So a pet project of mine over the last 12 years or so has been compiling a list of things that have happened (or has taken less time) than Duke Nukem Forever's development. Since the game is actually being released next month, I figure I should update it again. http://duke.a-13.net/ If anyone has any interesting factoids they'd like added, drop them in the thread and I'll include them along with immortalizing you in the credits of the site. I'm digging through Wikipedia now trying to find some more fun stuff since the last time I did this a couple years ago. I still kind of can't believe this is finally coming out.
Whoa!! Seems that my favorite series has been inadvertently omitted from your list!! Every Tomb Raider game, except the first (which was released in 1996...)
I honestly cannot wait for this game - and am going to be playing through Duke Nukem 3d ( http://hrp.duke4.net/ ) in preparation for it that being said - I wish they never scrapped the original Quake2 engine project or the Unreal engine project, both those games would have been epic.
I didn't know they were releasing it in March. Last I checked it was May 3rd. To add to your list... -BOTH Starcraft games released -The creation and explosion of Facebook, leading up to a feature film based on its creation story -YouTube Just a few off the top of my head.
May 3rd is the release date. Gearbox doesn't screw around. They know what they're doing. You can definitely count this egg as hatched. However, Duke Nukem is a relic of gaming past, and I'm not sure what kind of legs it will have in the modern gaming world. Just look at Wolfenstein and you'll see what could likely be the end result of Duke Nukem.
It looks like a average-run-of-the-mill shooter with DN humor. Now. I want to play the game that's in the 2001 trailer.
I'm with you on that. Back in 2001 it might just have been insane and unique enough to be a hit, but now it seems like a desperate attempt at old and overused Duke humour that probably doesn't work too well in a modern game, and even if it does, we still need stellar gameplay... and that doesn't just grow on trees.
They haven't, but what was funny then is no longer funny now. The jokes being old doesn't relate to how sophisticated new jokes are, they're just new.
From the way people who've played are describing it, the game is more a throwback than a "run-of-the-mill" shooter. Like Half-Life and other FPSs of the late 90's, it combines action with fairly elaborate puzzles, and it even mixes other kinds of gameplay (racing, platforming, etc.). It's the kind of game that gives you a playable, fully-featured pinball table as a "distraction." People used to the Call of Duty's and Halo's will probably find it a change of pace. Whether that will translate to sales is another issue. Personally, I prefer this kind of shooter.
me too SquareZero - DNF and the new DX game are the only titles I am looking forward to at the moment.
Saw them talking about this on TV once and thought, "Finally. " Then I looked up the trailer and went, "SHHHIIIIIII- I want this." Though I'm pretty sure my old PC won't be able to play it. Dx From what I've read and saw from trailers and previews, the game seems to be a WHOLE lot more interactive. You can use the urinals, pick up your own shit and scribble stuff. But I'm a teeny bit skeptical about some of that. Especially when you're in a strip club... I wonder how interactive it would be.... :O

Much like with Wolfenstein, I don't think this will translate well to modern day. Duke Nukem is a cardboard cut-out cartoon character. We want some depth to the storyline and to the characters. Here, there is nothing but juvenile, lowest-common-denominator torlet/gutter humor. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
