Developers shouldn't bother with 3D games on the iPhone

Discussion in 'General Game Discussion and Questions' started by Twazzock, Jul 1, 2009.

  1. Now that you mention it, that's not a bad idea. While the reek of his innumerable Crapp Store properties will be strong, I can put up with for the thought of some tag team torture action.

Yes, I know, but if you want to point to a good example of that, just have him download the Chip8 emulator. :)

And right here is about where this argument is laid to rest. As my sig notes, this is one of my faves and has a permanent slot on my iPhone. It just wouldn't be the same using the flick-movement tile method.

Really, this whole argument is just silly.

  2. But if video game programmers this kind of advice in the 1990s on the PC, we would never have the great console graphics that we do now. The PC had to go through over a decade of iPhone-like blockiness before arrive at what we have now. If iPhone developers stop 3D on the iPhone, how will we be able to made similar strides?

This is a message for Twazzok

    Dear Mr. Twazzock,
As a programmer and developer for Iphone games, I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the situation, and furthermore, I suggest you only buy 2D games from now on for your Iphone/Ipod. In fact, You should not even look in the direction of these horrid 3D games as they may make you feel less than fulfilled.
Please ignore the stupid masses as they enjoy their 3D game on the Iphone, as paying too much attention to them may cause you an undo amount of grief, and may even lead you to post messages of your profound knowledge, only to be wasted on the ears of the unlearned.

I don't really care either way. So long as the game doesn't lag, which is increasingly happening to me on my 1G Touch the more advanced games get. In a way, that's a good thing, as I don't feel tempted to buy every game under the sun. Lag kills any fun...

So, under the light of this thread, should we call Zen Bound a 3D game or not? :D

Considering its nicely thought shapes/great textures and virtual real-life-like 3D control scheme, IMHO it is one the best 3D games ever... And it is on a platform that some people do not even consider as a gaming device at all!

In my opinion, 3D on iPhone is going the right way, if not Zen Bound but Real Racing proves it more than anything else. It just depends on innovative developers to do it right.

I think 3D is good, but only for some kind of games. I really don't like the tendence to put everything to 3D when it is working much better in 2D. THere's a lot of games I am talking about. I can appreciate 2D game more than 3D. It is not about it, it is about gameplay itself!

I don't see how someone that actually owns an iDevice could even feel this way about 3-D games that are currently out.

Obviously Zen Bound is a great example, but more recent games that have A LOT more going on, like F.A.S.T and Real Racing look amazing, especially considering the fact that you're playing them on a f**king cell phone!!

And now with the 3GS (which already makes existing 2-D and especially 3-D games look better), future titles are going to look ridiculous. Take recently released Baseball Slugger for example. On my 3GS, it looks cleaner and more crisp than a PSP game.

I would say that i have to respect this guy's opinion, but in this case, i can't respect this kind of ignorance.

Go start your iPhone hate thread on a Palm Pre website or something man.

That's just wrong if you ask me. High or low polygon count means nothing! If it plays great and is fun what does it matter if you can see jagged lines. It's like not playing Disgaea 3 on the PS3 because they still use sprites

The rest of your post I can understand. The virtual d-pad/stick is only so good and playing in a 3D world can get cumbersome at times but this can only improve over time. Devs are still figuring out ways to make games for the iDevices and can only improve :)

But the PSP has a D-pad, an analog stick, 4 face buttons and 2 shoulder buttons. Power is nothing without control (as Nike say) and the control interface can kill a game dead. PSP offers choice and no screen covering, iDevice offers less in both.

No complaints here, I freakin' love my iPhone games; more just stating the obvious and what can we expect really from a device the size of a large cracker? Probably always be playing catchup to current gen computers/consoles, at least in our lifetimes, assuming we stay loyal to Apple.

To the people pointing out games like Zen Bound etc. sure they look great but that's not really what we're talking about; any dusty computer with even the lowliest 3D card can render a single object with great detail. We're talking about 1st and 3rd person action games in full 3D, something that can be done on the iPhone but you wouldn't really use the phrase 'wow nice graphics' to describe them.

I will say a step in the right direction is Sweetwater Defense which is a TD but displays some of the nicest 3D rendering I've seen so far in an action game.

And we see where all those buttons got the PSP!

That's not the question. Total non-sequitur. The question was if the iPhone should stay away from 3D, because it can't handle 3D well. The response was that it has more muscle than the PSP in that dept. (with the advent of the 3GS).

I have a PSP, and I had several games that are amazing, but I can't deny that it pretty much failed (commercially) when compared to the DS and the iPhone because it was a pain in the ass, what with load times and disk errors that froze it up, plus game-halting bugs that couldn't (or wouldn't) get patched.

Every so often I'll fire it up, because I love "SOCOM Tactical Strike" and "MG: Ac!d", but on the whole, the process of using it was totally inelegant.

It wasn't a contradiction. I was giving those games as an example of what I meant by 3D graphics. I wasn't saying the games I mentioned in my first paragraph were bad.

I mentioned it (and I didn't say PSP first :) )only because the iDevice offers extremely limited controls and when people generally talk about 3D games they don't want a plodding walk-along type of game. They want full-on max-action-all-guns-blazing-while-driving-really-fast-games. Now the iDevice may well be able to handle that but given the control interface it will be a generally poor user experience.

What I was getting at was that without good controls then all the power isn't going to cut it. And the iDevice has not enough controls for what people need.

That's the point. The very examples you are using to the define the category contradict your premise. If developers did not make 3D games for the iDevice, there would be no Real Racing or Assassin's Creed (or Glyder, or GI Joyride, or Doom Resurrection, or Resident Evil, or Need for Speed, or Let's Golf, or Tiger Woods, or Vector Ball, or Zen Bound, or Galaxy on Fire, or Real Tennis, or Supercross, or SlotZ, or Fastlane, or Pirate Wings, or Hero of Sparta, or ExZeus, or Galactic Gunner -- the list goes on and on). Do you believe that the iDevice would be a better platform if these games didn't exist?

    Right.

This is getting confusing, but YOU responded to THIS:

Which was MY response to the TC's assertion:

Which was HIS reasoning as to why 3D sucks on the iPhone, and the whole point of the topic.

    OK, stop: Hammer Time.

    How old are you?

I mean no offense, but you sound somewhat like a jaded 13 year old (no offense to 13 year olds, I know some with some real substance!!!)

When I was 13, I was playing Sega Master System when the ONLY other choice was Nintendeo Entertainment System.

I had the pleasure of watching games progress SLOWLY :)

I will play video games when I'm 70 years old, and I buy every system when they release...every single one.

If you want to see bad 3d graphics, look at PS1 or N64 (excluding Super Mario 64) - I tried playing Banjo Kazooie not too long ago and actually had a hard time seeing what was going on.

Sure, the PS3 games I would pick graphically, but it's funny how I find my ipod games more fun than playing 360 or PS3...in fact, my ipod has become my favorite system (next to my psp)

But to me, graphics are second to gameplay, content, and replay value.
However, I do find the following 3D games to look great:

    Flick Fishing (Sort of 3D)
    Real Tennis
    Midnight Bowling
    10 Pin Shuffle
    Real Racing
    Star Defense
    Snake Galaxy
    3D Homerun Slugger
    Zen Bound
    Motion X Poker Quest
    iSkydive
    Glyder

There are more I can't think of right now.

By the way, note to developers, I LOVE the games I named and many other people do:
Keep making them, we will keep buying them and playing them!
