I purchased an iPod Touch 2nd gen late 2008. Since then, I've amassed over 500 games. Then the 3rd gen and 3GS come out featuring better specs which can handle better games, understandably. Then the iPad comes out and owners have to repurchase HD versions of the games they may have already paid for on their older device because the 2x mode looks terrible. A few months pass and there's still a relatively small amount of blockbuster games on the iPad and the amount of universal games has increased only slightly. Now iPhone 4 gets released... Day 1 there are tons of free updates that increase the resolution of existing games to support the new screens. Where was this when the iPad was released? Granted, the HD games that we buy for the iPad do usually give you more to view than the iPhone counterpart, but I still would've liked to see the same support for nonHD games so we don't have to suffer with the 2x mode. What's worse is that those newly optimized games still look exactly the same on the iPad. From my understanding, the iPad displays old and new versions of the iphone games the same because the older OS reverts it back. When OS 4 gets released for the iPad, will we see those newly optimized games look better for us?
My sentiments exactly. Let's hope the release of OS4 for the iPad allows us to play hi-res iPhone 4 titles too, not just the upscaled crap.
well a few month is actualy 2 month, and that in the us. In europe the release was a month ago. Not sure what you expect in thoose 2 month but around 2000+ ipad only apps is a good number imho. well if you would take a close look what games actualy offer hd gaming you see that most of thoose are also avaiable in native ipad versions. know if you have a hd ipad version its actualy alot easier to make an iphon4 hd version out of it based on the low res iphone 3gs version using the already made highres gfx from the ipad. so its more than natural that there will be more hd apps ready at day 1 because of the ipad. if there would be no ipad there would be no quick hd ressources to build youre high res iphone version from. well usualy an ipad game should be completly redesigned.. you have an 10" screen to place gi elemtnets etc. on thats a totaly different approach. on the iphone4 all you will get is higher resolution. the gui elements and restrictions will be the same, the screen is the same size so the button and gameplay elements will have the same size , just in higher resolution. its not trivial to create an ipad version, its alot easier just to bump up the res in the iphone4.. cause thats all you need todo. well one could guess that an upcoming update to os4.0 for the ipad will add high res iphone game support. at the end of the day one should keep in mind that the ipad is not the new revolutionary gameing platform. it has alot more appeal in the ebooks, media comsumption and webbrowsing capabilities than a still small iphone screen. thus the ipad market is alot more divided along thoose kinds of media avaiable on the ipad than the iphone ever will, alone due to the screen size difference.
I can understand why there have been so many iPhone 4 updates/games announced or released. It's a familiar device where the screen size is the same as the previous 3. The iPad on the other hand is a relatively unfamiliar device, developers aren't used to the screen size, the controls/layout and they don't know how successful their apps will be. I agree that it is a shame, even though I don't own an iPad. There is tons of potential for the iPad, and it would be nice to see what developers could do with it.
from a developement standpoint the biggest issue with the ipad is the low amount of ram. its has 256 the same amount the 3gs has but has more pixel space than the iphone4 with its 512mb. thats a huge disadvantage and i don't know why apple saved a few dollars on the ipad there. if ios4 has the same features on the ipad as on the iphone4 you will see quickly that the ram will be the biggest bottleneck there. the 3gs is save with its low res screen and its 256mb ram thats more than enough.. the ipad on other hands is currently already outdated by the iphone4 next years ipad revision will surely have a big bump in that department at the end of the day, if you look at the hardware specs and the screen size and resolution.. the ipad is the weakest of the trio. well see how it turns out and where the way of the ipad will go
Also iPad won't even install some games anymore cuz it's doesn't have iOS 4....basically we iPad owners are screwed. Oh we are so so screwed. Gonna go get the jelly to lessen the pain. Here's screenshots to prove it.
According to Hodapp, system memory has no relevance to user satisfaction since everything in the app store works. I for one am not surprised that Apple bumped that spec in the iPhone 4. While there won't be a next year's iPhone for people signing new 2 year contracts, apple can alwAys try to sell current ipad owners another one.
I can guarantee you that within a year there will be more iPhone 4s than iPads. iPads are pretty expensive in comparison, and much less popular.
well system memory has no relevance for low res iphone games on the ipad. but it for ipad versions of games it has a huge negative relevance cause you need to fit alot bigger gfx into the same amount of ram.. how do you do this effectivly? you cut corners here and there etc. especialy for 2d games this is a big problem. wait till the iphone4 games arrive that uses the bigger amount of ram avaiable and you will see constant crashes due to low memory on the ipad. it was a bad idea to give the hardware with the biggest screen lousy 256mb ram. as for the ram of the iphone4, i feared that they would put just 256mb ram into the phone after the release of the ipad.. and was lucky to find out they doubled it.. since that is necessary with all the stuff going on on the screen and behind it (multitasking etc.) at the end of the day early adopters are always somehow screwed.. next years iteration of the ipad will be the solid version many games and app will found on. by that time there will also be enough ipad exclusive apps which will shine on the new version..
Any multitouch game can potentially be more complex on an iPad due to the greater ratio of multitouch instance density to average nerve ending density (assuming that fingers or thumbs are the input devices in most gaming experiences). Also, it won't be as likely to overheat and you won't wax myopic on no time flat, unlike the case with iPhone 4; all that extra apparent detail affects expectation, which in turn increases tendency to close inspect.
256mb is fine if developers code well. The only reason iPhone 4 has 512mb is to record 720p 30fps video.
