Emulating/= porting,ps2 was released 13 years back and 5s was released about 7-8,months back with the promise of console quality graphics abd whatnot. This gane should run at 60fps with a higher res to boot.Especially for 20$ where I can get tearaway on vita and gta 4 on my pc currently. It should look and run vetter the original,If I had ti put up with lag then I would buy a 100$ android device not a 850$ iphone,You gotta lift your standards a little bit mate. It's an epic fail when you like look at what the 'underpowered' vita can do.

Also a 120$ 3ds can run snake eater at 2 times the original res then why can't my 850$ phone,I could have got an android if my only purpose was to make calls and texts,A Nokia 1200 can do that.

Emulating and porting are completely different things a high end pc is required to emulate ps2 games not even a ps3 can do that,For that money I expected a premium quality reworked port of ps2 version not a laggy low res stuttering one we have now.Seriously people why did you buy an iphone the first place if it was to make calls and text messages.I'm honestly shocked here.

It's like I got a gtx titan to play angry birds on it.I guess the devs know about this attitude they can release it running at 10fps and people will still buy it,You have to be kidding me.Persona 4 golden and snake eater on vita is how you do ports not dq8 on ios.

I don't want to get into too much with you since I agree in as much as I think this port could be better, but:

    - while the English version has yet to be updated, the Japanese version received many updates leading up to the English release, all of which were included in the English version. Some of those updates improved performance, so they have done some work towards getting it running better.

    - it's important to remember that the original programming team for this game was not available to Square Enix for this version, and code documentation in the Japanese game industry is pretty poor. Not that the customer should care about such things, but I think ascribing things to "lazy devs" is bad form.

    - I think it's odd you bring up Snake Eater 3D in the context of your complaints about DQ8. Snake Eater 3D ran at 400 x 240, as compared to the PS2 version's 640 x 480, though obviously with the 3D on it was rendering 800 x 240. Hardly double in either case. In addition to the resolution drop, every model in the game had the number of polygons dramatically reduced, and in the end, it still had serious framerate problems, running at a very unstable 25 fps most of the time, but dipping as low as 10 fps during a couple of boss fights. It's kind of a terrible port, and infamously so, and it was priced a lot higher than $20 when it came out.

I hope DQ8 sees further improvements, however. I'm certainly not giving up on it after a few weeks of silence, especially considering the small team assigned to this has certainly been working on the DQ2 release for Japan and, I hope, English versions of DQ1/2/4 iOS. At any rate, I don't think this is a garbage port or unplayable by any means. It's quite good, but it should be a little better, so let's hope they can eventually make everyone happy. If not, well, you'll always have your PS2 version, right?

Well I finally got around to play it on a friend's 5s and all I can say is that it's a terrible port the controls work nicely but even the menus lag,the game runs consistently at at an unplayble framerate so much so that I got a litlle strain in my eyes. It's also running at the same res as the ps2 version,it's quite frankly worse than xcom is.Even swiping around the screen is laggy and unplayable.

for 20$ I expected better,There's certainly no hope for improvement it's been months now and if they haven't fixed the game they never will. It's a classic example of a money grab you release an old ps2 game for 20$ over that the voice acting has been cutoff the game runs at 10-15fps all the time.Had this been on the vita I'm sure it would have been blasted like the GOW collection. But since majority are casual gamers they are 'happy' with it,not that is a bad thing but it certainly leaves people like me frustrated.

there are bad ports and there is DQ8 it feels like a work of an amateur modder who was given a bare evening to port the whole thing.Unprofessional and unacceptable had this been on vita or 3ds it would have been blasted by everyone like the GOW collection.I've played some poor ports most notable ptd edition Dark souls but this game takes the cake. The atmosphere is missing without any dialog the constant stutter and low framerate and the lower res make it one of the worst ports ever.I'm glad I didn't spend an penny on this one,Once they learn how to put effort and time in their ports I'll think about giving them my money.
I can get SA,kotor and limbo for less than 20$ all of them run pretty much perfectly that's how ports are done.

Code documentation is alot better in the japanese gaming industry compared to the western devs,It's a matter of putting effort and time in the port both of which are absent. If a whole year is not enough then nothing is,We will be having the same frame rate 6 months from now. There's no point defending such things they should have planned the port before the release you don't release a broken game just because the 'original team was unavailable' it's lazy and unprofessional,If you can't optimise it then don't release it.It was released in the japanese appstore in december that is 8 months ago add to that another lousy evening they took for this port and it's still doesn't run smoothly on the most popular phone in the world.

P.S They've severly downgraded the graphics I'm playing on my ps2 and several effects are nowhere to be seen most notably the dynamic shadows. Also the framerate on ps2 is atleast twice as much as that on 5s,great port indeed.

Well, it is quite a matter of opinion and expectations. My opinion is that this is my favorite game on my phone right now. And my expectations, even if they're too low in your opinion, have contributed to me enjoying every second I've been playing. So, I'm bummed that not everyone can enjoy it and have as much fun as I'm having. But then again, expectations can make or break a lot in this world.

Well, I'm happy you've reached your conclusion about whether or not this app is for you, goodboyback. Have a great summer!

Off topic, but here it's what states in the app description for Chrono Trigger:

"The following bugs have been addressed:
    - Graphics issues occurring on iPhone5S"

I didn't test it out yet because I've started playing this one, but I'm happy they did fix it. I started my CT game on my old iPhone 4 but it was a crash fest, and when I bought my 5s i was disappointed that it was broken on it.

Back on topic. Is the framerate (DQ8) perfect? No. Does it make this game unplayable? No. It's a bit weird at first, but thing's go smoothly, only not at ermahgerd 60fps.
I wish more SE games supported portrait mode. It works wonders for a phone.

On a side note, I'm happy that SE is embracing iCloud. It's good to have a safe and quick way to backup and transfer saves. And for those who lose all hope, don't forget that update for FFT which revamped sprites and iCloud support that came out of nowhere. You never know.

Still enjoying and loving this game, not a problem with frames or anything but I play the game to have fun not to find problems in it

Yeah, I started Chrono Trigger on my iPhone 4 too. Got a long way into it and then switched to a 5S and transferred my save. But the graphical issues weren't enjoyable so I put it on hold too. I'll be completely satisfied if they fixed Crono's eyes. They freaked me out! But I hope we don't have to play it stretched for the iphone 5 screen. I'm happy playing it in the correct aspect ratio! Thanks for the details.

And I agree about DQ8. Man, I love portrait mode. Probably a huge reason I played FF:ATB for so long even though it was just a swiping game.

I want to love this game but for me the camera is simply unusable, I'm forever fighting with it. So since doing the first waterfall dungeon weeks ago, I've not loaded it once as it's just a pain to play. Which is a huge shame as I can see what a gem the game is.

A friend of mine also bought this after my recommendation and found the camera control was too annoying too. The strange thing is, he got a £13.99 refund from the App Store but still has it installed on his machine! (Which kind of ticks me off as he's now got it for free and I paid for it and don't play it)

Each to his own mate,If it were 5-6$ I wouldn't fret over it buy not only is it 20$ it's one of my all time favorite games.I hate it when I think of 'what if' and in this case I think it's entirely justified. It's simply put 'the' worst port I've ever played 20fps,low res, missing shader effects from ps2 version and over that 20$ price tag, It's crap in every way and I feel embarrassed for being a fan of this game and level 5.My expectations weren't anything fancy a straight 30fps port would have done the trick but this port is imo an abomination it's offensive to the fans/gamers and a work of amateur programming at best, had there been a ps2 emulator I do think it woud run roughly the same way on that,it's that bad and I'll never forgive SE for it.:mad

@Shaun,Had I not played it would have been better actually the port has ruined my mood for good but thanks.

To each his own. I'm 40+ hours in and loving it. $20 is incredibly reasonable for a game with this amount of content and gameplay time. Who knows how much money I've spent on $1-$5 games that I play for 30min and delete a month later.

As far as visuals I have had zero problem with stuttering or framerate that I could see with the naked eye. Certainly nothing that takes away from the game. It looks 100 times better than trying to play it on my backwards compatible PS3 on a 57" TV. Camera takes a little getting used to and I don't think if want to play it on an iPad, but on the iphone I love the controls.

This was the release I as waiting for from SE and I wasn't disappointed.

It's far from unplayable. Even on my first gen mini I've had a couple 3 to 4 hours sessions that left me feeling good about my purchase. I hope the work on a better framerate but I'm guessing at this point they've done all they can to squeeze performance out of if. This isn't infinity blade where it's on rails with 2 characters on screen at a time. It's a gorgeous open world, much nicer and more detailed than most on the App Store, and it's a port at that. I honestly don't think the GTA ports are much better. Every single one has lag and framerate issues. I bought this just to show support for my favorite franchise

Imo They haven't optimised crap,Gta SA atleast runs at a stable 30fps with real time reflections and dynamic shadows, with a higher res on the very same device.Check out graphics thread if you don't believe me benchmarks certainly show how far the iphone 5s is.I'd believe you if I wouldn't have playee SA myself it's not the device it's fault on the devs part. They've evn downgraded the visuals, not good at all.

I'm remember reading that Square has some of the worst game documentations, one of the reasons why they have never done a Final Fantasy VII HD remake was because of lost coding. I do remember reason that Final Fantasy X had documentation issues where it made it difficult for programmers to port it to newer devices (PS Vita).

That's their problem entirely it means they knew it would be a crap port but still decided that it's name would be enough to carry the title.Charging 20$ for an ugly downgraded port is ripping customers off.Atleast the vita version looks and runs better than the ps2 one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcrZodHJP6w

I bet they would release a 10fps port of ffx on ios simply because it's flooded with casual gamers who'll buy "anything",this port is the perfect example of why mobile gaming will never be taken seriously and we'll be still playing angry birds 9 on our 800$ paperweights. This crap port would have got string of 3's and 4's had this been on the vita even at the same price just look at the reviews for borderlands with all dlc's got on the vita and that's a 'ps3' port still manages to run it better than this crap.If mobile gamers want to be taken seriously then they need to stop buying every crap port released otherwise all you'll get are these.

I insta-bought this for my iPad 3 the moment it was released, but never played it. That's because I saw that it had also come out for Android, and have been unable to put it down on my Note 2. I can't speak for iOS framerate but it has been flawless for me, and the simple control execution is absolutely brilliant. I just swivel in the direction I want and tap the bottom bar, never 'pan' with it.

I thought I had over ground to a ridiculous degree until I got the boat, and suddenly found my party being wiped. I have spent about 5 days straight on the little island with the Holy Church on it, just running in a tight circle and auto healing about every third battle until I am exhausted of MP and zooming to Riverside Chapel for a dirt cheap snooze and save.

I don't even know what it is about this game that is so freakishly addictive, but if nothing else the tongue in cheek parody in the monsters/attacks is worth it all by itself. They must have had quite the English translation team for that PS2 port because the puns and such are bang on, relentlessly.

I do wonder if there is a way to hack/respec my save file, I went with staves for Jessica and while eventually she gets some nice MP saving boosts her attacks are pretty much useless - the whip seemed much more beefy overall.

Now if only we can get a port of FFXII Zodiac edition for our devices... Oh man...

Hope you enjoy it as much as I have! My only other DQ game was the first one here in the states, Dragon Warrior for NES. And it got me hooked on RPGs.

If anything, the FFX port would be pretty smooth since the PS Vita uses the same GPU found on the iPad 3 and it uses ARM architecture. They already did the bulk work, now they just need to make it compatible with iOS. With Metal, I see this more of a reality.
