Recently I left for a month-long vacation. I have my iPhone 3G S with me but I couldnt bring the computer I have all my information backed up on. When I got to my vacation home, I downloaded iTunes to my computer here and synced my iPhone; authorized it to this computer. The only things I synced to iTunes were my applications and I haven't back up anything on this computer.
This morning, I downloaded iOS 4 (took me about 6 minutes). It says currently says "Backing up...". I would rather not interrupt this process so I don't keep it from installing iOS 4 (there isn't even a "cancel" button anyway), so does anyone know how long this backing up will take? I have about 4 movies and 27 30-minute TV episodes, roughly 150 apps, 1000-ish pictures, maybe a dozen videos, and 300 something songs all on a 16 Gig. I have about 13 GB worth of stuff on my iPhone. Can anyone give me an estimate as to how long it will take to back up all that information on a fresh computer?

Wow that sucks :( I'm running on a pretty good connection so I don't think it'll take that long, but I'm giving an estimate of 4 hours. I'm hoping someone with a similar scenario can give me a nice guess...

    Sorry!

Wow... What kind of connection are you running on? That sounds pretty great. Lol. :)
I've done a rule test (yes, I measured the progress bar on my screen), and according to measurement, it's going to take me 5 hours. :( I really hope it doesn't take that long...

    > You are Welcome!
    > The file needed is only 315 mb, it is taking time to backup ur stuff, keep it safe, wipe iPhone, unpack new OS, install it, put ur stuff back
Its not really about the connection.

AGH! I don't want it to wipe my phone! I don't have my pictures, movies, or music on this computer! Just the applications! :( It won't put them back on there after the update, will it? There are lots of things I have on there that I didn't buy on iTunes, so it's not registered on my account. Am I going to lose everything? D=

If you're syncing with a computer that's not the one you synced everything to before, yes, you will lose everything.

*sigh* At least I'll have my apps... I suppose I'll still have Hulu and YouTube to get my entertainment and music fix.

Just a little update for those who haven't made the update yet:
The whole process took me about 30 hours and even though I was backing up from scratch, I didn't lose any of my data. It kept all my music and movies even though they weren't on the new computer I was using. Happy downloading to the rest of you! :)
