Yeah, I've never played it before. Haven't played a Dragon... game since Dragon Warrior for NES! And since I'm playing a handful of RPG's and have been since my first iPhone, I may only put 10-20 hours on this by the end of the year. Still, though, it looks like an adventure I'd love to immerse myself in for a few years to come! And since my phone can play it, and SE has been so good about porting it with no IAP or internet connection needed, I really want to support them.
Seems a bit expensive for a straight port. A remake I have no problems paying quite a lot for, but this seems a tad excessive. I'm not saying I'm not going to get it outright, but I'm on the fence in any case.
nice review S. M. i wanted to reply on review comment section but it asked me to loggin and an error pop-up ... 'cos i'm already logged in... have this issue for days so, before opening DQ i turned off my device (iphone 5 latest ios) then turned on and start playing for 1-2hours and didn't had no lag, no issues. here are some ss with my phone memory scaned with two diffrent apps after closing the game (1-2h of dq playtime). when i play injustice my phone gets crazy hot and the memory runs out, +70% of memory used(same with TWEWY, around 75%memory used), have no issues neither with injustice or twewy when playing, just wanted to compare some hq graphic games that are memory eater. in almost 2h of play DQ didn't made no issues, no lag, no burning phone. edit: i really like the port so far, it has some v nice music too, and about VA...if they were an optional content to download i probably wouldn't spare hundreds of mb just for the VA. i know some ppl would but idevices have limited space...and every free extra space really counts. i'll probably play dq viii for months becouse don't have the time to put crazy hours per day and i had some "issues" finishing games quicker then i should(skills and/or tons of exp), so i'll enjoy this fine port on the go for the next months. last night i tough MH eng v will hit the store...and today i'm having a legit dragon quest port in my pocket... if you like and know to play JRPGs then you shouldn't miss having DQ VIII in your pocket is not the most expensive game in the store but is one of the best games available on mobile phones
It was probably a lot more than $20 when it first appeared for PS2. And thankfully they didn't just port it and slap it into an emulator. They actually redesigned the controls for mobiles, and changed the view from landscape to portrait for easier control. So, it took a little work. Probably a lot of work that (not being a developer) I have no idea how to do!
Square Enix spent more than a year remastering Final Fantasy X and X-2 into HD, with redone character models, sharpened textures, new effects, new music, and a host of previous Japan-only content. The games cost $20 each. PS2 Classics on PS3 go for about $10-$15. I'm happy to pay $20 for this port of DQ8, but I'm not kidding myself either: in comparison to other titles, either on mobile or otherwise: it's excessive.
This looks right up my street! I'm a little disappointed with no landscape mode but still, it's a classic game. Sadly right now I only have £11 on my App Store account and cannot add any for the foreseeable future, so can't buy it but if it goes on sale in the next couple of months I'll buy it immediately
We're in the same exact boat! I feel I'll end up buying for having a full-on RPG from Squenix that I can play at any time in the future, perhaps put some initial time into today. These are good problems to have though!
For people like me though, who don't have a PS3 (or any console) it feels more justified. But I usually agree, in general, that games on iOS should be cheaper than hardware counterparts for the fact that they can easily become obsolete with new devices and software continuing to release and a lack of support from the developer. It can feel as we're almost leasing games on iOS..
Can anyone tell me if you can skip the combat animations in this port? The random encounter battles got really tedious in the middle of the ps2 version for me.
still can't believe i have a legit port of dq viii on my pocket ... now i'm waiting an eng version of mh too
Wow! Thank you very much, downloading on my iphone amd ipad, iphone for the coffè break in office and ipad at home
Yes it does feel like leasing games when various classics get lost. I was happy when Mission Europa Collectors Edition was finally updated for modern devices. I have to say I'm absolutely loving this game so far as a newcomer to the series. It plays better on my iPhone than my rMini though. The centrally placed d-pad kinds of sucks on a larger device. The benefit of this is that it plays beautifully with one hand on iPhone and the convenience of this means that I may actually finish this in a few years playing in 15 minute chunks on my commute and before I fall asleep! The music is amazing. I keep returning to the Inn just for the music! Lol. Also the dialogue is humorous and the characters are memorable right off the bat because of the dialogue. I'm so looking forward to finding out all of what this has to offer.
You can place the d-pad either left or right if you want. There is a double arrow that moves the pad. It should make things easier
Dragon Quest always is. SE is very protective of the value of DQ mainline games in a way that's different from anything else including their own treatment of FF or Nintendo's treatment of Mario. For example, you can get any of the FF games on Virtual Console and PSN at prices in line or only slightly higher than other games on the services, but none of the DQ games are on there. The closest thing (and by series standards an unreal value) is the on-disc Wii collection of the NES roms of the first three games and the two SNES roms of their remakes. That set sold for 4500 yen, and only for a very limited time. PS2 Classics are typically $10-15, and that's why you will never see DQ8 as a PS2 Classic, just as DQ7 will never be released as a PS1 Classic. This port of DQ8, priced at $20, actually represents the lowest price a DQ mainline game has launched at, and as you know, it's almost half of the price it goes for on the Japanese App Store. None of this changes or excuses the price being high, of course. Just wanted to add some context. This is business as usual for the DQ franchise.
