@Curtisrshideler and others: EW was sold seperately and for a cheaper price (than EU) on consoles. This is the same case here. This here IS already a discounted price compared to the original.Basically you just buy an add on.Please tell me when in the history of gaming you get a discounted price for an add on just because you bought the original game? And it plays so different that it's more than worh the asking price. There's a ton of new stuff (a whole new enemy i.e.) in here. Please stop moaning. I need some more reports about map variety before i buy it though.I played EU to death on iOS and i'm currently in the last mission of EW on X360.Not sure if i need it on iOS right NOW but will buy it for sure. Are there some graphical improvements?Shadows?C'mon Firaxis give my 8 core GPU some food
Exactly. The entitlement factor when it comes to mobile is reaching full blown toxicity for game development. The original XCom for iOS came out nearly 1.5 years ago and hasn't had an update in 7 months. It is abundantly clear from 2K's perspective that it's run its course. Virtually all apps are released with one purpose: turning a profit, and the original after that long, optimised to run on devices *two* generations ago*, with current audience awareness a memory, is not a good target to make current for all manner of reasons (perhaps most notably the fact that had they updated the core engine to run X:EW these pages would instead be a bitch fest about how it would no longer run on people's older devices). They've re-jiggered the engine and figured out how to craft a working version of the biggest and most complete version of the modern XCom so you can sit on the toilet and snipe aliens without balancing a laptop on your thighs, and they've done all of this for about the price of a movie ticket in a metropolitan area. Where is this "shady" as someone described it? Would love for all of these people who lob these descriptors at publishers and developers to have similar expectations on them with whatever their jobs. Imagine calling your roofer and asking them to come out and upgrade your roof at a discounted price, after all, you paid them full price just 3 years ago. They owe you a cheaper, fresher set of roof tiles, right?
It seems I can still find it via purchased apps on my iDevices, but it doesn't show up under purchased apps in iTunes - probably just a glitch. But definitely gone from the regular app store, so you can only buy the new one.
I dont think it's entitled to expect a developer to not abandon a premium title by releasing an enhanced edition within 2 years that makes the original obselete especially on a digital distribution format where updating/IAP seems reasonable. Profit is profit but repackaging and rebranding the same material again and again is part of what's wrong with gaming - gold edition this, platinum that.
I dunno about them pulling XCOM EU but i just checked my previous purchases tab and it was still there
I love this: now I'm "entitled" because I feel like a company should provide support to their patrons. I never once said that they should give old customers EW for free, or that new customers should have to pay extra for the EU content: I only said that it's odd that they'd drop an expensive app (because you can name a million everyday expenses where people might pour more than ten times the money they might have spent on EU. That doesn't change the fact that, on the iOS scene, in this day and age, $19.99 is a significant amount of money: I could have spent that same amount and bought 20 $0.99 games, 20 $0.99 comics on ComiXology, a couple albums or rented a couple movies, what have you, some of which might have just as much if not more in the way of replayability factor than XCOM does) which some people have been experiencing technical issues with in favor of a nifty repackaging with additional content. And the thing is, today, the EU app is working perfectly on my device. However, when iOS 8.5, or 9 or 10 drops, something may go wrong and EU might run with no sound or with graphical issues, if it runs at all! If that does happen, I'll know for a fact that those issues won't be addressed because the app is no longer available. Now, I can accept a free game getting no technical support too long after its release (it's fair enough, I paid nothing for it, I usually don't buy IAPs. It's a date that went well enough but where none of the involved really connected, no feelings were hurt and they leave as friends); however, the moment I put money into something, then I don't think it's too out of the ordinary to expect the company that got my money to honor their commitment to give me what I paid for. Because that one area where iOS gaming differs from console gaming, and why spending $20 on an iOS game is more of a gamble than spending $20 on a PSN/XBLA game: digital console games are seldom broken by console software updates and a PSP game will run as well on a PSP as it will on a Vita; that can't be taken for granted with iOS games, as any given game can be significantly broken by changing devices or upgrading a device's software. I'm not too fond of being rounded into the "herd" of cheapskate iOS gamers - like I said, my device is filled to the brim with games that people might classify as "too expensive", such as the three console GTA ports, KOTOR, MHFU, XCOM, Banner Saga, and BioShock will be among them too as soon as I get a better device - because if the product is good, then I'll have no problem spending as much as the company asks for. However, when a company as big as 2K is wants to make a point of pricing their games adequately, then forgive me for expecting them to treat their customer base and the money they spent on their product with respect. EDIT: I don't think I'll be commenting further on this issue. I've made my point, and I don't want to derail this thread with my complaints, especially seeing how this game is shaping up to be just as good if not better than EU was, and its fans deserve to go through this game's thread and read posts discussing the actual game ! EDIT 2: I've had a chance to rethink my stance on this and, even though I don't feel as strongly about this as I did earlier today, I think I finally figured out why the removal of Enemy Unknown from the App Store bugs me as much as it does: when this port was first announced, 2K made a big deal of the fact that this'd be a full-blown port of a (then) current-gen game and that it'd be priced accordingly. Back then, I hadn't even heard of XCOM nor knew what it was about. However, seeing 2K essentially say "we think iOS is a viable gaming platform, so we're going to showcase exactly that and we'll not only show the world that is it possible to run a great modern game on your phone, we'll show them that people are willing to pay for quality," made me decide that, if I wanted iOS gaming to grow and gain more notoriety in the gaming world, this was a statement I could get behind and that I should support with my wallet. And so I did and, not really to my surprise, the game blew me away! That, combined with my personal all-time favorite KOTOR which came out around the same time, really shifted public perception of what iOS gaming could be, and I couldn't be prouder to help contribute to both Aspyr and 2K's success! And that's why this stings, because even though, as was mentioned, it's somewhat standard practice for devs to eventually stop supporting their games (come on, I'm not naive: I know that it's unreasonable for me to expect a game to be continuously upgraded ad infinitum), it felt like 2K's initial grand statement has been somewhat betrayed, that I put my money where my mouth was and that what I considered a "game" was little more than an "app" for 2K. Because the thing is, money oftentimes is too loosely spent on the App Store, so much so that we often lose sight of its real value when compared on what it was spent on (and if an app that cost $1, $2 or even $4 is often no longer supported, we might simply shrug our shoulders and move on to the next thing). However, in this case, with my $20, I purchased more than XCOM Enemy Unknown: I purchased the notion that I was buying a "game", not an "app", and I was expecting it to be treated that way. And for all the talk of people wanting iOS to be a legitimate gaming platform, I can almost guarantee that a move like this wouldn't be all that well accepted even if it happened on PSN, XBLA or Stream. Notice the backlash that Ubisoft has faced from removing their catalog from Stream earlier this week, so much so that they actually reversed that decision. It's actually ok to complain about something (especially when it's something you put money into) when there's a good reason for it, no matter what platform we're talking about! People complained about EA shutting down the servers for the iOS version of Madden 14 (a F2P game for which people bought IAPs which were completely lost in the wake of the server shutdown) when Madden 15 came out; why is one scenario valid and the other isn't? At the end of the day, it is what it is, and people who purchased EU aren't even that badly off. I still have EU installed, I can reinstall it if it's ever necessary, and I know that, for a good while, I can expect it to run as well as it has thus far. So, you know, it's not all bad
I haven't purchased this or the original. I'm just playing devil's advocate here. If you make customers pay $20 for the original and then allow new customers to get a new app with the same content plus extras for less... BUT you make owners of the original pay the same price, then we're talking one person paying $30 while another pays less than $10. I just think that's bad customer service and business. IF I ever purchase this game, I'm sure I'd find it completely worth $50+. So, I just wish developers would respect customers by charging one price ($20) for the original and release this as an IAP within that app. Or how about a full update to the app, unlocked by an IAP. Shoot, charge $10-20 for that IAP for all I care. I'm just saying that it's disrespectful to customers who've already purchased this to make them pay the same amount for an update as a new customer pays for the entire full experience from the outset.
Completely agree! Personally, even 20$ (or 10$) discount + 13$ = 33$$ is a fair price to enjoy all this game has to offer, and i wouldn't mind paying for it again, since personally, what i get is fully worth 33$. However, it is unfair to existing customers as a matter of policy, especially when we have read that "XCOM EW is not possible to come for the EU ios due to appstore storage or whatnot", so we buy the game thinking we get XCOM as good as it gets, to spend full price again for content that we already have if we want the extras. Again, it's not about the price. It's about being charged twice, NO MATTER WHAT THE PRICE, be it 1$ or 20$, if we want to enjoy some extra features that we were sure "would not fit". I've learned this lesson in consoles, first for Square (Final Mix, International, etc) and Capcom (Super SFIv, Ultra SFIV etc) and other companies. At least you *expect they will do it, and you don't buy the game at first release if you want full features. Here, this was completely unexpected.
Guys, what about Tomb Raider definitive editon? The Last of Us Definitive Edition? Or Monster Hunter Freedom Unite? Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate/4 Ultimate? Or Pokémon Omega Ruby etc etc IMHO, I think this one's getting blown up too much
You have indeed made yourself a poster child for entitlement - there is no promised nor implied support for these games past the iOS version and current hardware available when they launch, period. If you buy anything on the app store and think you are entitled to have it to run the next time Apple updates their hardware/software then you are naive given that this is a risk that predates iOS by decades. It's always been the standard practice in software. You can't *expect* developers, even ones as big as 2K, to risk (or, in this case, deliberately) hurting their bottom line so your purchase is future proofed against changes you *knew* were coming. You can hope it will be supported, you can want it to be supported, but *expecting* it to be supported? Ha! You aren't a patron any more than I am president. Spent $20 on XCom:EU 1.5 years ago. Got $20 worth of good out of it 1.48 years ago. Everything after that was gravy. Now for $13 I can get a new version of the game and I'm not out anything at all. When a game stops working with a new device/iOS (assuming it's even still on a device and in my mental radar, something very few games manage anyhow given the rapidity of game releases), I follow the forum chatter on that game a little longer to see if the developers plans to fix it, and, if not, delete and move on. My life has enough stresses without volunteering to invent new ones. I'm not even sure why some of you play mobile games. It's cheaper, more plentiful, and varied than just about any other platform. I can't even keep up with the amount of new games that come out I might enjoy. I have to budget what free *time* I do have among whatever the cream of the crop is at the moment and leave many, many games unfinished or even barely touched. As soon as this finishes downloading, I'll be off playing it and you all can get back to yelling into the ether about how wronged you feel that 2K did what they already did on consoles a year ago telegraphing their most likely actions
I paid for XCOM : Enemy Unknown as soon as it got out 20 $ and never regretted it ( played both Singleplayer and multiplayer for a long time ). Now they removed original game and basically forcing me to pay 13 $ to experience only DLC stuff, that btw even isn't so big. I was never agains paying for DLC , but to make whole new app / game just to experience DLC is disgusting move for such a big company. I will probably buy it though because it is the best strategy for iOS, but I hope you loose money on this.
@C.Hannum Even though the tone of your last post is rather disrespectful and unnecessary, I won't answer in kind. I'll just say that I agree with a couple of your points, I disagree with many of them and leave it at that. @Kirs This is a new app entirely different from EU. I haven't heard anything on the topic of cross-app iCloud game saves (so for all I know it could be entirely possible), but that's probably why what you're trying isn't working.
the original is not pulled. on my french appstore, this morning it was, and then it came back. chill. that said, it could have been a DLC like on PC...
I bought eu on ios and gladly bought ew without second thought just as ps3 owners did yet the amount of complaints and sense of entitlement of ios gamers boogles me. You guys are getting an awesome game that is the envy of ps vita owners for a price of a good coffee and a value meal and this is why we cant have nice things!
1.) iOS isn't dedicate playing console and prices are adjusted accordingly 2.) you are more entitled here as a console player and think that everyone should pay higher prices for years old DLC
+1. And to so many people complaining that this isnt a DLC in the original game on the app store - they must have developed this one different and likely more optimized/better for current devices. If you read the app store description, this no longer works on the same set of devices. I played the original on my 4s with lag and crashes. It was worth it to me, but since so many complained, I'm sure they had to rebuild and cap the devices used. So the construction is different. To forge ahead, you often have to make sacrifices. Sucks I cant play this on my current 4s, but seriously should I expect it to? Stop comparing this game to the past one because its considered an 'expansion'. Its in the app store as a seperate app for a reason. And most importantly, dont start complaining or giving the game bad feedback for some silly reasons. I personally want them to keep making awesome games like this.
