oooo that's cold. haven't seen the movie, but heard enough about it. going on the netflix queue. on another topic - hey unconnected jesus! alright, you don't like the game! you've made your damn point! it's your opinion, and you're welcome to it, but what you've done is far past beating a dead horse. you're not going to change anyone elses' minds with your overextended rant on page 26. pulling out your detailed credentials as a basis for your rant is just cocky. hell, as a software developer for *gasp* 10 years, you should know about bugs in software and poor design choices by the marketing department and the "just ship it" mentality of upper management. give it a freakin rest. be glad that a platform exists to bring the great old games back to the younger iphone generation! you've said your piece, now move on, and let the thread return to more useful posts with constructive criticism for George thereby improving this game. ...back on topic... played duke a bit more. i'm getting used to the analog controls. i've cranked down the look speed - up/down to the minimum, left/right a little less than 1/4 inch from the minimum, and i've turned off strafing. i'm doing MUCH better now...tho i still vote for cheat code inclusion
You've got to be kidding. Prey was terrible. The controls were abysmal, the graphics were laughably bad (you have to see it in motion. It looks good in pics, but worse than a GBC game in motion), the story is missing, the enemy AI is non-existent (they hardly move or shoot at all, and even when they do, it is nothing that will be able to do anything damaging to you). Trust me when I say the terrible controls were best part of Prey.
Sorry for the rant minameismud, but Mindfield got my back up a bit suggesting it was pure vitriol and bile, whereas I'm still really struggling to enjoy the damn game. As for upper management "just ship it" attitude, I'm of the opinion that the app store will have a somewhat 'natural selection' type way of weeding these types out, after all, the only way you're going to get any visability on the app store is if you're on top of the unit shifting charts and to get there you've either got to be cheap and/or good... I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't want to see this end up like Prey (try finding that without search in the app store now).
I'm thinking the "just ship it" mentality is getting worse with the app store. Since it's now commonplace to release multiple updates after release some developers seem to think it means they can release an unfinished game and then take their time fixing the parts that hurt the sales. It can work in some cases, no one seems to mind games like Pocket God, Harbor Master and Minigore releasing games with relatively little content, but that's only because they still have replayability and there are no crippling control issues or bugs. Ideally, the games should be finished and the updates should be extras. Planning to release updates isn't an excuse to get something out before it's done.
http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=963 This isn't a new issue, but I can't say I don't agree with you... This has always been a problem IMO...
Completely agree with you MidianGTX, it is getting out of hand. Maybe I should make a game but not finish half of it and release it to the general public saying updates will be coming. Seriously, completely out of hand these days.
Already on my update list and I noticed this as well. Will probably put some number either down by the weapon or under the health bar or something. Yeah, also with "quit" in the pause menu. I don't know why there aren't Y/N confirms on destructive choices, but there will be.
Hi George: Do you think that most of these "must have" fixes will be able to make it to the first update? Are they difficult to implement? Would you mind posting a running list of all the fixes that you plan to do so we have an idea of what may change. Beside controls (which i don't think are that bad) i want music like the original. Thanks.
Hey George, Thanks for being active here and for wanting to improve the game. I was really skeptical of the port, but I must say, aside from the controls, it's pretty spot on. Light on baddies, slowdown from full mirror effect, and censored strippers, but Shit I got duke on my mp3 player!!!
The controls are the #1 issue to me and I'd like that addressed immediately. I'm getting an update later this afternoon to check out, and I expect it'll take a couple of days to nail down, then hopefully submitted. The plan is to basically get out an immediate update to address the analog controls, so we can shave off as many days as possible. We can slip as much into update one as possible, but I'd like to not lose a week due to doing too much, too soon, as every day the controls aren't addressed, people get angry. Will definitely be posting a list and road map of feature changes per version and my intent is to have at least two fairly immediate updates, the first one being analog controls + a few minor things, and the second one addressing design things like ammo counters on screen, but still coming in days vs weeks, hopefully.
Sorry if this has been answered (I went through a bunch of the pages to see but not all of them) but iwas a reason ever given why it doesn't work on a 1G Touch? On release, I tried it and got the the microphone reason but that can't be it. But it works on the pre-3GS iPhones, doesn't it? Don't they have the same specs as the 1G Touch?
Not quite... the 1st gen iPod Touch does not have bluetooth either and runs at only 333Mhz. The original 2G and the 3G iPhones are 400Mhz. 2nd gen iPod Touch is 533Mhz. 3GS iPhone is 600Mhz. So it could be some residual code in place for future bluetooth local multiplayer, or simply the fact that the 1st generation iPod Touch is just too slow and they didn't want you to feel like you're playing a slide show
In CR big bang! In Czech Republic it's big hit! Already number one in top paid apps! I bought it and controls are awesome! Playing it like with keyboard almost! Also posted review on iphonetips.cz ;-) Will be there after a moment ;-)
I didn't mean to suggest it was pure vitriol, only that it seemed out of proportion with the actual problem, much like several other posts here condemning the entire game to the deepest pits of hell just because the controls are dodgy, especially when George himself apologized and said he was on the case and is fully aware of what a dog the controls are in their present form. I'm fighting the controls too, but they can be rendered passable if not nearly ideal by adjusting sensitivity, and I can live with that until the update arrives. Been a problem for a long time unfortunately, and will probably continue to be. It's much worse than the PC scene too because there you just end up with bug fix patches and whatnot, but still relatively complete games, whereas on the iPhone you've got developers releasing games in sort of episodic updates, doling out levels and features piece by piece. Part of me thinks it's just a "Get it out there and start making money ASAP" mentality, but I'm certain there's a great deal of system gaming in there too -- updates pushing apps back to the top of the pile and such for added visibility. I don't think it will. Prey had more issues than just the controls, and none of them ever got resolved because nobody involved in the project bothered to get active in the community. Having George here is a much different situation altogether, and I'm confident we'll see plenty of action taken to improve the experience, starting with the controls.
