Great update! Thanks! This should cement Disc Drivin as a big success with a huge user base! Notifications seem to be unreliable, but I think that may just be an illusion that would be solved by adding number badges. Im always launching the app and seeing I owe turns that I had no idea about. Two possible scenarios that I think might be causing this! 1. Some new turns come in while the app is open (while Im playing a turn); so no notification pops up. Then I exit the app without checking the list. Then I have no idea there are additional turns waiting for me. A badge would fix thisand the badge should be be added whether the turn arrives while the app is open or not. 2. Or, if I havent used my phone in a while I may have a big stack of notifications waiting for me: calendar alarms and voicemails and whatnot. I dismiss them, and either dont notice Disc Drivin in the chaos, or notice it but cant play right now. Later when I have a chance to play, theres no badge to remind me its my turn. Whereas Words With Friends etc. always show a count of turns I owe.
Yeah I like your 2nd choice. I always know if I have turns in WWF because the number shows up. I think this needs the same thing. The only time the number pops up is when you've been in the app when it's your turn and you choose not to take the turn yet and exit out of it
Adams Immersive, I think you're right about the cases in which you can miss a notification. We do want to start pushing badge numbers, we just haven't gotten to it yet. It is getting closer to the top of the list though.
The notifications are slow, but I think the bigger problem is that when you are trying to play a match live, it isn't live at all. Having to go back out of the game, then wait for it to update, then go back in... that's pretty painful IMHO. Plus there's many times that it seems that it is my turn, but the game is not showing that it's my turn - I tap one that's listed as their turn, and low and behold, it's actually my turn. I've yet to ever see someone take a turn live. I don't know if that's because it isn't actually working (I mean, staying in a game and waiting to see their turn happen) or if it's just so slow to update that I always give up before that ever happens. Either way I'd really like to see the response time for a live game greatly improved before I put out for the paid version.
Hey crunc, we may adjust the polling times to make it more frequent, but this isn't a traditional real-time, synchronous multiplayer game. As a turn-based asynchronous game like Words with Friends, Disc Drivin' doesn't maintain a constant server connection. It has to poll the server for updates. Polling continuously isn't practical performance-wise. If you're in the game or in the main menu, we poll about once a minute. In some cases it is faster. For a completely live, synchronous game, you'll need to play in a Pass-and-play game or a local multiplayer game. Like I said before, we may look at more frequent polling for online games, but they will remain asynchronous and polled. Thanks for the feedback, we're always listening!
Hmm, but all those other games seem to provide much quicker turnaround. For example Carcassonne. By "live" I don't literally mean instantaneous, just the ability to play a game with people who are online at the same time, and have it go pretty quickly, thus feeling "live". So, increasing the polling frequency sounds good, or otherwise doing whatever it is that games like Carcassonne do.
When we gonna get some league action going? Someone created a league and I joined the site but now can't remember the address because it never really took off, any news?
Thanks crunc, I understand what you're expecting now and yeah I think it's just a matter of adjusting the polling. We'll see what we can do. Thanks again for the feedback.
Yep, that's the only thing you have to do Ah no finally, is it possible to have the ability to remove "Online" games when the 20 limiit is reached ?
Well, I think you can resign from a game. There's a resign button, but I've never pressed it. Of course, if somebody isn't taking their turn, "resigning" seems like you're getting hosed, so I'd rather you could just delete such games.
Indy it was me who tried to start a league... But it's been shut down for now cause for some reason non- developers aren't allowed to hold "contests" on TA... Even though a league isn't really a contest... So I shut it down for now due to lack of advertisement ability..... Now if pixelocity started said league.... Maybe things would be different
Well... I have a page setup.... And would be down to run said league... That is if I can get pixel to do all the advertisement, since last time tried I got penalty points from TA
Some sort of tournament or league would be awesome! And I agree with what someone posted a page back. I wish there were a way to delete a race if it's over 4 days old or something. I have 23 races at once right now and I can't start another race nor have I been able to try the new random oponent feature. And I'll say it again, one of the features I'd love to see in a future update is a win/loss tracker. I know you can see the last 10 or so races you've played but then they start dropping off and I can't tell my record. It would be neat to be able to see your opponents record as well. Thanks Pixelocity for such a great game, keep up the great work!
Players will auto-resign if they haven't played a turn in a while. Auto-resign happens after 5 days for a random opponent, and 8 days for a custom opponent. So if you have any games that haven't had a turn played after those times, try clicking on them.
A league or tournament would be fun, but we just don't have the time for it right now. We're spending all of our time on additions and improvements to Disc Drivin', but we'll think about it for the future.
Pull-down refresh would be great, quite often I know certain friends are online and we are constantly jumping out of the app and back in just to force a quicker refresh.
I played a few games with a guy in Norway (I'm in the US), and chatted quite a bit. I love the internet and games like this. But what was that guy doing up at 4:30 in the morning???
