This is not coming out for a while, and there's every chance that it will blow, but after reading the interview with the game director on Gamespot I can't help but be kind off-the-wall excited about it. Deux Ex, for those who have been deprived the pleasure, is probably the best action RPG ever released, and certainly in the top 10 of best games of all time. It played like an FPS, but had tremendous character customization depth, an actual morality system that defined real consequences to player actions, an engrossing story that pretty much pre-figured 9/11, memorable characters, and a choice-based ending that was actually profound. It was one of the first games that allowed you interact with the environment, as well as multiple approaches to missions (you could use stealth and non-lethal weapons, or just go in with weapons blazing); it created a semi-open world that was believable and immersive. It was also graphically ground-breaking, though fairly crude by today's standards. All in all, it's one of my all time favorite gaming experiences. From the interview, it seems that the developers have a good understanding of what made the original such a great game. I'm also happy that they've decided to go with a prequel (never played the Deux Ex sequel, but apparently it was pretty awful), mainly because the ending of the original game was so satisfying. The just-released trailer shows no gameplay, but definitely sets the stage for what could be one of the best games of the year. Wonder what other people think of all this?
I am looking forward to this game as a game, I am not looking forward to this as a DX universe game. To much liberties have been taken with the setting. If you want a true DX successor - play The Nameless Mod, http://www.thenamelessmod.com
I liked the first game quite a bit. Invisible War ... well, there was a lot of it I liked, but I didn't like where the plot went. This looks interesting, but I do agree, I hope it isn't just a generic shooter retooled to exist in the DX universe.
I thought the same thing when i saw the game announced, but that interview in GameSpot hit all the right notes from me -- starting by the fact that they refer to the game as an action RPG and not a shooter. We'll see if that holds on the final game, of course.
True enough. I've spent years being jaded by poor sequels, so I'm not going to put any stock in either way 'til we get some gameplay vids and more detail. It would be nice to have a proper modernized DX game, even if it's going the prequel route (I never trust that tack).
