Man I know people love to rant to the death about online requirements, but just realize we're in the absolute extreme minority here. Most people play games on their iPhones, have cellular plans, and are just always online. The game pinging their servers once in a while to most people who play this game will never, ever be an issue, and they'll likely never know or care that it's doing it. Don't expect it to change based on a few angry posts, and don't expect them to see any blip in sales because of it. There's tons of other great games that came out this week with no online requirements, check those out instead. I promise your day will be better.
I couldn't give a fig about the online req... I'm waiting to see the hype balloon deflate as it inevitably does with over-wrought games that have timers and other red flag gimmicks. There's way too many games released on the ios platform to be wasting 10 bucks everytime a few forum shills rave about them. I'll check back in a week.
I was one of the people who posted here saying always online simply blocks me from getting the game and also mentioned that this forum thread could have the same impact as Panthera Frontier's, if the devs give a rat's tail about the community (which apparently they don't, otherwise they would probably be here posting, like so many). I am glad I did not get on this "bandwagon". For people who think "this model" is the future of the war against piracy, I must disagree. Look at Ubisoft, everyone knows they are "well-protected" and I don't think AC for IOS has an always online requirement. This was the reason I did not buy Diablo 3 for PC (but boght it for Xbox360). If I buy a "game" (be it digital or physical) I own it and I don't want people telling me "now you can play" "oh but now, nope sorry, you cannot because: a) our server crashed and will be in maintenance for x hours / b) our company just went bankrupt and so our server just went poof (I play my SNES games on my SNES!!! do not give me crap about "oh I have so many games I cannot play because now they are not supported" / c) I do not have mobile Internet or I simply do not want to waste my crappy mobile data on your crappy server". It is funny that some of the people saying "they (the devs) can do whatever they want, it is their game" are also the people complaining that "X-com is not being updated for IOS 11 and the dev should be penalized for that". Well I bought X-com, it is, from what I can see of videos, much better than this game (and most likely worth more the 10$ than this game), however, I understand that it won't go to IOS11. I do not bitch and moan about that (though I am sad), because updating to IOS 11 will be MY CHOICE. Here the choice given is buy or not buy, so I don't buy. and I agree with a previous user: I am also against piracy (except in very specific situations like seeing tv shows online that I will never get here in my country), but regardless of this being an anti-piracy or not, I "hope" it flops (not really because I don't wish bad stuff on anyone, but you get the idea) so devs understand this is not the model to follow.
Disgusting. Whether you're just trying to make a point or not, it's this kind of attitude that's driven away so many developers from the forum. This is why we can't have nice things.
lol lol, thank you, especially the part you did not read what I wrote between brackets. most devs do not come here because they do not give a rat's tail about the community's opinion, unlike others that cherish them, not because of "contrary opinions". Once again look at Panthera Frontier's dev. They came here, everyone was bashing them, they took advantage of the feedback and improved the game...
You've been here a year. I've dedicated 7 years of my life to keeping this forum in tip-top condition (well, my main account has). You have absolutely no idea how bustling these forums were with dev interaction back in the day. Things have changed SO much since then and I'm sure Eli and Jared would tell you the same. Just because one developer is willing to put up with verbal beatings from mobs of pissed off people, it doesn't mean everyone else is willing to.
So people complaining about something (online requirements here) are again the idiots of (once upon a time great) TA, and they are dumped again in a sub-thread, just because some self-centered guy(s) has the power to do it. I have an iPad Pro 9.7 wifi only, I purchased this game specifically for my vacation starting tomorrow, I've read some posts on the first page here on TA, nothing about internet requirements there nor in description (unless it was small written somewhere and I've missed it), and I've purchased the game. No response for a refound, no budget for buying anything else for my few days internet-free escape, I mean it's not such a big deal, but there was a time when TouchArcade was more than this let's-impose--the-world-our-own-view-about-how-people-should-behave-here.. TA isn't trustable for me anymore; I can't trust you to purchase a game solely reading the comments (unless I'd have the time to search all the pages to see if you guys gone turbo again) since you hide all the negativity just because you don't like the bad opinions about games you love unconditionally. Maybe you guys are leaving in a "first" tier country, you're better than the vast majority of us, you don't believe there are people not having smartphones (I only have this iPad wifi only and a "normal" phone) so you decided how the rest of us should think and behave? I'm so tired to see the same patronizing replays from TA staff, same "angry is the primal reaction of the internet", and this dumping of these bad points of view IMHO shows the worst in you. I'm not a rich guy, I don't have internet on-the-go, and when I'm buying something I'm thinking 3 times before doing it. I'm going to miss your "early access" stuff (which is great! You really do a fun and great job, and I wish you the best), but I don't like the road TA is taken by some time now, so I'm going to leave this amazing community for good. Wish you all the best (again), especially to those "taking the plug" and purchasing (many times expensive) games so others, poor players all over the world as myself, to purchase the best AppStore has to offer, week after week. Game on, and have fun!
The App Store description for the game literally starts with "Please read the notes below before purchasing Egglia: Legend of the Redcap", and in those notes it asks you to read, "The game requires a data connection to play". I understand you have a moderation issue and this might just be your vehicle for addressing it, but this was an own-goal on your part. If you can read a TA thread you can surely read an App Store description, especially when the first sentence of said description asks you to. On top of that, if you read TA as faithfully as you claim, you must have seen Jared's story posted about the game's release, titled "Egglia: Legend of the Redcap Launches as a Fully Premium, No IAP Game but it Still Requires a Persistent Online Connection". I don't know. I sympathize with your situation but it looks like you stubbed your toe and are looking for a cat to kick.
The online connection in this single player game affects the ability to play as much as an internet connection affects the ability to get on a forum and point out how that argument does not work... In either case it's still an internet connection attached to the subject. It is not possible that it works all the time, even when it is supposed to work. Errors, dead zones, a wifi-only device in a wifi-less area or vehicle... So considering we're talking about a single player game, it should be designed to work at any time (like it's supposed to) without an arbitrary restriction built in. A restriction which is also another thing that can break the game... That does not mean it's okay that they built in another way for the game to break. Problems existing does not make another problem okay. And this type of thing breaks with no warning, and not even a way to keep a functional device/update around to still play it. The server is gone; game over. That makes this a good reason that people avoid games that do this particular thing.
What I usually do when I found a game I potentially like and may purchase: - READ for the game description on the store. - SEARCH for reviews, articles or discussions regarding the game. - WATCH gameplay video. then if I am okay with the game and like it enough I might pull the trigger and buy it. Else: - I WAIT for sale if the game piques my interest but I don't see myself playing it now due to some circumstances (i.e backlog, incomplete game, etc). - LEAVE the game completely and put it out of my mind. I don't find harassing the developer for features they never intend to include in the first place worth my time. If I am so butthurt about a game even before I purchase it, why should I pay it any attention? Hell, why am I getting annoyed with games I never play, let alone have???? *head explodes* But hey, it's just my opinion
For anyone who is curious here's the official response from the dev about the online requirement: Pretty much the noncommittal answer I was expecting.
Well Since this was the dev's answer in a "we don't care about naysayers, though they do exist, but we are thrilled to see so many (not lol) people play our game" attitude, I can rest my curiosity on this and save me 10 euros (which i will use to buy much better games like strike team hydra which are not net-nazis). And since this is on android, heck maybe it will show up "free", thus giving strength to all the people opposing piracy (which nowadays happens more because devs charge too much or because gamers wants "demos")
I was on the fence about buying as I still have a deep backlog of games to play through with my nonexistent free time. But online only is a definite turn off. I loved Guardians of the Galaxy: TUW but the game required an online check in with each startup. Once support was cut that was that. GotG:TUW definitely left a bad taste in my mouth for online requirements.
Your loss. This is one of the most charming and amazingly polished RPGs released in a while. People don't want to buy it cause it's online but they have time to come online and complain.
