How's the frame rate on a Mini? And can we expect an update that fixes those issues? Or is everything like set in stone?

How long have you've been playing?

I've played 24 hours on a combination of my mini retina and 5S. The framerate is only noticeably a bit lower when the camera swings round quickly but it's not bothered me at all. I played many hours without considering it an issue and the game is enthralling. I thought I would have a problem with portrait orientation and the controls but I absolutely love them. Took maybe half an hour for them to click but now I wouldn't have them any other way.

Bear in mind that this is my opinion.

Others in the thread who are used to gaming on PC have issues with the framerate as far as I understand.

It doesn't matter if you're used to 30 or 60 FPS as every eye notices frame rate slower than 23 FPS ; I guess you could say that it makes more impacts on eyes of people that are used to very high frame rate as 60 FPS though.
For me personally slower that 23 FPS frame rate is a deal killer because I can't enjoy game properly.

10 hours into it, and I still haven't had any problems on my iPhone 5S. I'm absolutely loving the game, the story, the grind, and the way SE ported it to mobiles. I can understand people wishing they could experience it in landscape on the iPad. However, unlike a review I read, I don't feel like you're missing a lot because you can't see as far left and right. We've just trained our brains to see videos and games in landscape. And since this was presented in landscape originally, I understand others' complaints. But having never played this game before, I'm thoroughly enjoying my first play through on my phone!

One question I have is about attack vs. Actual damage. Why do I only damage monsters 20ish hit points if my attack is rated at 53 for hero? And why is my Yangus only hitting 30ish if his attack is 74? Driving me crazy. Even though I keep leveling up, my attack doesn't seem to change much.

The enemies have a defensive stat too. You can use attacks like helm splitter (I believe?) that lowers an enemies defense.

I believe the attack number is the highest possible value you could inflict on enemies, the normal attack would be around 1/2 to 1/3 the actual value. I've noticed that upgrading the stats for weapons relevant to what the characters are using helps a bit.

I was hoping to get this as I never played it on my ps2 when I had one and it looks really good.

But then I read this review.. http://www.usgamer.net/articles/dragon-quest-viii-ios-review

and now I'm going to hold off at least for a couple of months. The portrait only seems like it could be a killer on an Ipad.

I read that review and the reviewer is a joke. There are at least 3 other reviews that are all 4 or 5 out of 5. The guy made his decision in the first 5 minutes, he said it himself, he wanted to delete it immediately and begrudgingly kept playing for the review having already made up his mind. Never gave it a chance. I guarantee he didn't play more than 1-2 hours.

That's my review of his review.

If I only had an iPad that could actually run this well, I'd still get it. I'd rather play pinball and dart games in portrait. Why not try an RPG that way too? It really works well when you switch controls so joy stick is left or right of center. But with auto run, all you really have to do most of the time is move your finger over the camera angle area.

Ah. Enemy's defense. Makes sense. Thanks for pointing that out!

@Mene if you're worried about the quality of the game then rest assured it's one of the best games of all time and features frequently on many all time lists. If you're worried about the port and price then I think you might wanna wait,Though if framerate and the hefty price are not an issue then you can buy this game without worries, the controls and interface as stated by our fellow posters is pretty good, though don't take my word on it as I haven't played the game yet, check out YouTube videos or 'sanuku' he posts a lot of good gameplAy videos here which you can find in the first few pages of the thread.:)

I don't mind paying a premium price for a game that will last me a nice long time, my main issue was with it being locked to portrait, like that review mentioned, your view feels claustrophobic and would be better in landscape as you could see more and wouldn't feel pinned in. Yeah the framerate is a concern too.

I've added it to my wishlist and I'll go watch some YouTube of it. Thanks for the info.

@Mene,Yeah landscape mode should be an alternative especially for those playing on ipad and minis,I guess you can mail the devs about it and see if they are planning to include it an update in the future.

Portrait mode doesn't bother me as much as the controls do on iPad. Great game, but could be better with "normal" controls (and option for landscape would be ideal)

I've logged hundreds of hours into the PS2 version and I largely agree with the points she makes. This port runs choppily, is not as responsive as the original version (button lag, loading, etc.), and it feels like it's gonna crash at any second's notice.

Now, mind you, these are not necessarily deal breakers, but they have been something I've had to get used to. There had to be a trade off to get such a huge game into mobile, and I guess those issues were that trade off.

If you haven't previously played the game on PS2, then these issues will most likely be easier to ignore. (You might not even notice them). But make no mistake, those issues are there and they are something you should most definitely consider before buying.

If it means anything, I've managed to become used to the way the game plays now, enjoy it on a consistent basis, and have no buyer's remorse. So take that as you will.
