Correct. Oh, and thanks. At least one person who is able to recognize sarcasm. (Oops, sorry, make it two persons with starjimstar).
Well there is a good chance snipers could actually work so I took it seriously, it would either stop the rioting in it's tracks or make it much worse it's actually tricky to call. Couldn't see the British Government doing it though if it failed it would backfire on them worse than Iraq did.
A BBC reporter went to the court hearing of a number of people arrested in the riots. A lot of them had jobs including a graphic designer and a soldier. Most of the rioting is opportunistic looting. The original message (fair or not) is drowned out. I have lived very close to where some of the riots have happened do to moving around the country to work at various game developers, and have friends witnessing it happening around them. It all sounds very scary.
Think of all the arson that could have been prevented if only the UK had a bit more American ingenuity!
I'm sure your naieve and childish spouting would have a different tone if your livelihood was burnt to the ground because some bored kids decided it'd be a laugh to set it on fire. You are right in one regard though. These people are the utter dregs of society and I'd vote for hanging the lot. Respect? In my day you had to earn it.
+1 I'm so ####ING tired of hearing about the rights of the criminals and that being bored is a reason to cause billions of pounds worth of damage to what other people worked hard for. What about the honest hardworking folk get a break for a change?
The riot is caused by one civilian getting shot by a police. Most of them however, just want to loot stores and cause havoc.
Not really. You might find some idiots claiming that's the reason, but people sadly get shot by police from time to time but this is new. I saw one guy in the middle of it saying it was because the government doesn't provide them anything to do. Nothing new there either - when I was that age and had no money, I got my folks to buy me a second hand computer for christmas and I taught myself to program. Most of these knobheads will have cellphones and playstations. That I paid for.
The world didn't "come to" this. A lot of it has always been terrible. Most of us are just fortunate enough to be born in the right place with the right opportunities. God help those that weren't. Now, as is custom with us Americans, I'm going to drive over to McDonalds, get me a Big Mac, large fries, and a diet coke, watch Jersey Shore, and burn any and all books while smearing war paint on my face and thumping my chest with my fists, expressing dominance over my fragile little eco-system.
The thing that really gets me about the rioting is that it has no clear message behind it. I've heard a few interviews with people rioting and they all spout meaningless waffle that basically ends up with them saying that the reason that they're rioting is that they want free stuff. It doesn't reflect well on our society that some people feel so unappreciated that they feel no guilt at such meaningless crime, but I still find it hard to sympathise with the rioters. I just hope that the trouble's beginning to die down.
What angers me the most is that they think it's OK doing what they're doing. They try and justify their actions with some mediocre reason like the credit crunch (which btw they are not helping with one bit) or that because everyone else is doing it, it's fine for them to join in the looting. Amongst the chaos, they're not going to be caught stealing one mobile phone, right? It makes me sick. Some of them really need a reality check, a big reality check. Edit: Thankfully the riots seem to have died down and about 1000 or so people have been caught but many, many have got off scott free.
Have to say despite there usually being half a dozen riots here each year the only time I know of anything actually being looted was a sports shop and that time they simply stole the golf balls to throw at the police. I'm not sure why looting seems so common everywhere else I guess we do have some form of twisted morals over here.
Business owners aren't guilt free either-- how else are you supposed to feel when people make a living off of taking advantage of your circumstances? Links very related: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/food-deserts-depriving-towns-of-fresh-fruit-and-vegetables-764804.html http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/may/19/london-poverty These people have spent decades (the last major riot was 1992, and no one changed anything then) protesting and trying to get the government to make changes for them, and they've been ignored every time. Of course it's not okay to destroy things and hurt other people, but it's also not okay to ignore these problems. It's easy to call these people criminals or hooligans who are stealing unnecessary things when you already have said things.
The thing that annoys me the most is that this all started from a peaceful protest about a guy that was shot and killed. However, the circumstances of the man's death is unknown still - so the protest shouldn't have even happened anyway! Who would protest over something they know nothing about!?
This isn't even about that any more. Young people are just taking advantage of the situation and using it as an opportunity to loot people.
