Just got a 360 about 4 weeks ago when break started, and I'd love to take it back with me to college. My birthday is the day before I leave to go back, so I thought I'd ask for a personal TV that I could play games on in my dorm. Is 25" a good size? I don't have too much space so I think keeping it under 30" would be a good idea. All the TVs under 30" are all below $300 at BestBuy, which is very affordable. I'd need for it to stand on my desk. 32" looks like a common size too. Would that be small enough for personal use? Also, LED, Plasma, or LCD? I actually don't know much about TVs at all. I'll mostly be playing single-player games (Skyrim xD) on it since my hall has two large TVs in the lounge when people want to play some 8-player Halo matches. I might be playing some 2-player games with my roommate occasionally as well. Thanks for any help and recommendations you guys might have. It'll be easy convincing my parents to get me the TV. The hard part is going to be convincing them to let me take the 360 to college since I'm supposed to be "concentrating on school" during my freshman year, lol.
Best quality would be plasma but plasmas need to be taken care of very well or they will get dead pixels in them easily. I have an LCD and it looks pretty nice but my mom has an LED and OMG it just seems beautiful to me. I think the best for you would be LCD if you only plan on using it for a few years but if you want a T.V that you will keep for a while go for LED. I don't suggest Plasma because of how badly it can get messed up
I don't really want to get into size recommendations since I'm not aware of how much space you have. But as for TV type, I recommend LED. Plasma will give you the best picture but won't be good in the long run. LCDs are more durable but aren't as good (picture quality wise). LEDs offer a nice middle ground, so go with that.
Well for plasmas you have to do this certain thing where lights flash around your tv and stuff. You have to do that like once or twice a day for 15 minutes for a few months, and even after that the picture will get worst after 2-5 years For the other t.v's not much maitinence is needed. Just don't leave it on a single un-moving image too long, and dust it off once in a while
That about 115 more dollars then your looking to spend If you want to stay closer to your budget http://www.samsung.com/us/video/tvs/LN32D403E2DXZA
They actually have quite a few at BestBuy that are about $350. How's this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+32%26%2334%3B+Class+/+LED+/+720p+/+60Hz+/+HDTV/3727126.p?id=1218429292775&skuId=3727126? It has to be from a store my parents can drive to since I don't have much time left at home..so, pretty much BestBuy is the only option close to my house.
That's an ok t.v but I suggest Samsung over Lg. it's up to you though. The difference isn't huge but if you care a lot go with Samsung
Best brand imo is Vizio. This is the tv I have currently in my room, and I frickin love it. Bit pricey tho.... http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-E260VA-Inch-Class-Razor/dp/B004T1YACK/ref=sr_1_5?s=tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1326089837&sr=1-5 EDIT: Another plus side of LED over LCDs and Plasmas is that LED's are a lot thinner and eco-friendly.
I like Samsung myself but LG is probably their best competitor and they both make good LCD panels and I'm by my own admission a little biased as I tend to buy Samsung everything I just find them reliable. LED backlighting is worthwhile but generally just means the panel will be a bit more evenly lit all over at heart it's still a LCD, I do think it helps the colours a little based on my netbook having it. Can't wait to see OLED TV's start to hit in numbers later this year but they will likely be expensive at first but I suspect in the long run they will kill off both lcd and plasma.
Never saw so many empty Samsung and Vizio boxes by a dumpster move in day at my kids' colleges! Probably a good indicator what would be popular at least in a dorm! Remember when you are looking at the size to remember how far away you will be using it. Just like anything the quality changes if you aren't at the recommended viewing distance. Pixelated, blurry, color is off, etc. There is some formula for size that I don't have the link for at the moment but it would be a good idea to make sure you aren't going too big for the size of your room. That will make the games look crappy if you are playing closer than they recommend as optimal. No one wants to spend any amount of money and have it look like crap for what you need it for.
I'd go with Samsung personally. They're becoming one of my favourite companies period. I've never been too keen on LG, but their new Cinema Screen is a thing of beauty. Probably a little out of your price range though
Yeah, I'll probably be playing from 2-3 feet away from the screen in my dorm room. For single-player experiences, I'm wondering if 32" would be too big at that range.
I sit at a desk to do my console gaming, and a 21" monitor is perfect for me. If you're not actually going to be watching any television that's what I'd recommend as a 1920x1080 monitor should come at half the price of a 1080p HDTV.
I guess I'd like to keep the possibility of TV open since there's free cable at the college. I rarely watch TV even at home though. Alright, I think I'll go with a 22" or 26" Samsung then. They're both exactly $300 before tax. Thanks for all your input guys. Now, I just have to let my parents in on the plan. Will let you guys know how it went in a few days.
