It plays impeccably on the iPhone 5. I was playing while downloading an app over wifi and had no slowdown whatsoever. Crazy.

How do you unlock the ships? I've unlocked the heli by (I think) finishing easy mode. And the other one?

Thank you but while this points us in the right direction, it doesn't really help most people who open up a plist file for the first time, primarily because there is no "digital compass", "compass" or "digital" string or key in my DDP Max info.plist file. There is a magnetometer listed in the requirements but that by itself doesn't tell us how to edit the entry and where. I've been trying for over an hour it just doesn't work - it would've been much easier if you had posted the actual string to modifiy or delete.

Sorry if I sound bitter but I was very much looking forward to this, the App store description still clearly states "IPod touch 5th generation" as compatible, and I'm quite disappointed at Cave right now.

Well on the others outside of practice modes it'd restart you at the first stage cause the way scoring works in them.
iPhone 4 and iPad 3 here too, kind of feels like the game is made to run at 30fps (vs their others running at 60) but I'm hoping to be wrong there.

On a side note it sounds like you have wait control turned off in DDPR. With it on you can see it slow down a whole bunch...and makes it easier as a result (it's meant to slow down like that way anyway).
I think beating 5A and 5B unlock the ships.

Apple lists the 5th gen touch as compatible. Cave, in their description, does not.

Haha..don't sweat it. I'm not at home yet but I'll give it a try when I get home. I think we need to edit at least 2 items.. One to disable check for compass (I think it's the magnetic something or other). Another is to enable it for iPod touch. Just got to look for the right entries in the 2 plist files. I find doing these mini hacks pretty fun..sometimes more fun than playing the actual game.

Try bugging Cave on their Twitter or support email about the iPod touch thing if you haven't already.

  9. Good glad someone else has the same combo as I do. The iphone 4 plays the game much better than the new ipad framerate and control wise. Hopefully they can tweak the ipad version a little bit in the future.

On all Cave games, I always turn wait control off. I like playing my shmups on the hardest difficulty possible with no wait control, I like shmups totally crazy.

But sometimes I like it a little slower paced when I am tired or relaxing. Sometimes in DDPR, I just feel like all I am looking at is the bullets, in DDPM, it is nice to be able to see the monsters or backgrounds, and enjoy the ride a little more.

    SHIP UNLOCKS:

Beat 5a with any ship for the Tiger/lock-on ship

Beat 5a with the Tiger for the Orchid/bomb ship.

None of the 3 requirements is necessary; just finish the level.

I'm liking this more & more. BP2 was my introduction to Cave; Black Label will always be my favorite. I spent time with the rest of the catalog, learning the scoring systems, etc. I think a large amount of people will always stick to the first Cave game they played as their favorite, it just seems how it works with their stuff.

I'm fairly certain that this will replace Espgaluda 2 as my runner-up for permanent place on my phone.

Edit: one more thing. I see no use for the Type-A after unlocking the Tigerschwert. I don't want to abandon it completely this early on, but it's the Mario in Mario Kart. Maybe some folks can make it work, but I enjoy the more specialized ships.

How does this compare to Phoenix HD? I'd be interested in your thoughts!

It's a good comparison. The way the difficulty progression works is very similar in concept to the star system in Phoenix, just on a level-by-level basis. As much as I enjoy Phoenix every once in a while for a quick fix, it just doesn't match the depth of the game if you're interested in high scores instead of survival.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is well worth the sale price even if you're not interested in scoring, I haven't even developed enough to focus on high scores yet. I'm well above-average but not amazing at these games, and I'm still having difficulty passing many of the C and D levels.

Similar controls (relative touch movement with second finger tap for powerup), and similar colorful presentation. The dynamic difficulty also seems practically borrowed from Phoenix HD (pre-last update). The bullet patterns are very Cave though, and the gameplay is inherently different in that it is level based and not infinite like Phoenix. This game is also different in that it is a premium title. You can play for a high score any time you like. Phoenix HD went truly freemium with their last update with consumable currency, one time use powerups and that whole deal, so you have to grind games to save up for each high score run you want to make (or pay them more money every time you want to go for a high score).

  15. Yeah, I agree. The main thing that I find similar between the games is the use of wild colors, lots of ship types, and the difficulty that modifies itself.

Gameplay wise they are totally different. Maximum for the most part plays like a cave game but the bullets are bigger and a little slower than normal.

The pace of cave games is usually fast with high octane pumping music, where phoenix music is more serene and grand.

Both games have a diverse selection of ships, I personally would love to have the Trinity teleporting ship in this game. Both games are fun, but gameplay wise I don't find them too similar due to the differences in bullet patterns and pace of game.

Very similar to Danmaku Unlimited. A bit disappointed. Not full screen, ship is too large. I don't like this small field of view on shmups.

This game is wonderful, just like all other Cave releases. There is actually a restart option in the pause menu, which we have all been asking from Cave for ages. Also the load times are really short as well. DDP-R is my favorite game, but sometimes the load times are just too long. On the other hand, the color palette of this game makes my eyes bleed and shows the genius of Cave arcade releases which have a relatively soft and easy palettes.

Thanks Lazlo, Royce and Connector for your posts. Very useful :)
I bought it earlier and really like it. Definitely different enough from Phoenix to be playing both. I also bought Space Tripper which is good fun in a different way but I didn't pick it up when it was first released. I also tried Gridrunner by Minter which is awesome gameplay but the low-fi graphics hurt my eyes :p

I seem to be on a bit of a schmup phase in my iOS gaming career so thanks for persuading me to get this too ;)

EDIT: are there any other games I'm missing out on? I got Mutant Storm which is fantastic for twin stick, and I tried that JAM that came out recently which I find a bit pedestrian. I got Blazing Star which is cool for oldskool... also tried demos of Ultrablast SE, Endless War and some of the other Cave offerings. Anything more modern/retina styleee I've missed?

My favorite shmups: all are good, also get Dariusburst and Bug Princess 2, Icarus x is good for a quick game too.
