Does this game have an overland map/story (or.. I guess underworld map), or does it progress from battle to battle without any "down time"? I'm a big fan of the RPG/story trappings in unlikely genres (didn't click with Bookworm but absolutely loved Bookworm Adventures, wasn't big on Bejeweled but loved Puzzle Quest, etc.) and I was curious if this game had a story mode/something similar.
Only has an Intro story which is pulled at random from a big database. Then the whole matching part is the whole gameplay as each skull represents 1 enemy and bosses are specially colored or has a special icon to represent it. For me, basically, each move you make is 1 square in a board game. Where in matching a set of, let's say, potions on the current turn then next turn 3 enemies "dropped in and saw you." Give it a try as there is a lite version. Im sure you wont be disappointed with the gameplay and RPG mechanics, story-enriched or not.
played the hell out of this game, this is my "go to" game when I have pockets of time. Glad to see it's getting love
This game really is nothing like Puzzle Quest. Dungeon Raid is a Match 3+ game first and foremost, just it uses RPG elements to power-up your weapons/armor/magic as you make more and more matches. It's rougelike in its mechanics since when you die, game over and you lose all your upgrades. The paid version does have some progression since you can unlock various classes each with their own strengths/weaknesses/magic, but it's pure chance by finding trophies in game (this randomness is my biggest gripe with the game). As mentioned, try the free version first since the paid version is basically the same core game (minus ads, add the aforementioned classes, and add two variation modes). It doesn't sound like Dungeon Raid is what you are looking for, but you may find you like it anyways. I know I'm a big fan.
I've had the lite version for ages and this game rocks! Do progress higher, you do have to look at the consequences on the board of what areas your move will clear and how things will drop. Higher level enemies on the board that you can't attack will spell your doom!!! Adjustable difficulty as well.
I'm pretty sure the dev said it is based on killing X number of bosses but I don't think it even matters as which class. Like say the next level-up occurs after you kill another 200 bosses between multiple sessions, you could kill 180 as a Warrior but if those last 20 bosses were killed as a Priest and the Priest was still not maxed out in its levels, the player will gain a level with their Priest once the 200th boss was killed.
Funny that this game has never won GOTY here after that point. A new post just needs to come out and say it, hah. I don't mind no one answered my question, by this point. I'm still going to keep playing regardless. Great to see this thread come back and just get heaps of praise dumped on it. *Misses dev*
I think the game was released in November or December 2010, so it didn't have enough of an impact to win the GOTY that year since it was so late in the year. At least one of the reviewers here put it on their list for 2011 since the game added the unlocks in early 2011 they said that was good enough for them. Definitely my favorite game on iOS so far.
first post. just wanted to throw a lurker's voice into the mix and say that even at three dollars, the game is a bargain. i use & play a lot of iOS apps, and i'd like to think i have a pretty solid lineup of purchases worthy of face time on my iDevices. dungeon raid is one of those purchases. it is easily my favorite puzzler on iOS, and despite the lack of 'flashy' graphics, the mechanics are there. do yourself a favor and play the lite version, you have nothing to lose. i purchased it at full price after my first lite game and regret nothing. i have no problem plugging a game of this caliber, and i hope there's enough interest to see some choice updates or a new version down the line.
he's alright!! funny that-- it's just gone on sale to celebrate it's release on Android. So no worries, he must be tired, but ok!! and yes, agreed, fav game ever.
Oh, I hope this is a sign of life and now that the Android version is out there door perhaps FireFlame will visit us here again! At least it's comforting to know he's still working on DR even if for non-iOS devices.
Came here to post the exact same thing. I hope we can get some news of an HD universal update. Please fire flame!!!
This is the news I've been checking this forum obsessively for the past 6 months. Great news :- ) I look forward to diving back into this game!
