I prefer 1, not often a fan of games that try to spread themselves too thin with diverse gameplay elements.
I go with #1. Variations in game play and different powers to use. Invisibility Ray Gun, that vaporizes obstacles in front of you. Or a Shrinking weapon that imediately shrinks bad guys to where they're not a threat, just jump over 'em or on 'em. Or a flamethrower to incinerate enemys and obstacles and clear the way! Just a couple ideas.......
I am almost hesitant to say this, because I honestly think that DRWAPS is a top, top example of an endless runner, seriously, like on par with the ones Halfbrick put out...but the potential of #2 is just too great to ignore. I think that making an original, stand out platformer in the more traditional sense is a massive undertaking as well, however. If you guys are really interested in doing it, I would be absurdly interested in buying it, based just on how intrigued I am by the thought alone...
This suggestions sounds wonderful. Not quite sure if there is anything quite like it on the platform. The original is already the titan of endless runners. While an improved sequel certainly would not be redundant (and would surely suck a few dollars from my bank account, the only endless runner except for DRWAPS itself to do so), what you are suggesting here sounds like something far more in-depth, engrossing, engaging, sophisticated, and possibly unique. Together with the original DRWAPS, we'd have access to two very different but still massively fun titles, which, for me, beats playing two still great but similar games.
Option 1 really just barely sounds like an expansion to this game as opposed to a new game. The second option seems to actually convey some sort of new game.
#2: Yes, please! #2 would be awesome. And charge at least $5 for it, please. You guys deserve some money.
^^ Well, at least the money part. This game definitely didn't get the recognition it deserved. Note on the next release: Don't release in the same week as IB2 and COD BO Zombies. Try for GOTW from apple.
Thanks everyone for your comments! Just to make sure that things are clear, we're talking about a completely separated sequel, not expansions. Expansions for DRWAPS will be dealt with independently. If we'd go with 1-, we'd probably introduce deeper variations on gameplay to make it stand apart, for example rope swinging. The game could even have different gameplay depending on level. For instance, driving a small ship in a level, running in the next, rope swinging in another, etc. I agree that although 2- would be a more challenging task to undertake, it would definitely lead to something quite unique and amazing. For now we're intrigued to know more about what DRWAPS fans are most interested to see the franchise develop into, but perhaps both avenues are interesting anyway?
Number two all the way! Why repeat yourself? Take it to another level! You could even combine those two ideas and have variations of gameplay from one level to the next. Some runner, some exploration, some boss fights, some hack and slash. Anyway, just came by to say awesome game and saw the idea of platformer and got all excited. Thanks for a great game that actually runs (no pun) on my phone. (unlike another endless runner I recently bought)
The game did raise some attention and a lot of nice reviews, but it probably did hurt the game to launch in december when there's so much going on. We got unlucky with a few things, which might explain why the game under-performed. Or perhaps people are just reluctant to get an endless runner now, even if its one of the best. However, we still believe strongly in the game and we've got sooo many positive reactions that we think that the game might deserve a sequel.
Not yet since we took a small break through the holidays, but this is still on the high priority list. Once we're done with the controls additions, we'll check if it is doable to include it in the same update.
First off, if you're a fan of very difficult endless runners - DRWAPS will not dissapoint, this game definitely brings the hardcore gamer out of you. I bought the game immediately after it was released and was not dissapointed, the amount of upgrades in here is absolutely insane, totaling ten different skills to unlock, five times each for most of them. The fact that you can also buy different colors for your 'plasma sword,' hair, and clothing is a very welcoming experience. The small storyline is done with comic book graphics and done very well to bring even more of an enganging game time. DRAWPS starts you off with levels in which you have to run a certain distance in order to complete the level. There are a total of four worlds/environments, each being proggressively more difficult. There are also four endless modes included in the game, going from Easy to Expert. As you run, aleins come at you, obviously trying to kill you. There are a few different types of enemies, ones that shoot lasers that can be deflected, ones with long arms that you must slide under, etc. Thankfully, as the name implies, you somehow obtained a plasma sword which can be used to kill the aliens. Each alien killed gives you some amount of experience points which can be used to upgrade skills or asthethics . These skills include: longer sliding, the ability to dive, a dash attack, and more. During a game you will encounter powerups which will either give you a shield, long range wave attack, or simply give you another life. More experience points can be collected by collecting stars floating around the level, or completing various challenges in the endless levels. The challenges encourage you to obtain a certain amount stars or powerups, or to kill a number of enemies in a single playthrough. One can also obtain more experience by buying them through in-app purchases, but don't worry, the presence is un-noticeable and definitely not needed. As I've said many times, I love stat pages. DRAWPS has a stats page which includes time played, how many games you've played, how many enemies you've killed, and more. Leaderboards and Achievements are done through both OpenFeint and GameCenter. There are many leaderboards which show the leaders in each world in story mode and endless levels. The game has a total of 36 achievements and most of them are rewarded for traveling a given distance in a specific game mode and level. Overall, the game is absolutely worth the asking price if you consider yourself a hardcore gamer or love endless runners. One gripe I had with DRAWPS, is the lack of level variety. After playing for about four hours I had most of the levels almost memorized and recognizable when I got to a level formation, as you can imagine, this makes endless mode feel very samey after a while and quite boring. My Rating - 4 Stars
Thanks for your review! Although we've put a lot of effort on gameplay variety to set us apart from more traditional runners (hundreds of level configurations loaded randomly in endless mode), a sharp eye will start recognizing the configurations after a while. Although there's already a lot of content, what do you think would be the best to increase replayability? 1- Adding more level configurations, so that the same ones are loaded less often 2- Adding more enemies or obstacles 3- Revamp the endless objectives by adding more types of objectives and the possibility to complete more than 1 in the same run. 4- Adding new game modes
Here's a couple of announcements: First of all, the game was covered yesterday on The Totally Rad Show, which is pretty cool Secondly, the new update is now available. It features new upgrades and also a new system to customize the controls buttons, something which should be appreciated on iPad. However, we had to split our work on alternative controls devices. The game should be now playable on joypad, but the menus are not fully supported yet. We wanted to include iCade support in this update, but we had to push it to the next one. Fortunately, it should come quickly . Cheers!
Oh about #3, I should add that in the update, we've included a part of that plan. It is now possible to complete up to 3 objectives at the same time. The idea is to not slow down a player if he is performing much better than the current objectives.
