Hey all, Looks like a fun game, thinking about picking it up. Curious if anyone knows whether it supports MFi controllers. Seems like it would be perfect with hard controls
I've uploaded videos for 3 bosses. I'll hopefully have the last 2 up by tomorrow. Extremely harsh review from PocketGamer, 5 out of 10! http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/Devious+Dungeon/review.asp?c=57914
Only played a little so far played through twice only got up to level 8 I think if was. I'm enjoying the game so far the only thing I would say is i'd like some active skills. Anyway I like the graphics and gameplay and enjoying it especially just for 69p. That review is very harsh indeed but to me it sounded like the person had more of a vendetta than giving an honest personal opinion.
Was just about to post about the review .... Seems to be a trend on pocket gamer . Maybe they ate some sour grapes ? They are very positive or very negative it 's a hit or it is shit .. Used to value their reviews but lately , for me personally , they are a bit off track
Yeah i find their reviews interesting but often they seem so negative. Not just saying it but i do prefer the reviews on TA
Hey, thanks! You reminded me to buy grapes later. I planned that but forgot. Regarding PocketGamer: they are really harsh in the last 2-3 weeks. A lot of games got negative reviews, some of these games didn't deserve them. Looks like a trend.
Well, it's still just opinion. But hey... if you want to compare the simplistic battling/platforming/upgrading mechanics, take a look at Nimble Quest, Spell Sword, Knightmare Tower, Heroes of Loot, Savant Ascent, Super Crate Box, etc. If you look at the general gist of these games, Devious Dungeon is not much different.
Do the weapons even matter? I'm up to 11 base strength, 18 dmg weapon and was taking 3 hits to kill an enemy at 29 dmg per swing. To test it out I went back and equipped the lowest weapon at 10 dmg and was hitting 21 dmg per swing and it still took 3 hits, wtf?! 29 dmg x 3 = 87 29 dmg x 2 = 58 21 dmg x 3 = 63 So apparently beginning mob hp is somewhere between 60 and 80, but the way leveling works, it's going to take like 20+ levels to start killing them in 1-2 hits and by that time they won't be in the game due to level progression lol how does that even make sense. The game is somewhat fun, but not when I've leveled 10 times already, upgraded weapons about 5/6 times and see a tiny tiny margin increase in anything.
Game Impressions Haha I was just reading that. Yes, the game really is simple and I initially hesitated on buying it because of how some other games from the developer's library play. I was playing Random Runners just two nights ago and thought it was terrible, mostly hating on the controls and overall platforming experience. Tried Random Heroes 2 as well but wasn't really blown away. I liked Gravity Duck enough to finish it but it was just okay in the end. LOE was tight but my experience with it is short. I have the positive comments from the TA community to blame as well as the attractiveness of a dollar for my purchase; a bit of hope tossed in. The platforming and exploration experience in Devious Dungeon is fair. Controls on an iPhone are great. Jumps don't feel awkward, running speed is good, and the random maps are well-designed. Searching for hidden rooms is a big personal plus. The layout randomization is a point of interest but the lack of environmental interaction makes it all feel the same despite levels being structurally different each time. The crates and candles don't cut it because they all take 3 hits to destroy. Surprisingly, what really hooked me is the action, however simple it may be. Each enemy has its own attack pattern and when they're placed together in strategic locations, it gets satisfying to overcome. The giant bosses have so far been decently entertaining to figure out too. I do wish there was a 3rd button for something like a block, dodge, or special attack with a defense mechanic built in. The 3-stat system was actually a turn off even before dipping my toes in the game and it is still a disappointment for a customization addict like me (My Guild Wars 2 Thief had over 20 weapons and over a dozen armor sets with different set effects before I quit; that's not even mentioning my Mesmer). The equipment system was even more disappointing as it was just incremental stat upgrades. The leveling experience isn't that enjoyable either as the effect of 1 point is so minute. The good thing about the small stat changes though is it's easier to balance the game. I also appreciate the visual changes with every new piece of gear you get. I don't find the grind for better gear off-putting even without a coin doubler but I do wish level ups came faster so I could customize my character more. What's the maximum level anyway? I'm not even level 20 yet but I can already sense some imbalance with dexterity unless that was part of the design. In the end, though we did focus more on different parts of the game, I kind of feel PG gave an appropriate score. Suggestions: - Stat resets - Easier option to select a level without quitting/dying - Give objects random amounts of HP (1-3) instead of always requiring 3 hits - Leaderboard - Traps - Hats with effects? - Skills, active or passive. Passive sounds more feasible. Try a system like Battleheart's where you can choose between 2 skills per tier. - Rework the 1000 resurrections and 5000 levels achievements. I don't play sloppy enough to die that often. :/
PG was too harsh IMO. Is the game deep? No. But the random levels, rogue like progression, enemy variety, hidden rooms...all add to the mix. It's definitely better than a lot of the more recent Ravenous releases like the Random Heroes games. It didn't live up to my probably over zealous expectations from following it in the Upcoming section, but I'd still give it at least a 7/10. I'd love to see some special attacks to spice the combat up a bit, but I'm enjoying it overall.
Games absolutely amazing! I love the pixel visuals, controls are flawless it seems. The space apart is perfect! It allows for smooth guidance throughout dungeons. I wish they're was some more angle to combat. There's only swords & hammers it seems. Bows / swords / axes ect would be cool. Armor would be nice as well! They're is rings / chest peices I believe. Would be nice for leggings / boots / (some sort of block would help greatly). It's an awesome game though! Will buy the doubler to support.
Ravenous games always pull me in from trailers, but never get me to a point of appreciating my purchase. Their production style is similar to how I used to write term papers back in college - I had all the writing skills, and critical thinking to create 3/4ths of a paper brilliantly, then I'd get to the last page and just want it to be done taking what would have been an A+ down to a B. It's obvious their art style is their strength, at least with me, it attracts me every single time. However, beyond that they have a serious track record on gimping gameplay. In this game why aren't there multiple classes, why are the weapons so lazily laid out alternating sword, hammer, sword, hammer? Someone mentioned platforming roguelike, which I guess is close because of the randomized levels, but there isn't even an inventory screen to see what you have equipped (except for at the vendor), and no gear loot drops. I'm probably being overly critical, but I guess I wished some other studio would take Ravenous art and blend it with all the missing elements people here have listed. Main character weapon: Forward stabbing motion Enemy weapons: Axes with long arch swings, small thrown axes in an arch, bows, magic projectiles Someone hack this game so I can play as an enemy please!
I was initially worried about difficulty - this game is clearly not as punishing as other roguelike platformers - but then I died. A little concerned about level progression. Much like RH, I see myself getting optimum gear really early on and just kind of riding out the rest of the game. Still great, though. Despite all my complaints, I usually put all other games on hold and gorge on whatever the new Ravenous release is until it's beat to the street, and have a great time the whole time. That kind of hits the point of all games right on the head there, at least for me. This one is really good, make no mistake.
Solid game. I do wish it supported MFi controllers but virtual works pretty well. I agree, skills are needed, much more so than a "want". Let's hope there's some content update.
