Not sure why on the rails makes a game instant fail? Have you played other games of the same nature. More often then not they rock the house. It's also one of those would you like it set up as Prey or Brother in Arms for your moving around nature. I think it's a good design feature to let us enjoy the product more than to have to worry about if the controls will work or not. Sure you guys don't have to play it. Simple as that, but the game still looks to be sweet and very Doom like
Doom is truly the grandfather of all games, let alone first person shooters as we know it today. idsoftware and John Carmack have delivered nothing but AAA titles through out their lengthy career.Since this is essentially a scaled back version of Doom 3, I expect nothing but quality coming from this title and I've never been disappointed.
Well that old arcade rail shooter (can't remember what it was called) was alright, but only because it was a classic arcade game. When a developer brings a new shooting game to the iPhone and tries to disguise the fact that it is a rail shooter and instead makes it look like a fully operating FPS, while undersetimating the capabilities of the iPhone/iPod Touch, well that deserves an instant fail. I will not get this game, in fact I would rather have herpes.
+1 I love rail shooters, my favorite being Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. I also love first person shooters, so I think I will be getting both Doom Classic and Doom Resurrection. Though I must say this game looks very polished and fun. As long as there is some story line or tie in with the original it will be a keeper in my book.
I had a sneaking suspicion it was gonna be on rails. The whole "accelerometer to move and aim" thing led me to that belief. Now it's confirmed. Oh well. For those that want a DOOM FPS, id are still bringing DOOM Classic over. And Wolfenstein RPG. And possibly DOOM RPG. And that last one, btw, had a bunch of folks pissed when it was first announced to be an RPG. Guess what? It's one of the best friggin' RPGs on a mobile. Ever. On rail shooter = fail? No, people who think that = fail. Good on rail shooters rock. And if this one is as good as Eli and the rest state it is, then it'll be a worthy addition to the line up. Finally, let's judge it on what it is rather than what it isn't.
I completely agree with pretty much all of this. When I first saw this thread I thought, "hey, I don't like FPS games in general, and I'm really not a fan of Doom, but based on the screens I might give this a try anyway". I'm actually more sold on it now that I know it's a rail shooter. I'm going to have to try really hard to save some of my iTunes balance so I can get this when it comes out.
Just saw the video, and it looks pretty great. I'll definantly get this one if its around $5. I don't mind if it's on rails as long as it has fun gameplay.
Same here. I want this now.. and I never liked Doom 3 (only watched my brother play and it was lame). I hope this doesn't come out the same time Doom classic does. Off topic question: Is a manhunt like game ever going to come out? I've never experienced it but it was awesome when my brother played the 1st one.
This game has everything set for me. The only thing I'm still on the fence about is controls. Every single FPS game for the iDevice seems to turn out horribly. No one has been able to perfect it yet so Im a little hesitant to buy this one.
I know BIA is not FPS but that works well, with the whole moving and sliding fingers and a virtual pad works well, I think.
Yeah, it did work good. It's a third-person shooter but the controls were alright. It was unresponsive at times though and my fingers would get tired. I'd drag the whole joystick over to one side and he'd just be standing there strafing from side to side.
True, they say it will use accelometer controls for aiming. Many FPS games on the appstore have tried that and failed. I think they should have many options for controls, personally I like to slide my finger on the scree in order to aim and not use the accelometer.
I don't trust the 4-6 hour game experience. This is always a problem, especially with only 8 levels in the game I think this is an exaggeration when it comes to big titles but short game play. Metal Gear is somewhat similar but in one place but that doesn't last very long, can probably finish that in less than one hour and a half. I would still get this but probably wait for reviews, I would expect this to be 2 hours tops, not 4-6 hours. But I could be wrong.
Something you guys upset about it being on rails are not understanding is that this game was originally developed experimenting with several control options. They couldn't find anything that worked how they wanted and, according to Tom (One of the guys behind the game.) there were points where they just debated scrapping the project. It wasn't until they added the rails element to it that it really clicked. This was a calculated design decision, not something they just randomly decided to do. Until you've played it, I wouldn't get too worked up over the rails aspect. It's a pretty fun game, and the graphics engine invokes a lot of "Wow, this is really running on my iPhone?" just like Real Racing. This is exactly why this game is on rails.
I've never seen idsoftware (Carmack) screw up on a spoken about title. I expect it to be what it is. Doom 3 on the iphone. One of the best scalable engines ever. Even if written from the ground up by the fps grandfather's 'standards', it's still a good piece of work.
Hodapp, you've described desperation at not being able to get a game to play well leading to a choice between scrapping it or putting it on rails and you go on to call that a "calculated design decision". Being unable to produce a playable game any other way doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.
I should have been more clear, they seemed concerned that if you had your fingers all over the screen you'd miss out on cool things like headshot effects and some of the other crazy things that happen. It's a really good compromise from playing it, the rails movement seems to be about how you would move anyway, it has a Time Crisis-like cover system, and the tilt to aim thing allows you to see all the action without having your hands obscuring 2/3 of the screen. Hopefully they release a lite version to put some of these concerns to rest. I understand why you're skeptical but the game basically blew me and Arn away when we got a chance to play it.
