, Aug 13, 2020 Thanks for the insight. Staying small seems the way to go, mining, or even a shipbuilding enterprise looks interesting. To do that you have to take risks. Risk=Reward is the name of the game. It's really a different kind of game in that way. That's really what people get addicted to, I think. Alex DeLargest Well-Known Member Dec 16, 2010 346 122 43 Male USA/France #9 Alex DeLargest, Aug 13, 2020 I’ve only vicariously ‘played’ EVE through reading and watch others play it, but yeah, it’s pay to win in the same way that real life is. I don’t mean to get political here, but it’s kind of like Bloomberg’s candidacy. If you have the money, you can immediately buy the supplies and talent but that in no way guarantees success and you’ve likely just poured money into a hole in making yourself a target reviled by everyone. I normally balk at pay to win mechanics, but EVE is one place wherein they are important to the function of what acts as a pretty damn good simulation of actual real world economic systems. Because it is, for all intents and purposes, a real world economic system in a way that few others game economies are. Note, while I played the beta of Echoes, it didn’t really have the economy turned on, and I don’t really know if this holds true for what NetEase is doing here.
