It's only going to increase general damage multiplier. Are you sure you werent looking at elemental damage?
I'm pretty sure cause I know the elemental damage increases when I upgraded the elemental stat of my weapon. But I upgraded the general strength of my character doesn't affect the general damage of my weapon. I'll try again I'm close to leveling up again and will take snaps to show u.

I'm really reluctantly enjoying exploiting Ogres...there I've said it! Now I feel better and must go back whooping ass!
<3 u too... And furthermore, enjoy your ogre exploiting now, because lets just say on certain challenge missions, certain enemies might not drop certain loot and you might not get a certain ridic XP bonus.. In the first patch =)

I'm level 16 lol and I'm playing the Huntress. I'm having trouble beating it with my towers alone, so it requires me to take care of most enemies. ... Which leaves me getting zerged (overwhelmed) hahaha. I've been playing online to get through most of the campaign levels... but for some reason the game is VERY unstable for me. I'm playing it on the iPad and it crashes every so often.
What kind of weapon do you have, as in have you leveled it up any and how much elemental/ranged damage does it do? Also, what have you been investing your level up points into?
