Hate to pile on (I'm going to anyway), but this game still controls horribly, particularly when compared to MC:S. Here's hoping that a better system is being worked on and we'll see some future improvements...

Do the other games that are being referred to that have better controls have the ability/need to free look like Duke does? I haven't played modern combat, but i have played wolf rpg which was said to have much better controls... but the movement/gameplay in wolf rpg is comletely different and shouldn't be compared.

And as i've said before, just use the digital controls. They work well.

I also keep wanting the MC:S controls - so far they seem the best ones for FPS games on the iPhone/iTouch - It'll be interesting to see what controls NGMOCO put in the release of Eliminate.

Duke with MC:S style controls would be awesome.

Quite simply, just laziness.... poor duke franchise :( it's been crapped on ever since duke forever was even a mention.

What ever happened to that quality pipe bombing multiplayer game we knew so well as C:/duke3d

Nippyjun, modern combat is a true, 'free look', fps. Yes, the controls are incredible, and if you are half a fan of fps, than you need to get the game.

Why are people comparing a port of a very old game to one that was made specific to this device in the last year? I think the controls are fine now. They have options to tweak if they don't feel right to you. I didn't have to do much to the analog controls to get them feeling right after the update. It really feels like some people are wanting to not like this for some reason.

Also, all you guys who can't play Duke on your 1st gen touch, my brother got this app for his 3gs when it first came out, and while it wouldn't work on my 1st gen touch at first, the week after it came out it just suddenly appeared after syncing!! Kinda weird huh?

This is a crazy long thread, but didn't someone here figure out a way to get around the 1st gen problem? I'm pretty sure somewhere in the thread someone explains a loophole to get this to work on 1st gen devices.

I hear you sizzla but I am not personally comparing the games, just the control schemes. I realize Duke is a much older game than MC:S, but the developer of this just created the control scheme for Duke on this device just like Gameloft just created the control scheme for MS:C. Therefore I don't think it is unfair to compare the two in that respect. And in my opinion, there is no comparison because the controls of MC:S are so much better than the controls in this game.

I actually was very much looking forward to the update and liking this game. In fact, I moved it up several pages on my home screen before even loading the game up for the first time after the update. I have nothing against it on a personal level. I just think it still hasn't been executed as well as I would have liked (or as well as it deserves).

Does Not Work with Ipod Touch Gen 1 -_-

Though the new 1.1 update states improved controlls, It also states that it is now compatible with Ipod Touch 1 & 2 for OS 2.2 or higher.

I bought it based on this new description so I could finally play it on my 1st gen touch but it will not install!

    "DUKE NUKEM 3D IS HERE!

    New in Version 1.1:

    - New "drag style" analog controls (note that sensitivity is fully adjustable in the options menu)
    - Supports iPod Touch 1 and 2 with 2.2 OS and higher"

I feel somewhat cheated out of $3.00. I hope the company is listening and corrects this.

While I also think the controls are much better, but still not great (I'm hoping like everyone else they're working on MC-like controls)... is anyone else experiencing slowdown in framerates?

I get them every once in a while on my 3gs and I don't know if it has to do with the update or if it's how it always was because I never even attempted playing for more than 2 minutes until the update came.

I haven't played the update yet but the original played pretty smooth on my regular 3g iphone. Couple slow downs when there was a lot of action but overall pretty smooth. I really hope this isn't an issue with the update because it worries me if you're having trouble on a 3GS. Did you reboot before playing the update?

Yes, I'm getting slowdowns, mainly outdoors, like wh nthe little flying police ship explodes.

Controls: This game gives me a headache when I play it. But then I'm not sure I can play an FPS on my iPhone. The auto-centering is the worst part for me. Why did they implement this? I can't shoot and move at the same time. If a Pig lays down to shoot me I'm screwed.

I'm so tempted to try modern Combat, but as I said, I just don't think the genre works for me on this device. Controls are just too frustrating. I give up on Duke, not that it's necessarily horrible, but I personally can't stand playing it.

I've been told that you need to update to 2.2 to play the game on gen 1 touches.

    I'm running 3.0 and it's not syncing on a 1g. So I assume 2.2 isn't gonna work either.

I am on firmware 3.11 w/ a 1st gen touch and it is not working for me. I can not sync through Itunes nor re-purchase on my Ipod touch with getting the "This app requires a mic error".

Ok. Sent some reports like this to the dev. I'll see what happens. Please post if you cannot get a 1 touch to sync.

  20. Any chance they'll update the controls to a proper slide-over model? (The ability for the sticks to retain focus even when you slide outside the stick zone and only lose focus when you lift) The losing focus bit is getting on my nerves.
