Cool cool. I don't know I was able to play Duke pretty easily without the update then even better when it was fixed but I realize I'm the minority on that ;) I agree that it would be nice if iD would be a little more open to updating us. Even their own website is slow on talking points :(

As much as I love the Doom games, I don't really understand the excitement about this game as much as I did with Wolfenstein. The controls are going to be very problematic in this game because of the vertical aiming, and I don't think ID is going to have any sort of autofire built in.

The Doom games are some of my favorite shooters of all time, and I still play them in the form of the Skulltag project, but I just don't think this game will be as good as everyone is hoping.

kmacleod: vertical aiming in doom? only way vertical aiming would work would be if you used a 3rd party gui program made for windows that adds full mouse look etc...

doom has always been horizontal, it auto aims so if a dude is on a ledge and you fire it hits them no matter what as long as your facing the direction of the enemy...

I shouldn't have said vertical aiming (although the game is better if played in a 3rd party OpenGL engine with full mouselook). What I meant was, the fact it has a vertical level design adds a level of complexity that will make control very difficult on the iPhone. While Wolfenstein's control scheme is decent, it is nothing special, and still suffers from the difficulty in simultaneous look-strafe-shoot.

i can see where you are comming from...just remember carmack is the one porting it over , im sure it will be fine...it will control just like wolf3d cept the levels are multi tier i think it should work ok, actually they could add touch kills which would work if you were having problems hitting someone higher up just tap em a few times to fire , could work ;p...just have to wait and see

I don't see the problem. Duke Nukem has (to some degree of success) implemented a working control scheme that many have praised (and I'm inclined to think that - for those others who failed to adapt to the control scheme where even other have succeed, it is because they're physically or mentally unable to, or have hardware problem - ie. older iDevices). Modern Combat : Sandstorm have also implemented a very successful control scheme that seems to be (haven't heard any complaints) universally praise.

Hence, I don't why Doom can't succeed where others, fitting the "problematic" criteria as you listed, have.

The look-strafe-shoot aspect might not be perfect, but the overall control scheme certainly won't be very difficult to use.

what do you think it'll cost? probably around seven to ten dollars right? ( based off steams 9.99 pricetag for it) or cheaper because it's a port and the controls won"t be as easy

I think the base price will be something like $5.99.. with maybe a 48-hour sale of $3.99?

    That's my bet, heh.

I'm absolutely DUMBFOUNDED as to why this isn't out yet. And as was said before, I'm shocked at id's inability to update on the progress since what, June?

it is a bit bizarre. i remember back when the original psp launched somebody managed to port the original doom perfectly to it in a single WEEK in a convenient file you just dropped onto your memory stick. perfect controls, framerate, audio/visuals, and all. no need to download any extra emulators or files.

sure, this might be different with the accelerometer and touch screen, but compare that homebrewer's single week to id's months without any update...

This situation would be ABSOLUTELY fine if id had kept us up to date with development.

    But they haven't.

I'm pretty sure Doom Classic for the iPhone is going to be slightly different than the standard homebrew port of Doom. ;)

it's true, and i made sure to make note of that in the end of my post. but the lack of updates for this long from a company like id is pretty disappointing. then again, isn't john carmack attempting to program it all himself?

That's the way I understand it, it kind of just sounds like a pet project of his.

yeah, rage and doom4 might have a little bit to do with the lack of progression on this one.

Well, Wolf3d was...what, around $1.99? Doom being a step (or few or couple) after that, it would be reasonable to ask for 3.99 or 4.99. 5.99....would be pushing it, but I'd pay that for Doom 2.

    So we're in agreement! haha.

I think the way I remember it being planned, is that the main game would be the original Doom with in-app purchasing for Doom 2 maps and other extras. I can't remember were I read that, but I'm pretty sure that's accurate.
