Did you notice they even used Geometry Dash's images and app description? How Apple lets this stuff by is beyond me.
Well, I've brought the Don't Starve issue to Klei's attention on Twitter and they've acknowledged my tweet so maybe we'll see something happen on that end.
Seriously? It's clearly inspired by but far from theft of assets or anything like that so I think that's a little overkill. Aside from the menu page there's only a similar art style (a style that was around long before Don't Starve) and not even close to the same environments, gameplay or anything. With all of the other games that go way further in coping art, gameplay, etc., it's incredibly annoying how much people actually care about this game when far worse offenses are going on. I hope Klei is flattered rather than going after this incredibly talented dev.
What exactly do you expected to happen "on that end"? I've likewise sent an email to Tim Burton, Disney and Warner Brothers to let them know a game called Don't Starve uses images that closely resemble the Nightmare Before Christmas and the Corpse Bride. Got my fingers crossed. What is wrong with people?
To be fair, I think the game is beautifully inspired by DS's art, but I did notice this on the very first play:
There's a difference between using art that is inspired by a particular style and blatantly ripping off artwork from another game to the extent that the artist is only slightly modifying the assets to claim "inspiration". The app icon itself copies the standard "Wilson holding up a torch" scene that was synonymous with Don't Starve for the longest time. In any case, it's entirely possible nothing will happen because the App Store is full of clones and apps that steal assets from other games without being pulled.
Absolutely nothing. He's done literally the only "correct" thing in this situation - alert the original asset owners of potential copyright concerns and left it for them to sort out. With that in mind, could we please try to stay on a more productive avenue of discussion?
You're absolutely right. There's another thread for this art similarity discussion. I should know better. #
With all the talk of this resembling Don't Starve,I noticed DS is on sale. So, you've convinced me to pick that up. I'm not a huge rouge like fan, but the art style really is great to look at!
You're right. Wow, things most have really gotten out of hand for them to close a thread. Or maybe they decided to just let it happen here?
I can see that. Unfortunately I think it's drawn that stuff back into this thread. I'm going to stop talking about it or responding to it as I think everything that could be said has been said. Enough has been said to help people come to their own conclusions and either buy the game or pass on it. Thanks Eli for keeping it real.
Agree that "revive with crystal" should be removed and I wish this had landscape mode. Just wanted to say I love how you react for similarities/copy-paste between this and Don't Starve but give a pass for pretty much same situation between Space Grunts and Nuclear Throne. Don't get me wrong I don't give a thing about any of this nonsense. I think they are all good.
Those two games came out so close together (5 weeks apart) that I don't think either one could have borrowed from the other.
I don't think that comparing Space Grunts and Nuclear Throne's visuals is necessarily fair. While I think it'd be fair to say that Space Grunts is inspired by Nuclear Throne (NT was in early access back in 2013), I mean, NT didn't invent post-apocalyptic style at all. And SG totally has the Orangepixel house art and feel to it, too. It's just one guy doing the game (minus the sound/music) and it feels more like "post-apocalypse by way of Pascal Bestebroer" than "let's rip off NT."
