This confuses me. To get a "buttery-smooth" game, one will need to turn off the dynamic lighting. With the lighting on, the game is not smooth. Yes? So, why develop a game for the iOS platform that wasn't "buttery-smooth" for someone, even if they have the latest hardware and software? I can't understand the logic in this. Is there someone out there who can have a lovely smooth experience with the dynamic lighting on, perhaps someone with an "iPhone 5" or an "iPad 2"? The game is essentially a DS shooter and, as such, has to be smooth, with tight controls and a consistently high frame rate so to allow the player a fair chance of dealing with the challenges. I'm beginning to regret picking up this game because it has none of those things. And, now, the only solution being offered is one where we can turn off all the "pretty lights", part of the package that we paid for? Sorry. I don't understand the logic of the developer here. It's a shame. They should take a look at what does constitute a good DS game, i.e. "Infinity Field", "Meteor Blitz", "Minigore", etc... and think about how they deliver on graphics, lighting, controls, frame rate, and all those things a DS-gamer wants for addictive and involving gameplay. Disappointed. To all those who haven't yet bought the game, all I can say is avoid it until a better solution is found. And, if you're looking for a, generally, better-rounded product, then as others have said here, Revolt is what you want - not perfect, but better.
Revolt is much worse, honestly. It is slow and laggy no matter what. I have played one of the latest builds before release (so not the last and not the fixed one) and there is no comparison.
Strange. People are having differing opinions on this. I've not experienced so much lagging on Revolt - I'm not saying it's perfect, not at all. However Etolis, for me at least, is not as good and, as others say in this thread, lacking character - instead offering up a bowl of a something almost gruel-like. I find the controls and general gameplay much less satisfying, however, that is just my opinion.
It's my opinion as well. Revolt is better in every way I can think of. It's worth noting that the comparison is actually apt in this instance and not just a case of "my game is better than yours" since these two games are particularly alike. Technically, visually, aurally, and from the simple perspective of what is more fun and more satisfying to play, Revolt clearly comes out on top for my money. Also the stuttering and jerkiness NEVER fully goes away in this game. Not after 2 minutes and not after 20. At least in Revolt it really DID, and with recent updates has been improved upon significantly.
As for the gameplay, that goes down to taste so no dispute there. They are very very different games sharing only the concept in the visuals. As for performance ... maybe the fact that I play on ipad makes a different and I remove every apps due to the limited memory of the ipad (I do so for any game). I played revolt last week once again on a plane ... and got frustrated again. As for Etolis, I did not play the release version but one of the latest beta builds. So if something was changed since then ... that might explain the lag. I might pick it up and try for release version for my self.
I've had much better experience once I turned off the dynamic camera, i realised one of the thjbgs lacking was 'not making me feel sick' its very jerky it seems with the dynamic cam. Oh and turned off auto aim. Immediate Improvements, I've no idea what the extra weapons do though, more information there would be useful. Why would I want to spend points on the shotgun or the fuze rifle. and the different enemies, they are different, but don't seem to pose a more serious threat than the other types. There's no real connection or 'oh shit a big un with the grenade launcher' sorta moments. Just, blam kill it, blam kill it. So, that's my longer way of repeating what others above me have said. Whoops
I actually played with the same settings, no dynamic camera and no auto aim. I tried the former and I hate the latter (in every game).
Fair enoughI can see the perspective. I should say, however, that the game is actually quite smooth as isI just want to make it as good as it can be. Everyone has different tastes. The dynamic lights are not going away for good or anythingjust giving people options. You could say I'm a sucker for things that look good but I don't want that to be a problem for people who don't care as much. Perhaps in hindsight it should have been there already. Its hard to find a good looking iPhone game that doesn't hit a bump in the road now and then. Beauty and game intensity is most definitely a balancing act of priorities. Revolt looks good because of the dynamic lights (in my opinion) but, I'll admit, there are many great games without them (like NOVA 2).
Check out the UFA Databank in the main menu. In there you'll find a whole slew of information about the enemies and what is going on in the arenasincluding unlockable data. There isn't any information about weapons as the current approach is just to let the size and honor cost of the weapons give you a good sense of what the weapons are capable of. It leaves some room for discoverability. Perhaps another addition to the UFA Databank with weapon information would help ...
i feel like this game could have been so much better... I do not like this game very much, prefer Revolt (but that has nothing to do with this). The game speed and overall feel of this game for me is jerky and not very good. Just my opinion, the graphics and music are beautiful though.
The controls don't feel too smooth either. They really should have looked into how the controls of other iOS dual sticks function. The camera is terribly jerky at the moment. Yes, you can dumb down the graphics to increase performance, but if I'm using the most recent device..what device is supposed to be able to run the game without camera jerks and framerate breaks?
I'm still deciding whether or not to get this game. I really enjoy the DDS genre, but if this is similar (or worse) than Revolt, then I don't want it (got it when it was free and took it off my phone pretty quickly). It seems like a lot of people are having issues with the game being jerky. Hell, even the trailer looked jerky, which is never a good sign. Maybe I'll wait for an AppSpy gameplay review and then I'll decide.
Urk, I don't like it. The level I played was hard to see and the game just didn't feel good. If you're thinking about Revolt or this, there's a third option in RobotNGun which I quite like.
Dual stick controls are interesting. Played tons of Robokill yesterday for the first time in a while following the most recent update, and at first it was a tad awkward because I was playing Age of Zombies a bunch prior. IMO they both have really solid controls, but when you go from game to game there's a bit of an adjustment to be made. (Think of how sensitive and quick the Bug Panic controls are, for example.) Long story short, I'm probably going to pick this up to give it a go because I can't get enough DSS and have been eyeing it for a while... Hopefully the controls work well for me... if not, that's the sort of thing that should be able to be patched with an update. Even so, good virtual controls are so crucial for a DSS on iOS, so sloppy execution is always a bummer to see. That said, need to hop over to iTunes to pick it up and put my wondering mind to rest.
I'm finding that a lot of issues people are having are related to the dynamic camera, some performance issues (resolved in an upcoming update), and how people play. I've seen some people tap the fire button instead of hold it down and it can jump the camera around a bit. That will be fixed in update 1.1 (2-3 weeks). Some initial stutter also is an annoyance for people but that will be gone in the impending update (1.01) along with some needed crash fixes. I'll post what's coming up in the updates in a few minutes. Most people I talk to have really enjoyed it. Granted the subject matter ain't for everyone but if you like Sci-Fi stuff (like myself), it can be a bit of fun.
Just getting started ... I thought I'd post an update of what's coming in the immediate future and the near future. There is an update with Chillingo right now that should address most the performance issues and crashes people have had. That should be submitted to Apple any day now. Included in that update is a new level called Penthouse where you can blast bad guys surrounded by a little modern flare. Quite a bit more content and refinements are coming in the main update (1.1). Those changes include 4 new playable characters, new weapon upgrades, deployable turrets, new game modes and more performance optimizations and enhancements. Any suggested updates or wish list features will be considered and could make it into a build so post them if you got them.
