Don't know from where I got this crazy idea to try out WoW for the first time but, is it worth it? There's a 10-day free trial (and a 10GB download); is it as addictive as 'they' say?
Never played it myself but people seem to compare order and chaos to it which I have played and didn't really like. Might be worth giving that a shot just to see if you like the genre but as to your question 10gb is huge unless your on a really fast connection. I'd actually consider buying the disks rather than downloading something that size.
Short answer, yes it is as addictive as they say. I've gotten people hooked on that game that practically HATED video games. I managed to quit before the first expansion came out, simply because I had a hard time controlling my play time. LOL Just finally got my life back together. Now I play Order & Chaos which is a very nice watered down version of the game.
10-day trial? It used to be a month. Sounds like people were getting bored after a couple of weeks and dropping out without committing to a subscription. Initially it seems quite fun, but you quickly realize the game focuses majorly around repetition and the only way you'll get any real enjoyment out of it is by playing with friends or a clan. The fact the players are essentially split in half creates a lot of confusion for people, level 1-69 players play the game in a totally different way to level 70 players, it's almost like a completely new game once you reach the top levels and start focusing on PvP and raids instead of general questing and levelling. Given the enjoyment to time committment ratio, I'd say it's not worth it. You can have fun on there but you'll quickly lose days from your life on that thing and in the end you could be playing other stuff and having just as much of a good time.
I've/I'll never touch this game. If you want to lose your social life, go for it. I've seen too much of my friends becoming zombies by playing this game.
A few years behind here... But yes, I agree that being sub-max level is a completely different game than the stuff available at max level. Whether or not it's "worth" playing is going to be dependent on the person. Obviously, there are millions out there that think it is, while there are plenty of people who will never understand why anyone plays MMOs. And while you do hear tons of stories about how some people's lives become wasted due to WoW, there are also plenty of people who just play normally. You'll never hear those stories, though, as it'd be pretty boring. "My friend just got into WoW and has a lot of fun playing a couple hours/week."
I haven't played since 60 was the cap, 70 was the only increase I heard of It's surprising how little an impact WoW makes on the gaming media anymore, if you're not into it you won't really hear about it.
While I don't play it anymore, I still keep on to of some of the things. Believe the level cap is now 85. I managed to juggle relationships, bands, and school just fine while playing it. It was just getting to the point where I was only getting like 2 hours of sleep a day and would crash or ditch school just to sleep lol.
Pretty much sums up the problem that all MMORPG's have imo. If you get a chance to play WoW give it a go, it's beautiful and immersive but for reasons stated above and the fact that its starting to get noticeably dated, it's not really worth wasting your money on month after month. ...all that being said I will probably still give Guild Wars 2 a go.
Sigh... less than 2 days in, and i'm hooked onto leveling this stupid Level 12 Druid. That too, having solo'd all this while since the trial version has restrictions on messaging and invites. More so than the actual game play, it's the world that's drawing me in. My first ride between cities on the hippograph had my jaw on the floor; the overall Elven world, the colors, the characters, settings.... I love it all. But for the sake of my married life, i'm not going to buy the full version, nor extend the free trial. ........................... .............
Eh I tried the trial, and didn't really understand what the big deal was. It's true it's getting more and more dated. I'll probably buy/subscribe to Blade and Soul when it comes out. I love MMOs, but WoW never really interested me.
WoW is just really accessible and easy to play, if you get into it there's a really good storyline to everything in the world and the way that you actually feel like your character is where he's supposed to be as opposed to just being sorrounded by polygonal models of what things look like is an impressive feat by blizzard. Anyway it's not some ppl's cup of tea cause it's too dumbed down and blizzard's style is an acquired taste i guess (everything is really bright and exaggerated).
