Design feedback on an arcade game, please!

    I'm thinking of releasing version 2.0 of Battlefortress, but I want to tighten up the game play. HELP!

    It's fun once you get into the zone, but I've seen people take a few seconds to intuit the controls, kill a boss, then put it down and say "I get it." What can I do to get them over that hump? How can I make it more sticky?

    I'm thinking in terms of how to tune the controls and how to pace the boss difficulty curve. Before I go adding more guns or modes, I want to make sure the simple experience of the first few levels is as solid as it can be.
